Chapter 8: The Reason
Dismissing the summons to surrender from Nobunaga, Hideyoshi demanded an alliance on equal footing.
Hideyoshi had a reason he would not concede on for why he would never return to being Nobunaga’s vassal……
[MITSUHIDE]: “Please return obediently to Nobunaga-sama before our lord changes his mind.”
[YUZUKI]: (Hideyoshi-san, what are you going to do……!?)
As I watched with my heart pounding nervously, Hideyoshi-san opened his mouth slowly.
[HIDEYOSHI]: “About that talk we had just now where you arbitrarily decided that if we had a fight my side would lose…”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “We don’t know who will win without fighting, don’t you think?”
Hideyoshi-san’s words did not show any hesitation or panic. Rather, he seemed amused.
[HIDEYOSHI]: “Furthermore…… if anything, you’re the ones who don’t want to fight, right?”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “That’s why emissaries have been sent to us like this. Am I wrong?”
[MITSUHIDE]: “In other words, you are saying you do not mind fighting against Oda…… Are you prepared for Toyotomi’s lands to become a battlefield?”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “Well, even I don’t want to hurt my people aimlessly. So……”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “If you’re saying you want us to return as vassals then…… in the sense that you should take clear responsibility for your mistakes, I’d like you to die. Mitsuhide.”
[YUZUKI]: (Wha… die…!?)
At that cold voice and words, I involuntarily shuddered, feeling a chill run through my body.
[KATSUIE]: “…… HAAH!? Bastard, you’re fucking–“
[MITSUHIDE]: “Hold, Katsuie.”
[MITSUHIDE]: “…… Hideyoshi, your terms right now is not what you truly desire, correct?”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “Haha, as expected of Nobunaga-sama’s right hand. You could tell.”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “That’s how it is. I don’t feel like returning under Nobunaga.”
[MITSUHIDE]: “You will not return to his jurisdiction. However, you are saying you do not wish to fight either?”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “Yes. What it comes down to……”
Raising his head, Hideyoshi-san crossed his arms and showed a small smile.
[HIDEYOSHI]: “Is that I’ll consider an alliance as equals.”
[MITSUHIDE]: “I see…… I understand your demands.”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “That being the case, if you want to set up another meeting, let’s talk together at that time as two generals–“
[HIDEYOSHI]: “…… is what I want you to tell Nobunaga-sama. Can you?”
[MITSUHIDE]: “…… Very well. I will certainly convey that.”
Those words from Mitsuhide-san announced the end of the tense conference at last.
[YUZUKI]: (Haa…… even though I was just secretly watching, I feel strangely tired……)
As everyone gathered in the hall to take a breather, Toshiie-san smacked the floor in frustration.
[YUZUKI]: “…? Toshiie-san? What’s wrong–“
[TOSHIIE]: “It’s because of me that you got found out by Oda……”
Toshiie-san suddenly turned his body to me.
[TOSHIIE]: “Shit… I’m sorry!”
[YUZUKI]: “Um… that’s……”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “Now, now, now, don’t worry about it, Toshiie. Sneaking into Oda territory was originally my plan that I proposed.”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “Besides, during the discussion just now, her existence was used as a bargaining chip but–“
[HIDEYOSHI]: “Hand the girl over or hand the sacred treasure over…… demands like that didn’t come.”
[MITSUNARI]: “…… Yes. It was a bit unexpected.”
[KANBEE]: “It appears that, for Oda, gaining Toyotomi as an ally is a matter of the highest priority.”
[HANBEE]: “Meaning that they really are at their wits’ end about something~, huh.”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “Hmm…… Kanbee, there hasn’t been any useful information from the spies you sent out, right?”
[KANBEE]: “Yes. Apart from Uesugi and Date, Takeda and Sanada, and other allied groups clashing soon.”
[YUZUKI]: (Huh…… that means a large war will be happening……?)
[HIDEYOSHI]: “It’ll be okay. That won’t impact us over here immediately, so don’t worry.”
Due to the uneasy look on my face, Hideyoshi-san said that and grinned widely.
[HANBEE]: “If those allied forces collide, even if they don’t affect us, Oda will be troubled, huh~.”
[MITSUNARI]: “Well, if the coalitions of Takeda and Uesugi clash and reached a conclusion……”
[MITSUNARI]: “The next target would most likely be Oda territory, hm.”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “And Oda is guarding against that, or……”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “There’s the possibility that they’re aiming to profit while others fight, when Uesugi and Takeda are weakened from their clash.”
[KANBEE]: “…… In any event, it appears we have insufficient information to determine Oda’s true intentions.”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “Hmm. Now it’s just seeing how Nobunaga’s going to act……”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “…… A letter arrived.”
Several days after the meeting, we gathered in the hall for a war council.
[MITSUNARI]: “That’s… from Oda, is it not?”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “Yep. It says that Nobunaga himself will respond at the conference.”
[TOSHIIE]: “Meaning that Oda is meeting us halfway to tie an alliance with Toyotomi, right!”
[HANBEE]: “Mmmm, I wonder. It might not be that simple~.”
[MITSUNARI]: “Yes. Our opponent is that Oda Nobunaga. If we are careless, there is a possibility we will be driven into a disadvantage in one strike.”
Everyone’s gaze gathered on Hideyoshi-san who didn’t talk.
[KANBEE]: “…… Hideyoshi-sama.”
[KANBEE]: “At times like these, you should do as you like.”
