Chapter 4: What Lies Beyond Your Wish
Reports were received about there being eyewitness information on Himemiko in the Toyotomi territory, and so Nobunaga had Mitsuhide head an investigation.
At Ranmaru and Katsuie’s suggestion, she went to pray for her return to her old world but…
Seeing Ranmaru-kun in the corridor, I inadvertently called out to stop him but–
[YUZUKI]: (Oops… Katsuie-san had even said that Ranmaru-kun was terribly busy……)
[RANMARU]: “Did you call for me right now? … Ah, that book……”
.[YUZUKI]: “Ah… this is a book Mitsuhide-san lent about Shinga but the contents are a bit difficult……”
[RANMARU]: “If you would like, I’ll teach you…… is what I’d like to say, but I’m sorry, I’m tied up right now……”
[YUZUKI]: “Don’t worry. Oh… if you’d like, I can help?”
[RANMARU]: “Really? … Then, may I ask you to do one thing?”
[RANMARU]: “Paper and ink are kept in this storehouse. Can you replenish each room with the amount that’s written on this paper?”
[YUZUKI]: “Sure. I remember where the rooms are, so I’ll be okay. Leave it to me.”
[RANMARU]: “I’m sorry for having you do such an odd job……”
[YUZUKI]: “Usually I’m indebted to everyone so I’d like to return the favor, at least this much.”
[RANMARU]: “Alright. Thank you very much.”
[ODA SOLDIER]: “Ranmaru-sama! Where are you? An urgent letter that needs confirmation from you has arrived! Ranmaru-sama!”
[RANMARU]: “Ah, I need to go! Sorry, I’m leaving this place to you!”
[YUZUKI]: “Now then, first I’ll gather everything in this paper… ah!!”
[YUZUKI]: (I forgot to ask where the paper and ink are stored!)
I hurriedly searched for Ranmaru-kun’s form, but he was nowhere to be found already.
[YUZUKI]: (I even told him to leave it to me… what do I do. Now that it’s like this, I’ll just have to slowly look for it……)
[???]: “…… Hey.”
I tried to return to the storehouse but was stopped by a familiar voice.
When I turned around it was Nagahide-san, like I thought, and he was standing there with a displeased look.
[NAGAHIDE]: “What are you doing in front of the storehouse…… You aren’t possibly rummaging through things on your own, right?”
[YUZUKI]: “Wha! N-No! I’m helping Ranmaru-kun with replenishing papers and ink. But I failed to ask him where they were stored……”
As I explained, I showed the paper Ranmaru-kun gave me to Nagahide-san, and it seemed like he believed me.
[NAGAHIDE]: “…… Hm? These will be delivered to Nobunaga-sama’s room as well, huh… Looks like I have no choice. It’s troublesome, but I’ll help.”
[YUZUKI]: “Really!? Thank you so much!”
[NAGAHIDE]: “Don’t misunderstand. It’s for Nobunaga-sama. Come on, over here. Let’s hurry up and do it.”
And then I prepared the paper and ink with Nagahide-san. Nagahide-san, even though he continued to say everything was troublesome, instructed me politely.
He accompanied me in delivering paper and ink to the rooms, and so I was able to go around to each room efficiently.
[NAGAHIDE]: “–Alright. Next is just Nobunaga-sama’s room. Please take care not to behave rudely.”
[YUZUKI]: “Yes. Thank you very much for accompanying me up to now.”
[NAGAHIDE]: “I told you it was for Nobunaga-sama. Move your feet instead of your mouth.”
[YUZUKI]: (Mitsuhide-san said that Nagahide-san was obliging, and that might actually be true……)
And then the two of us came in front of Nobunaga-sama’s room.
[NAGAHIDE]: “Nobunaga-sama, we have come to replenish your paper and ink.”
[NOBUNAGA]: “…… Enter.”
[NAGAHIDE]: “My lord.”
I was also prompted by Nobunaga-san’s eyes to enter the room with the paper in hand.
[NOBUNAGA]: “You are here too, hm.”
[YUZUKI]: “Y-Yes… I’ll put the paper here.”
I placed the bundle of paper beside the wicker chest where his books were kept. And then I tried to leave the room, but Nobunaga-san was still looking at me.
[NOBUNAGA]: “…… Did you read the book. I handed one of my copies to Mitsuhide……”
[YUZUKI]: (That book is something Nobunaga-san himself copied!)
[YUZUKI]: “Umm…… it’s difficult so I haven’t read everything yet. But I’ll do my best to read it.”
[NOBUNAGA]: “Heh. A good mental attitude. Continue to apply yourself.”
[YUZUKI]: (This might be the first time… he’s said something like that to me……!)
While feeling my heart pound a bit, Nagahide-san and I left Nobunaga-san’s room together.
[YUZUKI]: “Nagahide-san, thank you for helping me.”
[YUZUKI]: “…… Nagahide-san?”
[NAGAHIDE]: “…… I’m not satisfied with just thanks being said.”
[YUZUKI]: “Huh……? Um, then what kind of thanks should I give……”
[NAGAHIDE]: “………… Nobunaga-sama’s copy… show me a bit of it.”
