Chapter 8: Reason
Dismissing the summons to surrender from Nobunaga, Hideyoshi demanded an alliance on equal footing.
Hideyoshi had a reason he would not concede on for why he would never return to being Nobunaga’s vassal……
Why was Hideyoshi-san purposefully trying to be rivals with Nobunaga-san……
When I asked this, Hideyoshi-san looked at me with a troubled expression.
[HIDEYOSHI]: “…… Could it be that you’re interested in Nobunaga?”
.[YUZUKI]: “No, that’s not it. I want to know about……”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “Hmm? Then who do you want to know about?”
[YUZUKI]: “Geez, please don’t tease me.”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “Haha, sorry, sorry. I wasn’t trying to do that though.”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “The reason why I want to be rivals with Nobunaga, huh…… It’s not that complicated.”
Hideyoshi-san casually leaned closer to me and started talking.
[HIDEYOSHI]: “It’s probably because Nobunaga picked me up.”
My eyes widened at that unexpected answer.
[HIDEYOSHI]: “Meeting Nobunaga, my abilities were discovered, I was taught various things, and as I watched and stole things–“
[HIDEYOSHI]: “I gained status, power, and authority, step-by-step.”
It seemed to me like there was a slight nostalgia tinging his light words.
[HIDEYOSHI]: “But no matter how far I advanced, I never felt like I was catching up to Nobunaga’s back.”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “At that moment, Mitsuhide started a rebellion. And, using that opportunity, Toyotomi was able to go on the offensive.”
Hideyoshi-san narrowed his eyes a little, as if remembering those times.
[HIDEYOSHI]: “…… Not as a vassal, but as a general leading an army, fighting with our lives–“
[HIDEYOSHI]: “For the first time I was able to feel like I was getting close to that back.”
Speaking up to that point, Hideyoshi-san looked over at me and smiled with enjoyment.
[HIDEYOSHI]: “And now I’m surrounded by reliable comrades and in a place where it feels like I could “unite the whole country”–“
[HIDEYOSHI]: “There are other warlords aiming for the world but the one to surpass is…… Nobunaga.”
Hideyoshi-san’s words were covered in fervor.
[HIDEYOSHI]: “I want to show him…… that I’m not the monkey he used to know.”
[YUZUKI]: (I see. That’s why Hideyoshi-san is like that to Nobunaga-san……)
[HIDEYOSHI]: “That’s why I need to apologize to you in advance.”
[YUZUKI]: “…? For what?”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “In truth, it might be easier to grab clues about Himemiko if we establish a firm alliance with the Oda Army.”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “But…… I can’t give an inch on this matter about Nobunaga.”
Hideyoshi-san looked at me intently and searchingly as he continued talking.
[HIDEYOSHI]: “If by any chance, because of this, we get further away from clues about Himemiko, you won’t hate me, will you?”
[YUZUKI]: (Hideyoshi-san…… he’s that concerned about how I said I wanted to return home to my old world……)
[YUZUKI]: “…… There’s no way I could hate you.”
[YUZUKI]: “No matter what the result of the talks are, I won’t leave the Toyotomi Army.”
Looking back, I was suddenly pressed into a marriage, and put into a prison but……
[YUZUKI]: “Because the place I belong is with Toyotomi.”
I returned his gaze directly and conveyed my feelings.
[HIDEYOSHI]: “…… Thanks. You’ve given me courage.”
Hideyoshi-san’s face brightened in a flash.
[HIDEYOSHI]: “With this I feel like I could even fight the Demon King…!”
I looked at Hideyoshi-san’s smile and felt its reliability.
After that, several days passed, and after the conference was officially decided upon the Toyotomi Army ran around noisily making preparations.
[YUZUKI]: (Everyone seems busy. I wish I could help out more with things……)
At that moment, I heard a loud bang from the courtyard and headed there, surprised.
[HIDEYOSHI]: “Alriiiiight. Let’s test this matchlock next.”
For some reason in the courtyard Hideyoshi-san and the others seemed to be test firing matchlocks.
[YUZUKI]: “We’re just going to talk and you’re going to bring those things!?”
I called out, a little shocked.
[HIDEYOSHI]: “Ahaha. Because everything won’t always work out well.”
Hideyoshi-san, who turned around nimbly, was all smiles as he said those meaningful words.
[YUZUKI]: (He’s saying if the meeting doesn’t go well…… those might be needed……?)
While I felt uneasy, Hideyoshi-san showed a fearless smirk……
(T/N: History lesson time! This is a true story because Hideyoshi started off as a nobody with peasant origins (he didn’t even have the name Toyotomi Hideyoshi until later; and actually took parts of his name from Katsuie and Nagahide at one point) and was Nobunaga’s sandal-bearer until he proved his worth and became one of Nobunaga’s most distinguished generals. After Nobunaga’s death he pretty much carried out the rest of Nobunaga’s ambition to unite the country after hunting down Mitsuhide in record time, killing him, and presenting his head at Nobunaga’s funeral. Actually, while looking up Hideyoshi’s history I found this site called Badass of the Week and the entry on Hideyoshi is hilarious (there’s one on Nobunaga too and how crazily ruthless he was).)
