Chapter 7: Past Mistakes and Resolve for the Future

Nobunaga, who obtained a sacred treasure, set up a meeting with Toyotomi as his next move.

Chosen as the emissary, Mitsuhide headed to the Toyotomi territory prepared for death in order to settle the past, but……

Chapter 7.4

[MITSUHIDE]: “The moment I pointed my blade at Nobunaga-sama, Hideyoshi appeared.”

[YUZUKI]: “Hideyoshi-san……?”

[MITSUHIDE]: “…… Yes. Hideyoshi had appropriated the land and, during his return to the castle, seemed to have heard a report on Nobunaga-sama having gone on a field investigation and decided to join him……”

[MITSUHIDE]: “Having witnessed the scene of me thrusting a sword at Nobunaga-sama, the situation between my soldiers and Hideyoshi’s soldiers became a battle.”

.[MITSUHIDE]: “As a result, I was defeated by Hideyoshi and those soldiers and seized as a traitor.”

[YUZUKI]: “Then, just going by the situation, Hideyoshi-san and his men saved Nobunaga-san, huh……”

[MITSUHIDE]: “…… Yes. However, Nobunaga-sama did not punish my rebellion. Far from that……”

[NOBUNAGA]: “How admirable to have deceived this Nobunaga.”

[NOBUNAGA]: “…… Your slyness and skill in schemes is, as I thought, indispensable to my army.”

[MITSUHIDE]: “Saying that, he commended my ability rather than charging me with crimes.”

[YUZUKI]: “…… How do I say it, that’s very like Nobunaga-san to think that way, huh.”

[MITSUHIDE]: “Yes…… However, everyone was not in agreement with me becoming innocent.”

[MITSUHIDE]: “…… The commanders who did not consent to my return to the Oda Army united and raised an objection to Nobunaga-sama; the head being none other than Hideyoshi.”

[YUZUKI]: “Hideyoshi-san……?”

[MITSUHIDE]: “Yes…… But that was natural, because the disappearance of my sins meant that, at the same time, Hideyoshi’s achievement of saving his lord from a traitor disappeared too.”

[MITSUHIDE]: “Hideyoshi said “I can’t stay in an army that approves of a traitor’s existence” and broke away from Nobunaga-sama…… Not only that, but he also waged a war.”

[YUZUKI]: “Wha!? A war started immediately……!? Isn’t that a bit fast……”

[MITSUHIDE]: “I agree…… Perhaps Hideyoshi had always been waiting for an opportunity to break away. Because he has a desire to climb, which could also be called ambition.”

[MITSUHIDE]: “In any event, due to my rebellion and Hideyoshi’s successive one, the Oda Army was in considerable turmoil. Hideyoshi must have seen that as a good opportunity to wage a war.”

[MITSUHIDE]: “…… However, even in such a difficult situation, only Nobunaga-sama alone remained calm to the very end.”

[MITSUHIDE]: “I was immediately brought back to the front line and fought together with Nobunaga-sama…… and then, utilizing many strategies, we somehow overcame Hideyoshi’s insurrection.”

[YUZUKI]: “…… So this kind of thing happened.”

[YUZUKI]: (Mitsuhide-san and Hideyoshi-san…… there’s a deeper connection between the two than I had thought……)

[MITSUHIDE]: “…… Later, I heard Nobunaga-sama’s thoughts.”

[MITSUHIDE]: “…… Nobunaga-sama appropriated the mountainous lands because it was judged to be dangerous with the tendency for yakuma to appear.”

[MITSUHIDE]: “It was clear that it was too late for the village. However, there would be a considerable amount of people who would not want to leave the homes they were born in.”

[MITSUHIDE]: “Nobunaga-sama, having thought to that extent, took a strong measure. Even if his own reputation dropped, he prioritized the life of his people. And yet, I……”

[YUZUKI]: “Mitsuhide-san……”

[MITSUHIDE]: “…… I was the only one who couldn’t believe in that man…… I lacked resolve.”

[MITSUHIDE]: “Everything was brought by my weakness…… By all rights, I do not qualify to call myself a retainer of Oda–“

[KATSUIE]: “–SHADDUP! As a man, how long are ya gonna be dragged along by the past!”

[MITSUHIDE]: “Guagh……!”

At that moment Katsuie-san, who had burst in with force, struck Mitsuhide-san’s cheek.

[YUZUKI]: “K-Katsuie-san……!? And Ranmaru-kun as well…..!”

[RANMARU]: “…… I’m sorry. I saw the whole story with Kastuie-san, after he told me to come with him since he was worried about Mitsuhide-san.”

[KATSUIE]: “Geez, listen to you talk, being all hesitant and stuff!”

[KATSUIE]: “Yeah, that time you rebelled, I did think what is that idiot fucking doing! I’m gonna kill him!”

[KATSUIE]: “But Nobunaga-sama told us to disregard it! So everything’s over with that already!”

[RANMARU]: “Well, there were still complaints for a while……”

[KATSUIE]: “ANYWAY! Yo, Mitsuhide!”

[MITSUHIDE]: “…… Yes?”

[KATSUIE]: “………… I trust you.”

[MITSUHIDE]: “Eh……?”

[KATSUIE]: “You said it in front of Nobunaga-sama, didn’t you. That even if it takes that live of yours, you’d fulfill his order.”

[KATSUIE]: “…… I believe that.”

[KATSUIE]: “Because I’m no help at all in using head stuff like that……”

[MITSUHIDE]: “Katsuie……”

[KATSUIE]: “That’s all I wanted to say. See ya, I’m gonna sleep!”

[RANMARU]: “I can’t cleanly divide things like Katsuie-san but…… Nobunaga-sama chose you, Mitsuhide-san, to be the negotiator.”

[RANMARU]: “So, for Nobunaga-sama, I will do my utmost to help you. Now then, excuse me……”

Katsuie-san and Ranmaru-kun, after telling Mitsuhide-san their thoughts and feelings, returned to their rooms.

[MITSUHIDE]: “Katsuie… Ranmaru…….”

[YUZUKI]: “Ah… that reminds me, Nagahide-san also looked like he was going to call out to you.”

[MITSUHIDE]: “Nagahide-san…?… In the end, I’m a useless man, aren’t I. I’ve caused everyone to have needless worries.”

[YUZUKI]: “I don’t think so. Everyone is honestly concerned for you, Mitsuhide-san. They can’t say it well though……”

[YUZUKI]: “Like what Katsuie-san said, I also believe in Mitsuhide-san. So, please don’t call yourself useless.”

[MITSUHIDE]: “I… see. Right now, what I ought to be doing is not self-condemnation but answering everyone’s thoughts.”

Maybe he was unbound by the past a little with my words, because after Mitsuhide-san took in a deep breath, his expression became clear somewhere.

[MITSUHIDE]: “Will you lend your ability to believe to a person such as me?”

[YUZUKI]: “Yes, of course!”

[YUZUKI]: (Tomorrow is finally the day to set off to the Toyotomi territory…… I don’t know what I can do but I’ll try my best for Mitsuhide-san and everyone…!)

MITSUHIDE IS SO TRAGIC. He deserves to be wrapped in a blanket and passed hot chocolate because what a rough life ;w; IT’S NOT YOUR FAULT YOU DOUBTED NOBUNAGA!! That man doesn’t say anything about his plans and blind trust borders on fanaticism and that’s scary!! Despite how much I like Nobunaga, I’m still side-eyeing the way he treats his people because on one hand he praises them for one-upping him (a la Mitsuhide) but yet also expects his word to be absolute? So it’s like, if you do try to get clever and want to get promoted, there’s always the chance that you’ll go too far or Nobunaga won’t be impressed and will kill you for disobeying him LOL but there’s also a chance you can get promoted (spared) like Mitsuhide.

But yeah! I think it’s an interesting twist and they delve into it more too in CH8 Toyotomi :’)) I’m gonna have to look up some things again to put an impromptu history lesson, haha.

(Mitsuhide is just so. aesthetic. Hands down he has the prettiest character art in all his cards!)

Thank you for translating this! Good work as usual! 😊
By far this is my most favorite part fron chapter 7. So much feel and we can see the bond between Nobunaga’s retainers. In chapter 1 of Oda’s route, when Yuzuki asked them why Hideyoshi betrayed Nobunaga? I’m kind of have guessed that what if Mitsuhide betrayed Nobunaga once and Hideyoshi can’t approve Nobunaga’s decision to forgive Mitsuhide, that’s why Hideyoshi and the other Toyotomi’s retainers leave the Oda clan. So when i finally played this chapter, it’s actually shocked me to know that my guess is right but of course there’s a much deeper meaning behind Mitsuhide and Hideyoshi’s act. Honestly, i just want them to be back together, but considering the last part of this chapter, i didn’t know what will happen with them at all. :”(

Oh snap, you were right on the mark with that one LOL I remember when I first read that bit I was like “huh… why /did/ they do it this way?? just to make their version of the sengoku period more interesting?” I REGRET DOUBTING THEM BECAUSE THEIR VERSION HURTS MORE SOBS. And yeah, I love how their bonds are shown here too ;3; though also crying at poor Mitsuhide and his lack of self-esteem and how much he blames himself for everything.

I don’t know how I feel about them getting together again especially after all this history. Like at this point I don’t think Hideyoshi can stand for anything but equality (the way he stood beside Nobunaga in the past in the anime was badass) but I can’t see Nobunaga standing for that so it’s like an inevitable clash? |D;; Oh man, if they DO get together though and then have to attack the other armies (while having behind-the-scenes conflict with them trying to one-up and sabotage each other) I’m gonna die, especially because Oda and Toyotomi are like the power armies right now in Shinga.
