Chapter 3: The Art of Surviving a World of War
Nobunaga ordered Katsuie and Nagahide to train her in order to learn self-defense.
Among the ongoing uneasy days where she wondered if she would return to her original world, one day…
After that, Mitsuhide-san established two days of rest for me.
During that rest, he spoke with Katsuie-san and Nagahide-san, and re-considered the contents of my training so I could continue without overdoing it.
And then my new regime began. After a week–
[MITSUHIDE]: “How has it been now? Can you continue without straining yourself?”
[YUZUKI]: “Yes. Thanks to everyone, I’ve gotten used to it.”
A happy change was that, lately, Mitsuhide-san had began speaking to me more often.
[MITSUHIDE]: “I believe today’s training instructor was Nagahide, yes?”
[YUZUKI]: “Yes. He seems to be teaching me guidelines on how to respond during times of emergency.”
[MITSUHIDE]: “Aa, how very like Nagahide.”
There hadn’t been many opportunities to see Nagahide-san outside of training, so our conversations were still awkward.
But he knew as much as Mitsuhide-san did, and so I learned a lot every time we spoke.
[MITSUHIDE]: “Though I think Katsuie should also start teaching those things soon, rather than have you only run around the castle.”
[YUZUKI]: “Running has turned out to be pretty fun. It’s also a change of pace.”
[MITSUHIDE]: “Is that so. Then, please continue working hard like that.”
[YUZUKI]: “Of course!”
And then another week passed by quickly.
One day, during breakfast with everyone, the topic became about me.
[RANMARU]: “That’s amazing! Since then, you’ve continued to study and train every day for close to two weeks!”
[KATSUIE]: “Chin up! ‘Cause you’re quite a gutsy woman.”
[NAGAHIDE]: “Katsuie, don’t pamper her. What’s important is making use of what you studied and turning it into practical experience.”
[NAGAHIDE]: “Nobunaga-sama, in order to see how much she’s grown, may we do some light practical training?”
[NAGAHIDE]: “In this season, it won’t be difficult to sleep outdoors, and there shouldn’t be much danger in the Oda forests behind the castle.”
[NOBUNAGA]: “Very well. I leave this to everyone.”
[NAGAHIDE]: “My lord.”
[YUZUKI]: “Um… for that practical experience… am I possibly going to be doing it alone……”
[NAGAHIDE]: “As if that’s possible. If something happened to you then all our troubles of spending time on you would be wasted.”
[KATSUIE]: “Then I’ll go with ya!”
[NAGAHIDE]: “…… You?”
[KATSUIE]: “What’s with that uneasy look on your face!”
[MITSUHIDE]: “Then I shall accompany you as well. From the start, I was the one appointed to oversee you.”
[NOBUNAGA]: “I don’t mind. Go and do it.”
[YUZUKI]: (I don’t know what I’ll have to do to get practical experience but…… if Mitsuhide-san and Katsuie-san are with me then I think I’ll be able to do it somehow.)
A few days later, me, Mitsuhide-san, and Katsuie-san came to the forest behind the castle.
[YUZUKI]: “There’s this mountain behind the castle, huh.”
When I was doing a marathon around the castle, I only saw it in the distance, so I was surprised by its largeness when I stepped into it now.
[MITSUHIDE]: “Now, this is a practical exam but, firstly, it is a trial. In other words, we will be camping outdoors.”
[MITSUHIDE]: “What are you doing by replying. This is training for her, remember?”
[KATSUIE]: “I know, geez.”
[MITSUHIDE]: “Good gracious…… Well, first, shall we secure some food?”
[YUZUKI]: “Okay. Umm… are we looking for something like edible wild plants?”
[MITSUHIDE]: “That is correct. Now then, let us quickly–“
[KATSUIE]: “Hey, hey, wouldn’t dinner just become vegetables like that? We came to the mountains, so we should at least eat boar.”
[KATSUIE]: “Yeah. Wild boars are delicious.”
[MITSUHIDE]: “Well, eventually you may have to learn how to hunt…… but this time it is just, at most, a trial.”
[KATSUIE]: “Laaame. In that case, I’ll teach you how to skin a boar today!”
[YUZUKI]: “Uh… ummm, that’s……”
[KATSUIE]: “Which means I have to catch a boar!”
[MITSUHIDE]: “Ah!! Hey, Katsuie!”
[YUZUKI]: “He ran off, huh……”
[MITSUHIDE]: “…… Haa, there’s nothing that can be done. Let’s leave Katsuie and, as we planned, collect some wild plants.”
And like that, my practical training on the mountain began.
[YUZUKI]: (Let’s see… ah, this is edible.)
While recalling the knowledge on the wild plants I studied, I collected them with Mitsuhide-san.
[MITSUHIDE]: “This should be more than enough. Shall we go back?”
[YUZUKI]: “Yes. I’m coming right no–… ack!”
I carelessly slipped but Mitsuhide-san quickly caught me in his arms.
[MITSUHIDE]: “…… Are you alright?”
[YUZUKI]: “Yes. I’m sorr……!”
When I raised my head, Mitsuhide-san’s face was close enough for our breaths to overlap, and my heart skipped a beat.
[MITSUHIDE]: “Is something the matter?”
[YUZUKI]: “N-No, I’m sorry. Thank you.”
[MITSUHIDE]: “No, I’m glad you were not hurt.”
[MITSUHIDE]: “You are a woman, so please be fully careful in not sustaining any injuries that would leave a scar.”
[YUZUKI]: (This might be the first time someone worried like this about me being hurt…… I’m happy.)
The sun had completely descended and Mitsuhide-san and I were around a small fire.
[YUZUKI]: “…… Katsuie-san is late, huh. Could something have happened?”
[MITSUHIDE]: “Katsuie is one of the best commanders in Oda, so I believe your concern is unneeded. He should arrive soon when he sees the light of the fire.”
When he said that, the nearby bushes shook.
[YUZUKI]: “Ah, that has to be Katsuie-san! Katsuie-san, you’re late.”
But the person who appeared from the shaking bushes was an unknown man holding a sword–
[MITSUHIDE]: “–Watch out!”
The sword swung down, aiming at me–
