Chapter 6: Both Sides
The commanders started searching for the “sacred treasure” written in the scroll obtained at Nobunaga’s castle, and which might be a clue to Himemiko.
However, Hideyoshi seemed to be pondering over something…?
[YUZUKI]: (Mitsunari-san told me to wait obediently but I can’t stop thinking about the sacred treasure……)
[YUZUKI]: (There might be some records in the reference room, so I’ll try peeking at them.)
[MITSUNARI]: “…… Hm?”
[YUZUKI]: “Wah, M-Mitsunari-san!”
When I stealthily opened the reference room door, I met eyes with Mitsunari-san who was inside.
[MITSUNARI]: “…… Haa. You came to examine documents on the sacred treasures, right?”
[YUZUKI]: “I-I’m sorry…… I couldn’t stay still no matter what…… I was thinking there might be some documents at least……”
[MITSUNARI]: “That’s what I thought.”
Mitsunari-san sighed with an exasperated look and I felt awkward.
[YUZUKI]: “U-Um…… why are you here, Mitsunari-san?”
[MITSUNARI]: “I also came to search for documents on the sacred treasures.”
[YUZUKI]: “Huh? Weren’t you putting together a search group to look……”
[MITSUNARI]: “Toshiie and the others figured you wouldn’t be able to wait obediently and stated that we should try searching first.”
[YUZUKI]: “Ah… sorry……”
[MITSUNARI]: “You don’t have to apologize. Because the search for Himemiko is also significant for the Toyotomi Army.”
Mitsunari-san’s tone was very frank, but I could feel a certain kindness in it.
[YUZUKI]: “Th… thank you……!”
[MITSUNARI]: “…… There’s no reason for you to thank me…… In any case, since you are here as well, why don’t we try dividing the search.”
Dividing the labor with Mitsunari, I checked through documents and records.
[YUZUKI]: (Hmm… this shelf doesn’t seem to have any information in particular……)
[YUZUKI]: “Even though I want to find Himemiko-sama as soon as possible……”
When I unconsciously murmured this, I felt excessively impatient. To change my mood, I looked back in Mitsunari-san’s direction.
[YUZUKI]: “Mitsunari-san, how are yo–……”
Mitsunari was staring at my face absently with his book open.
[YUZUKI]: “U-Um…… Mitsunari-san? Is something wrong……?”
[MITSUNARI]: “Eh? Ah… no, it’s nothing. I was simply thinking a little……”
[YUZUKI]: “I… see…?”
[YUZUKI]: (But I wonder why he was looking at me……?)
[MITSUNARI]: “…… May I ask a question?”
[YUZUKI]: “Sure… what is it.”
[MITSUNARI]: “Hypothetically, if the sacred treasure were to be found and you were to obtain some kind of clue connected to Himemiko.”
[MITSUNARI]: “If you knew how to return home back to your old world…… I suppose you would go in the end?”
[MITSUNARI]: “You aren’t of any use in terms of pure military potential, it’s inefficient to have you help with office work, and there are many times where you are a burden.”
[YUZUKI]: (Um… is he… angry at me… right now……?)
[MITSUNARI]: “However, Hideyoshi-sama seems to be as interested in you as usual, and……”
[MITSUNARI]: “It could be said that you are somewhat necessary to the Toyotomi Army.”
Not noticing how puzzled I was, Mitsunari-san continued with even more words.
[MITSUNARI]: “Personally, I don’t care whether you are here or not.”
[MITSUNARI]: “But there may be people in the Toyotomi Army who would be sad if you returned back to your old world.”
[YUZUKI]: “Um…… Mitsunari-san?”
[MITSUNARI]: “…… What is it?”
[YUZUKI]: “Uh… um, in other words, what are you trying to say……?”
When I was unable to resist asking, Mitsunari-san’s eyes wandered as if he was discomposed.
[MITSUNARI]: “R-Right now, um, that was, I mean……–I-It’s nothing.”
[YUZUKI]: “Huh!? B-But, Mitsunari-san, didn’t you want to say something……”
[MITSUNARI]: “It was nothing important, so you may forget it please.”
[MITSUNARI]: “…… Haa, good gracious. It seems we have wasted a bit of time with idle talk. My work won’t be able to progress like this.”
[MITSUNARI]: “I will search through the rest, so please go somewhere else.”
[YUZUKI]: “Eh, but there’s still more than half remaining……”
[MITSUNARI]: “I will be fine. I am more suitable for these documents here than you.”
[MITSUNARI]: “Furthermore, the more I think about it, the more inefficient it seems to have the two of us be in this reference room.”
[MITSUNARI]: “Why don’t you try going to the warehouse? Toshiie and the others are searching there, and there may be something.”
[YUZUKI]: “O-Okay. Then… I’ll leave the rest to you, thank you.”
While being at a loss as to Mitsunari-san’s unapproachable aura, I left the reference room.
And as I walked through the hall I recalled Mitsunari-san’s words back there again.
[YUZUKI]: (…… Ah, could it be that Mitsunari-san was thinking that he’d be lonely without me……?)
[YUZUKI]: (…… Nah, that can’t be it.)
I smiled wryly at the thought that came to mind and hurried to the warehouse.
