Chapter 5: A Monkey’s Tail Moving Dangerously
A clue about the sacred treasures was seized, but Nobunaga appeared unconcerned about that with the Toyotomi Army’s threatening movements.
Furthermore, her actions were restricted as Nobunaga seemed to be wary of something…
When I was talking to Imari-kun, Nobunaga-san suddenly came into the room.
[NOBUNAGA]: “There was a strange presence…… Where is it……”
[YUZUKI]: (W-What do I do…… I need to hide Imari-kun somehow……)
For Imari-kun, who was hiding somewhere in the room, I picked up a dried apricot on the spur of the moment.
[YUZUKI]: “U-Um, I was just eating dried apricots right now. Ranmaru-kun bought these in town and, if it pleases you, would you like one?”
Holding one out nervously, Nobunaga-san took the apricot but–
[NOBUNAGA]: “…… Bite it.”
[YUZUKI]: “…… Me?”
He pushed the apricot he held to me.
[YUZUKI]: (I don’t really understand but…… I guess I should try eating a bit of it?)
While puzzled, I did as told and nibbled a little at the apricot.
[YUZUKI]: “I ate it.”
[NOBUNAGA]: “…… When you’re eating, be careful with your first bite. Do not ever put a lot in your mouth or eat it in one bite.”
[NOBUNAGA]: “If your tongue goes numb or starts to sting then spit it out immediately and wash out your mouth.”
[YUZUKI]: “Um…… that’s a countermeasure to poison… right?”
[YUZUKI]: “Ah! No way, when you had me bite it just now, was that to test for poison!?”
[NOBUNAGA]: “…… If Ranmaru bought it as a gift then there is no need to test for poison. However, it will be troubling if you are not cautious.”
Nobunaga-san took the apricot from my hand anew and threw it into his mouth to eat normally.
[NOBUNAGA]: “As one of my retainers, you must never be negligent in your vigilance.”
[YUZUKI]: (…… Is he giving advice?)
Nobunaga-san turned his back on me–
[NOBUNAGA]: “…… And, if you are going to give something to me, next time give me dried persimmons.”
Leaving those words behind, he left the room.
[YUZUKI]: (…… I wonder if he likes dried persimmons……?)
[IMARI]: “Fuuah…… I thought he found me. As expected of the Demon King Nobunaga, he’s terrifyingly sharp……”
[YUZUKI]: “…… Mm. Moreover… he told me to be vigilant.”
[YUZUKI]: (That might be natural though since Toyotomi people might have invaded Oda’s territory……)
[YUZUKI]: “Imari-kun, what should we do about the scroll……?”
[IMARI]: “Right…… In his state, it looks like we’ll be found before we sneak into his room, so let’s stop trying to sneak a look. We’ll try looking for another opportunity.”
Imari-kun returned to gathering information again and, after that, I spent the day in my room, unable to leave and bored.
Nagahide-san had not returned yet from his mission of “Pursuing Maeda Toshiie”.
Moreover, Katsuie-san and Mitsuhide-san were in an extreme hurry, heading to every location where they received information about sightings of Toyotomi people.
[YUZUKI]: (Not just Katsuie-san and Mitsuhide-san, but everyone in the castle is tense and prepared for the worst case scenario……)
[YUZUKI]: (I’m the only one… not doing anything……)
As I stared vacantly into space, feeling depressed–
[YUZUKI]: “W-What’s that noise!”
[YUZUKI]: “Again! It… sounds like firecrackers……”
[ODA SOLDIER]: “The courtyard! Hurry and confirm!”
Hearing the soldiers run past in a panic, I gradually became afraid.
[YUZUKI]: (I should at least learn about what’s happening, right……)
[YUZUKI]: (I’m certain the soldiers said courtyard… ah! Nobunaga-san and the others are there.)
It would be bad to be seen, so I hid myself in cover and secretly peeked out.
[MITSUHIDE]: “…… It appears that cherry bombs were thrown in. They seem to be very small and no damages were suffered in particular……”
[RANMARU]: “It’s too ambitious to be a child’s prank, hm.”
[NOBUNAGA]: “…… Where is Katsuie?”
[MITSUHIDE]: “He is patrolling around the castle, just in case.”
[NOBUNAGA]: “I see. Have him report when he retu–……”
Nobunaga-san stopped speaking midway and those sharp eyes quickly turned to me directly.
[NOBUNAGA]: “–Why are you here.”
[YUZUKI]: (N-No way! He saw me!?)
