SNB Uesugi ~ Chapter 1.3 ~

Chapter 1: Indomitable Perseverance

Explaining the circumstances of how she came from another world, she searched for a way to return to her original world.

First, when she thought to investigate the forest where she first collapsed, she headed to the actual place together with Kagekatsu and Kanetsugu, but…

Chapter 1.3

[KANETSUGU]: “So, those Takeda Army guys are invading Uesugi territory…”

Kanetsugu-san and Kagekatsu-kun exchanged uneasy looks.

[KAGEKATSU]: “It isn’t far here… from the castle. If we leave this alone… it’s dangerous…”

.[KANETSUGU]: “Yeah… if that huge force attacks the castle then even Kenshin-sama will be…”

[KAGEKATSU]: “Mm… we need to let everyone know immediately…”

[KANETSUGU]: “There’s no choice, we’re changing our plans. We’ll get horses at the bottom of the mountain.”

[KANETSUGU]: “Hey, you. Can you ride a horse?”

[YUZUKI]: “… I’m sorry, I can’t.”

[KANETSUGU]: “Che. How can I bring along a person who can’t ride when we’re racing against time. You and that baby tanuki need to go back together.”

[KANETSUGU]: “Once we get down to the bottom, I’ll tell you the way. Fortunately, it’s not a distance that you can’t walk.”

[KAGEKATSU]: “That’s… not possible… It’s dangerous…”

[KAGEKATSU]: “Because once the fighting starts… we don’t know what will become a battlefield.”

[KAGEKATSU]: “Imari is tiny so he might be able to run or hide… but she…”

[KANETSUGU]: “And I’m saying there’s no way we can take along a burden!”

[KANETSUGU]: “We need to tell everyone as soon as possible, or the Uesugi Army might be destroyed!”

[KANETSUGU]: “Which is important to you! That girl or Uesugi!?”

[YUZUKI]: “… Kagekatsu-kun. Don’t worry about me, I’ll go back somehow.”

[YUZUKI]: “Kagekatsu-kun?”

[KAGEKATSU]: “… No. Even then, no.”

Kagekatsu-kun declared that decisively and turned back to Kanetsugu-san.

[KAGEKATSU]: “Kanetsugu… go ahead and tell my father about this… I… will bring this girl and Imari back.”

[KANETSUGU]: “Idiot, what are you saying!”

[KANETSUGU]: “You’re the heir to Uesugi, you know!? If you’re found by the Takeda Army you’ll definitely be killed!”

[KAGEKATSU]: “That danger is the same for this girl…”

[KANETSUGU]: “No, even if they find her, they might overlook her as a village girl!”

[KAGEKATSU]: “Might… right? If they don’t overlook her then…”

[KANETSUGU]: “Kagekatsu…! Why are you supporting this girl so much!?”

Kagekatsu-kun answered Kanetsugu-san’s words without hesitation.

[KAGEKATSU]: “This girl… is an important person… my father decided to protect…”

[KAGEKATSU]: “I absolutely need to… protect her…”

[YUZUKI]: “Kagekatsu-kun…”

[KANETSUGU]: “… Che, fine.”

[KANETSUGU]: “But be careful, Kagekatsu. And you! Don’t pull Kagekatsu down!”

[YUZUKI]: “Got it!”

[KANETSUGU]: “Alright! Now let’s run down to the bottom already.”

When we explained the situation to the villagers they lent us their fastest horse.

Kanetsugu-san nimbly got onto the horse and, leaving the words “Be careful!” with us, he kicked the horse and went back towards the castle.

Lacking the time to watch his disappearing back, me, Imari-kun, and Kagekatsu-kun started walking cautiously while taking cover so as to not be found by enemy soldiers.

[YUZUKI]: “I’m sorry, Kagekatsu-kun. We’re in this situation because of me…”

[KAGEKATSU]: “Why are you apologizing…? I’m the one… who suggested going to the mountain.”

[YUZUKI]: “But… if we’re found by the enemy army along our way then…”

[KAGEKATSU]: “… Don’t worry about that right now. I’ll… do my best to return you back safely…”

[YUZUKI]: “Kagekatsu-kun… thank you.”

The moment I smiled we heard the sound of rustling bushes in the distance.

[KAGEKATSU]: “… Over here.”

[YUZUKI]: “Ah, okay…”

I held my breath again while Kagekatsu-kun pulled me by the hand and we started moving with quiet footsteps.

But it seemed like the Takeda Army had already drew near to us–

[TAKEDA SOLDIER]: “Someone’s there!”

[YUZUKI]: “!”

We were discovered by soldiers of the Takeda Army who appeared to be searching the area.

Kagekatsu-kun immediately stepped in front of me to protect me and pulled out his sword.

[TAKEDA SOLDIER]: “Hm? You’re… Uesugi’s…!”

[TAKEDA SOLDIER]: “There’s no doubt, it’s Uesugi Kagekatsu! UESUGI KAGEKATSU IS OVER HERE!”

At those words enemy soldiers gathered one after another.

[KAGEKATSU]: “… This looks pretty difficult.”

[YUZUKI]: “What do we do, Kagekatsu-kun…!”

Kagekatsu-kun replied to my panic in a gentle voice.

[KAGEKATSU]: “… It’ll be okay. I’ll definitely protect you… Believe in me.”

[TAKEDA SOLDIER]: “What’re you guys whispering about over there! … ORAAA!”

A single enemy soldier rushed out and stabbed with the point of his sword. But Kagekatsu-kun dropped his upper body back and nimbly switched so that his blade passed by the other one and slid towards the enemy’s side–

[TAKEDA SOLDIER]: “Che, don’t get carried away!”

Lightning-quick, another enemy soldier came to attack but Kagekatsu-kun drew me into him with his free hand and spoke in a cold voice.

[KAGEKATSU]: “… I won’t let you lay a single finger on this girl.”

A silver blade drew an arc as it attacked the enemy soldier and, immediately afterwards, a splash of blood scattered through the air.

Kagekatsu-kun was strong. But the number of enemy soldiers was simply too much…

[KAGEKATSU]: “Haa, haa…”

He couldn’t deal with them alone. Kagekatsu-kun, who was breathing roughly, seemed to have reached his limits already.

At this rate, Kagekatsu-kun will… I couldn’t help but speak when I felt that.

[YUZUKI]: “Kagekatsu-kun, that’s enough… Leave me and run.”

If he didn’t have someone to protect, he should have it a little easier.

[YUZUKI]: “Don’t mind me and run…!”

But Kagekatsu-kun, with his back still in front of me, shook his head roughly.

[KAGEKATSU]: “… I can’t leave you behind.”

[YUZUKI]: “But at this rate…”

[KAGEKATSU]: “… I already said it, just now. I’ll definitely protect you… so believe in me…”

[YUZUKI]: “Yes, but…!”

Kagekatsu-kun adjusted his stance with his sword but his feet staggered and it was like just standing took all that he had.

The enemy soldiers also seemed to notice that and, seeing it as a good opportunity, came attacking all at once.

Unable to do anything, I could only call out Kagekatsu-kun’s name. In that moment–

The shadow of a person leapt in and cut down the soldiers in the blink of an eye.

[YUZUKI]: “Eh…?”

Who was it…? With feelings of disbelief I turned my eyes to the owner of the blade and…

[KENSHIN]: “–Are you unharmed?”

There stood Kenshin-san with a quiet atmosphere drifting around him and his silver hair fluttering in the darkness of the night.

(T/N: Take a sip every time Kenshin gets a line of description to himself about his elegant and quiet atmosphere and flowing silver hair LOL. I’m kidding because I love these descriptions but it’s still hilarious to see the writing in each route and why I’m of the belief that they’re handled by different writers. I swear all the other characters get like one or two passing lines about their characteristic qualities but every description about Kenshin is so evocative LOL.)

That silver hair isn’t the only thing fluttering. There’s also the sound of my feeble heart at such an elegant entrance.

HAHAHA. You’re definitely in for a treat with how much description Kenshin gets in Uesugi chapters |D. He’s Mr. Glorious Entrance Man (and tragic principles).

Hoo boy~ glorious entrances and tragic principles. Check and check! There was a chapter where Kenshin fell, and I had the impression of a wilting flower u . u )) His impression is one of elegance my mind can’t shake lol. I don’t suppose he comes with his dork moments, does he xD

In general I think Kenshin is described very seriously in the main story but the interaction skits show how silly the generals can be (Nobunaga included) so you’ll probably find his dork moments there. Like how obsessed he is with plums LOL and the way he teases the heroine… and OH! His hobby of reading romance novels |D.

Well jerkass may have a point, since the enemy don’t know who Yuzuki is and what she can do she may have been safer hidden among the villagers. On the other hand they have taken up the responsibility of taking care of her and can’t completely leave her alone in a world she knows nothing about, especially the potential threat of encountering yakumas. Pretty much defeats the whole purpose of Kenshin’s defending the weak motto if their charge goes missing or gets hurt.

OH! That’s a super good point! I didn’t even consider the yakuma which we know are attracted to Yuzuki, so if she was left there that could have brought unintentional ruin to the village. And you’re right, even if she was probably safer in the village they can’t just drop their responsibility entirely. At the same time, the danger Kagekatsu was in because of that choice… and then the danger that Kenshin gets in… :’))) UESUGI MAKES ME SO SAD!! Their principles are so good but it also puts them in harm.

Kagekatsu is such a considerate and nice person.
I love how, when he was given that “girl or Uesugi” ultimatum by Kanetsugu, he can be decisive.
From a certain perspective, he may have been seen as foolish, gullible even, but I’m glad there is someone like him in Uesugi clan.
Just how did you raise him, Kenshin…?

LOL, perhaps the writer is in love with Kenshin? I tend to wax poetic about characters I love, and almost always talking about the hair. XD

Btw, this is out of topic, but I saw your tweets in your Twitter widget about the cnovel you’re reading, and LMAOOO, I have so much fun reading your descriptions. 😂😂😂 May I know the title?

That ultimatum was such a low-blow but I’m really surprised at how Kagekatsu handled it (it’s been so long I’ve totally forgotten all these minor details too LOL so it’s almost fresh for me as I go through translating) and also touched by how much he’s taken Kenshin’s principles to heart. Foolish and gullible could probably be used to describe both Kenshin and Kagekatsu with their whole “protect the weak and offer help to anyone who asks” philosophy but like you said T__T IT’S GOOD TO HAVE THESE PEOPLE. And ultimately, it takes courage and a strength to be kind in this war torn age and not ruthless like Nobunaga–

But… I gotta admit I’m actually on Kanetsugu’s side LOL. It would have been much safer to just have her go back alone or even stay in the village! I don’t get why they weren’t like “we’ll drop you off here and pick you up later” since they didn’t seem too concerned about the Takeda Army passing too close to the village they went through?? Unless that village is neutral?? But if it was then even more of a reason to drop her off there and have her just pass as an unrelated villager. Sticking Kagekatsu beside her is a huge flag to everyone and he’s the HEIR to Uesugi haha.

LOL maybe! But I’m also pretty sure it’s different writers cause there’s subtle differences in whether they use the kanji form of words or hiragana. IIRC in Oda and Toyotomi’s they use 呟いた for muttering/murmuring but in Uesugi it’s constantly written as つぶやいた |D they don’t wanna bother with making it kanji. There’s also differences in writing habits. I can’t remember if it was Oda or Date but everyone’s tossing gazes left and right and eyeing things, Uesugi is description-heavy, and I think Takeda’s is really chill with casual contact.

Hm, if it wasn’t the manga I was reading recently then it might have been “Hear My Heart: My World Falls into the River of Love”

What is even more amazing is that Kenshin remains a strong warlord even with that “foolish” philosophy, which proves just how strong he actually is.

I agree that the best answer would be to let her stay hidden in the village (making her go back alone is also dangerous, methinks). I doubt that village is neutral, it is still in Uesugi territory after all. My impression is that the Takeda soldiers are going straight to the heart of the territory, so they are not harassing the village, and therefore, it should be safe enough? *shrug*
Oh well, it’s probably just the author’s way to bring out Kagetsugu’s gentlemanly qualities…

LOL at “everyone’s tossing gazes left and right and eyeing things”, somehow in my mind, I imagine those warlords doing nothing but eyeing people and things, which can be really unnerving especially if it’s Nobunaga doing it. XDDD

Ah, yes, it’s that one! Thanks for the link. Now you have gotten me roped into this…
