Chapter 3: The Art of Surviving a World of War
Nobunaga ordered Katsuie and Nagahide to train her in order to learn self-defense.
Among the ongoing uneasy days where she wondered if she would return to her original world, one day…
At Mitsuhide-san’s suggestion, I received lessons on ways to protect myself and was instructed by Katsuie-san and Nagahide-san without delay.
However, the two seemed to have different thoughts.
[KATSUIE]: “In all cases it’s physical strength! If she had a pair of legs that wouldn’t lose to any man, then she could get away from yakuma by herself, right?”
[NAGAHIDE]: “Don’t say such stupid things. With that, if she were to hurt her legs, then in one shot she’d become useless.”
[NAGAHIDE]: “She should go through exercises on the assumption of enemies being present, so that she’d know what actions to take in any situation.”
[KATSUIE]: “No way. What’s important, when it comes down to it, is definitely physical strength!”
.[NAGAHIDE]: “Hah…… it must be blissful to think that everything can be solved with muscles only.”
[KATSUIE]: “What’d ya say? You making fun of me!?”
[YUZUKI]: (Maybe I should stop them……?)
In the end, I told them that I’d like to learn things from both of them, and so they started teaching me every day.
From then on, I started difficult days where I studied with Mitsuhide-san throughout the morning, and then trained with Katsuie-san and Nagahide-san in the afternoon.
[KATSUIE]: “C’mon, c’mon, if you run slowly like that, the sun will go down!”
[YUZUKI]: (No more…… I can’t breathe……)
[KATSUIE]: “Hey! You’re not wearing armor like the others, so you can keep going a little longer! We’re adding another lap around the castle!”
The training was especially physically hard; my muscles hurt and exhaustion remained even into the next day…… Eventually, it started impeding my studies with Mitsuhide-san–
[MITSUHIDE]: “–san…… Are you listening?”
[YUZUKI]: “–…… Ah, yes!”
[YUZUKI]: (Crap, I dozed off a bit……)
[MITSUHIDE]: “…… Then, referring to the explanation of the part I just read, why don’t you try answering which one of these plants illustrated here is poisonous?”
[YUZUKI]: “Umm…… the left……”
[MITSUHIDE]: “…… It seems you are tired. You made the same mistake yesterday as well.”
[YUZUKI]: “I’m sorry……”
[MITSUHIDE]: “…… Then I shall explain again.”
[YUZUKI]: “O-Okay…… thank you.”
One night, after these days continued for a week. I needed to go to sleep early, but my body hurt and I couldn’t sleep at all.
[YUZUKI]: (I started training so I could live in this world, but to think it’d be this hard……)
[YUZUKI]: (When I started studying, it was supposed to be a link to searching for Himemiko-sama too……)
Before I knew it, it felt like what I was doing had slipped from my original goal.
[YUZUKI]: (…… Can I return to my own world? What if I’m here forever in this world like this……)
As my anxieties grew larger, the corner of my eyes became hot–
[YUZUKI]: (I want to go back to my world……)
Not having the energy to wipe the large tears that were spilling over, I closed my eyes like that.
[YUZUKI]: (…… mgh… Is someone… calling me……?)
[MITSUHIDE]: “–san…… Are you well?”
[YUZUKI]: “Ngh… huh, Mitsuhide-san……?”
[MITSUHIDE]: “You didn’t appear at breakfast so I thought to come……”
[YUZUKI]: “I-I’m sorry! I overslept……!”
I tried to hurriedly get up, but my body throbbed with pain here and there and, instinctively, I curled into a “C” shape.
[MITSUHIDE]: “…… Please do not force yourself. A relaxed posture is fine.”
[YUZUKI]: “I’m sorry……”
[MITSUHIDE]: “Your pallor does not seem well. Furthermore, your eyes are swollen…… Were you crying?”
[YUZUKI]: “………… Yes. A little bit yesterday……”
[MITSUHIDE]: “…… Let’s leave your studies and training aside for today.”
[YUZUKI]: “Huh! But……”
[MITSUHIDE]: “No, if your health is impaired, that would defeat the purpose. So, please, take it easy and rest.”
[YUZUKI]: “Okay. I’m sorry……”
[MITSUHIDE]: “No…… we are the ones who should apologize instead. We did not take your fatigue into consideration and were too strict.”
[YUZUKI]: “Not at all…… It’s because I don’t have any knowledge and can’t do anything alone……”
[MITSUHIDE]: “…… That is not the case. It cannot be helped that you have no knowledge concerning Shinga.”
[MITSUHIDE]: “Because you…… came from an alternate world, separate from this one, correct?”
[YUZUKI]: “Eh……! How do you……”
[MITSUHIDE]: “So it was like that…… Your dress and bearings did seem like that but……”
[MITSUHIDE]: “It was because you were not aware of given things like the Gekka Tribe and yakuma that anyone in Shinga would know about, which made me think that was a possibility.”
[YUZUKI]: “Do you possibly know about the world I live in too!?”
[MITSUHIDE]: “No…… It was after I met you that I learned of the existence of an alternate world.”
[MITSUHIDE]: “Moreover, Nobunaga-sama was the first person to talk about this possibility.”
[MITSUHIDE]: “Nobunaga-sama seemed to have noticed that you weren’t of this world from a considerably early time.”
[YUZUKI]: “Then everyone else knows too……”
[MITSUHIDE]: “No. Although it is not forbidden to speak about it, currently only Nobunaga-sama and I know.”
[MITSUHIDE]: “However…… I wonder why Nobunaga-sama spoke about educating you.”
[MITSUHIDE]: “Your blood is indispensable to uniting the country. It should be problematic if you were given knowledge rashly and returned home, but……”
[MITSUHIDE]: “In the first place, if you were to be used as a tool to unify the country, there are ways to deprive you of your freedom, break your mind, and make you into a puppet.”
[YUZUKI]: “B-Break my mind… no matter how you put it, that’s……”
[MITSUHIDE]: “…… Nobunaga-sama is someone who would do whatever is necessary to unite the country.”
[MITSUHIDE]: “However, he did not actually do so. I do not understand Nobunaga-sama’s thoughts but…… he may be testing you.”
[YUZUKI]: “…… Why are you telling me this?”
[MITSUHIDE]: “…… Why, indeed.”
[MITSUHIDE]: “Please, if nothing else, remember just this.”
[MITSUHIDE]: “Nobunaga-sama is generous to those who are obedient. As long as you obey, nothing bad will happen to you.”
[YUZUKI]: “…… I understand. I’ll remember.”
I could do nothing but nod at the words of Mitsuhide-san, who seemed sad somewhere.
