SNB Uesugi ~ Chapter 2.4 ~

Posted on Updated on

Chapter 2: All Things Wholeheartedly

“Blood that has power” the same as Himemiko.

The moral within the army rose when they obtained this power in an unexpected place and that unification of the country would not be a dream.

But at that time, Kenshin issued an order.

Chapter 2.4

Ever since I was attacked by the yakuma in the castle town… it seemed that yakuma started to appear in Uesugi territory.

In order to protect the people, Kageie-san and Kanetsugu-san and the others led soldiers and went out daily to exterminate yakuma.

Each time I prayed for everyone’s safety in the castle. And then one day–

[KAGEIE]: “I told you not to talk about that anymore!”

[YUZUKI]: (Is that Kageie-san’s voice? He seems angry though, I wonder why…?)

When I looked around the area I saw Kageie-san and a vassal arguing at the end of a hallway.

[VASSAL]: “But it can only be because of that girl! Even the people saw the yakuma aiming at that girl in a straight line…”

[KAGEIE]: “That’s ridiculous. To think the yakuma came to Uesugi territory to target her.”

[KAGEIE]: “That’s as unbelievable as the talk about a strange power in her blood.”

[VASSAL]: “Strange power in her blood…?”

[KAGEIE]: “Ah! That’s, uh… it’s nothing! Anyway, we’ll do something about the yakuma so don’t worry about extra things!”

[YUZUKI]: “Um, Kageie-san…”

[KAGEIE]: “Uwah!? What, what’s wrong!?”

[YUZUKI]: “I heard you two talking, Kageie-san… um, about the yakuma targeting me…”

[KAGEIE]: “Aah, that has nothing to do with you!”

[YUZUKI]: (I don’t think so though…)

[KAGEIE]: “Anyway, forget everything you heard just now and go back to your room! Okay!?”

Beside Kageie-san, who said that, the vassal looked at me like one would a suspicious person.

[YUZUKI]: “… Okay, I understand.”

Unable to bear that, I accepted Kageie-san’s kindness and, as if escaping the eyes of the vassal, I left hurriedly.

On the way back to my room, this time I saw Kenshin-san and another vassal talking.

[VASSAL]: “The moment that girl came, the Takeda Army invaded. And now this time the yakuma have appeared shadowing that girl. Are you going to claim those are coincidences, Kenshin-sama!”

[VASSAL]: “It will be troubling if any more calamities are brought to us. You should drive that girl out of Uesugi immediately!”

[KENSHIN]: “No. I absolutely will not permit the banishment of that girl.”

[VASSAL]: “But!”

[KENSHIN]: “Before being swayed by trivial rumors, think about countermeasures for the yakuma.”

[YUZUKI]: (Kenshin-san is also protecting me…)

[YUZUKI]: (But it feels like the things the vassal said has some truth. It’s a little too coincidental, huh…)

After I returned to my own room, Kagemochi-san came to visit.

[KAGEMOCHI]: “There is something I wish to tell you…”

[YUZUKI]: “Is it about how I might be a girl who brings disaster to Uesugi?”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “… So you already know.”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “However, you do not need to be concerned. Those are simply rumors without any basis.”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “That battle was not the first time the Takeda Army came to attack in Uesugi territory, and it is not unusual for there to be a large outbreak of yakuma.”

[YUZUKI]: “But if it really is because of me…”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “What are you saying. Everything is simply a coincidence.”

[YUZUKI]: “… Can you really declare that, I wonder.”

Because I had already experienced an event that could not be settled as coincidence.

[YUZUKI]: “In the first place, my existence is an impossibility to you and the others, Kagemochi-san.”

[YUZUKI]: “On top of suddenly coming to “Shinga” from another world, I even have the same power as Himemiko-sama…”

[YUZUKI]: “In that case, it wouldn’t be strange if I had the power to draw in disasters, right.”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “… Even if you really bring about calamities, I will not drive you out.”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “Kenshin-sama has decided to shelter you. And so, no matter what is to occur, I am your ally.”

[YUZUKI]: “Kagemochi-san…”

Kagemochi-san smiled gently and, as if to reassure me, said this kindly.

[KAGEMOCHI]: “That is all I wished to tell you.”

After Kagemochi-san left my room, this time Kagekatsu-kun and Kanetsugu-san came.

The two silently took up positions in front of my room.

[YUZUKI]: “… What are you two doing?”

[KAGEKATSU]: “There’s no guarantee the vassals… won’t do anything strange…”

[KANETSUGU]: “We’re guarding you until the strange rumors die down. Even though we’re busy exterminating the yakuma, geez…”

[YUZUKI]: “I’m sorry, when you guys are so busy… but thank you.”

[KAGEKATSU]: “Don’t worry… because… I’m on your side…”

[KANETSUGU]: “Hah, I don’t plan on being on your side though.”

[YUZUKI]: “Huh…”

[KAGEKATSU]: “Hey… Kanetsugu…”

[KANETSUGU]: “If you haven’t done anything then be more unreserved. It’s because you’re sneaking around that everyone suspects you needlessly, you know?”

[KAGEKATSU]: “Kanetsugu. Stop.”

When Kagekatsu-kun said that in an unusually stronger tone, Kanetsugu-san sighed and then ruffled his own hair.

[KANETSUGU]: “… It’s not like I believe that you’re calling in disasters either.”

[KANETSUGU]: “I’m just telling you to walk tall because you’re innocent.”

[YUZUKI]: “… You’re right. Thanks.”

[YUZUKI]: (Everyone is protecting me… they’re worrying over me and being kind…)

But that’s exactly why their concern made me extremely apologetic right now.

It felt like I was being made very clear of the fact that I was causing trouble to everyone around me…

[YUZUKI]: (I’m grateful for everyone’s feelings, but…)

[YUZUKI]: (If I wasn’t even here in the first place then these things shouldn’t happen, right…)

On that day, I waited with Imari-kun until late at night before starting to act.

First, the biggest obstacle… I peeked at Kagekatsu-kun and Kanetsugu-san who were outside my room.

Fortunately, the two seemed to have fallen asleep.

[YUZUKI]: (Everyone’s been busy lately with the yakuma, huh…)

[YUZUKI]: (But I also called in those yakuma… I’m sorry for causing trouble. And…)

[YUZUKI]: “… Thank you for everything up to now.”

Murmuring that, I placed a futon over both of them, and left the room.

[IMARI]: “… Are you really sure?”

[YUZUKI]: “Mm… I’ve already decided to leave the castle.”

[YUZUKI]: “Because I can’t cause any more trouble for everyone in the Uesugi Army.”

[YUZUKI]: “I’ve gotten used to life in “Shinga” too, so I should be okay even without everyone’s help.”

[YUZUKI]: “The two of us will look for Himemiko-sama from here.”

[IMARI]: “I see…”

Imari-kun didn’t say anything further and followed me quietly.

It was easier than I thought to leave the castle.

I’m certain the guards were exhausted from exterminating yakuma.

While I walked through the dead silent castle, I thought back on all the days up to now and felt like stopping my feet many times, but…

[YUZUKI]: (… I can’t stay here.)

Telling myself that, I finally reached the gates.

There I looked back only once.

When I saw the castle that I had lived in up to now, ah, I really still felt like staying here– I felt like my decision would waver.

But I forcibly suppressed my feelings and said these words.

[YUZUKI]: “Thank you for everything up to now.”

Who that thanks was directed to, even I didn’t know…

I agree with Cey that it’s fun to see you and Wintermelon write long, thoughtful comments; I think a Fate AU for Senbura is somewhat iffy since there’s a main issue of “how OP is everyone with respect to their legend and to other individuals of their time.” I guess in terms of giving parameters like Strength A+ that’s easy, but the scope of power in the Noble Phatasm(s) and how Personal/Class Skills might be an issue in this power balancing? Class Skills depend on the vessel (Saber in this case), so Kenshin can get something like Magic Resistance B+ (could even add some detail about his Buddhist faith influencing the rank or how it can be lower because “magic” doesn’t exist in Shinga.) Personal Skills can be a little tricky, but the TYPE-MOON wiki lists all the traits and their ranks/brief descriptions of what those mean. Then there’s the fact the Holy Grail takes into account how other things can influence a Heroic Spirit’s summoning. For example, Semiramis never built the Hanging Gardens of Babylon in her life but the misconception that she did became so popular by the people that one of her Noble Phantasms IS the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. The perception of Kenshin during his “golden age” (which I would guess is the him during this warring era) and of him after death are going to influence his capabilities as a Servant. But then there’s what exactly his legend/history entail. Did Uesugi win the war, did he die and fail to unify Shinga, or is he some special case like Arthur/Artoria (where they made a contract with the World)? There’s also the fact Yuzuki might not be able to supply enough mana for him (but mana transfer is a viable option ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)), so all his parameters can suffer a rank or two down to compensate. Then I guess there’s the fact about Noble Phantasms which are notable objects/features of the Heroic Spirit and as of now Kenshin uh…only has his ideals (unless his Servant viability is influenced by the Uesugi Kenshin of our world which in itself opens up another issue)? So if anything he can create a Reality Marble that involves all this symbolism and whatnot like Unlimited Blade Works. Sorry this got kinda long lol. Overall, there’s potential for Fate AU (like a “Kenshin Alter” whose ideals of justice are grotesquely twisted or something because he managed to get corrupted by All the World’s Evils) but I feel it’s going have to address some inconsistencies first.

/o\ I don’t actually know enough about Fate to really carry that Fate AU concept any further, haha, but since SNB is drawing upon actual Sengoku Period history as well I think the legends of him being the personification of the God of War is enough to make him a Heroic Spirit |D As for what form his Noble Phantasm would actually take… m-maybe something like Alexander? LOL He gets to summon his army–.

Well what makes someone Heroic Spirits is their notable achievements (to quote the wiki pfft: Each Heroic Spirit is a unique existence, “the one and only,” who each stood out from the others of their time by performing deeds and possessing qualities that no other possessed), so it’s mainly based on what Kenshin did/is known for during his life which I guess is whatever he did during the war/his ideals that managed to make people still remember him even after he died? At best, the title “God of War” is a Personal Skill. Or simply it stays a nickname how Alexander is the “King of Conquerors” and Arthur/Artoria is the “King of Knights.” So, since he’s uh the Main Servant here, the AU should be where Uesugi did win the war and Kenshin was able to rule over Shinga as this benevolent authority( then he died peacefully. Or he died a tragic man whether after winning the war/during the war, unable to see the fruition of his ideals :’D). I guess for a Servant Profile it’d be something like this-
        True Name: Uesugi Kenshin
        Class Skills:
Magic Resistance: E (The actual use of “magic” doesn’t exist in Shinga, so he gets a low rank as compensation for his Class vessel. Though, if some magical stuff does end up happening later on I guess it can become D or C rank.)
Riding: C (Since there’s no notable anecdote or anything of his mount being something more than “just a horse,” he receives a low rank for a Saber.)
        Personal Skills:
Charisma: B++ (Now, this is where the ranking gets really subjective? If he did win the war and make Shinga this peaceful place for a while, maybe I’d add another + or just make it A/A-. Uh to give an idea of how ranking goes, B+ means it can temporarily surpass the numerical value of A, which is “50”; A- means it’s not quite A so it’s really “49.1” or even lower)
Military Tactics: B (Since he’s been mostly involved in battles where it’s not one-on-one, he gets this lol)
Gekkazoku/Gekka Tribe: A (Well, he’s not human so it has to be accounted for, right? This would allow the blood bag shenigans for like healing and awakening I guess. Though, the question is whether normal blood would do anything or it has to be Himemiko blood.)
God of War: A+++ (If it can’t be A+++, then it’ll have to be EX where no numerical value can be assigned. In terms of it working, the skill would probably be where Kenshin’s prescence cause decrease in stats for his enemies and an increase for whoever he considers an ally? Kenshin doesn’t get the bonus himself, but there would probably be a Luck Check between him and everyone else to determine whether the stats go up/down by a whole rank, a +/-, or they remain unaffected. I’m not sure if this skill should do anything else? Because then it’s gonna be a problem of Kenshin being more OP than he should be in comparison to the others. Maybe there’s a secondary Luck check between Kenshin and his opponents on who can strike the other first and gain an advantage throughout the battle? Of course, once someone withdraws, the effect disappears. -shrugs-)
Noble Phantasm – (insert super philosophical, meaningful kanji w/ its romaji here): I Stand in the Moonlit Dawn, Free From Clouds of Attachment (That’s from some translation of his death poem lol. I’m pretty sure someone can name the Noble Phantasm better than I tbh. I do agree it would be something like Alexander’s, but I think it’d be more defensive/support-oriented? Since Kenshin has that no-aggression policy–/bricked. Or maybe if he uses his NP offensively, it’s not as strong as it would be because of the no-aggression?)
        Strength: A
        Endurace: B
        Agility: B
        Mana: E-
        Luck: B-
        Noble Phantasm: A++
Though, most of these ranks I just based off on how other Servants fare on the spectrum. Honestly, Fate AU for Senbura would be best in the FGO setting where there’s multiple Servants and it’s just an adventure to save humanity’s history or something lol (and the perfect excuse to summon the rest of Uesugi). In a standard Holy Grail War with 7 servants only, the worldbuilding gets really iffy. Like is it in Shinga or our world, how magic fits in, etc. There’s also Kenshin having a wish for the Holy Grail and what it would be and lol did poor Yuzuki get dragged into this plot and managed to summon a decent Servant for some reason?

Hello! I’m a newcomer since last night and really like the translations you’re doing here. Is it possible to know how often or when you make updates to the chapters?

Howdy~! Aw, I’m glad you’re enjoying these translations and thank you for dropping a comment! I usually manage an update per day but this week is special because Date got their Ch9 so it’ll probably be a day or two before I start posting again (and 5+ days before I come back to Uesugi).

I’m not sure since the game is still ongoing with updating chapters, but I don’t think I’ve seen a mobage go super dark before… *knocks on wood* so things should be happy. Uesugi’s route is very dramatic but I’ve read up to Ch9 and Kenshin and the heroine have a good relationship!

First of all, thank you so much for translating the Uesugi route–the wait was well worth it! I was only able to drop a reply after so long because of work but I have been keeping up with your posts!

It may just be me overthinking but I think Kenshin is also partly to blame for the rumors spreading in the first place. From what we know so far, the people who live in his territory enjoy a relatively peaceful and possibly even prosperous time under his rule, and the way he is lauded as more of a paragon of justice that had made that possible may have disillusioned a good portion of those people. He is almost an idol of sorts and therefore the people will never blame him nor his generals for any misfortunes that could befall them because in the first place those may be few and far in between (aside from the Takedas’ efforts to attack their territory, etc.). Yuzuki was an exception and also a very easy target considering she’s a foreigner as far as people are concerned whom Kenshin was so kind to take in under his protection. The Takeda attack was a coincidence of course but people would definitely try to force a correlation, moreso after the yakuma incident right in the middle of the castletown with a ton of witnesses. And of course, his vassals being fiercely loyal, I do think it was more of their concern for Kenshin’s well-being and they think they are trying to help by driving out the source of their problems because in their eyes, Kenshin can’t possibly do them wrong and it’s all this girl’s fault. There is reason to the paranoia although it’s a lot of unfortunate circumstances coming together; Yuzuki certainly does not deserve being treated like some sort of curse that was going to lay waste to the land, poor girl…

Kenshin isn’t necessarily a bad leader, but his path of justice has its consequences that he will have to face soon, and I really look forward to seeing if he would come to confront that truth. He’s been my favorite general from the very start (admittedly first due to seiyuu bias and design, but I am still shaking my fists at Senbura for making him such a cool, cultured, and romantic wine-dad with the best son) and I do want to see him grow more and develop as more than just the infallible general of the Uesugi army. And of course, I want to see his and Yuzuki’s relationship develop as well~ From what few potion stories and card stories I read, Kenshin’s surprisingly touchy-feely and has no qualms kissing Yuzuki right in front of his soldiers. |///D

WELCOME BACK!! And don’t worry about dropping replies |D I understand how real life can get in the way, but thank you for this long and thoughtful comment <3!

I've always had mixed feelings about this chapter too because on one hand I'm so touched by the core Uesugi people's willingness to stand by her side but, at the same time, I also feel a little bit angry at Kenshin and like he's partly to blame too. It's a strange feeling and mostly unjustified because he definitely has no intentions of hurting the heroine but, like you said, it kind of comes from his reputation.

Kenshin's personality + principles always puts him in this situation of being between a rock and hard place because 1) logically if she IS bringing calamities then he might need to consider the good of all over the good of one but 2) because she asked for his help he feels duty-bound and obligated to protect her (along with his own personal desires that he's trying to suppress). And then because in general he's a just and noble person, he can't just tell his vassals to shut up and obey him (which I feel like Nobunaga would easily do and why this kind of thing doesn't happen there because Nobunaga would be like "You're questioning /me/? Die" or something) so because he has to consider all their opinions and valid it puts him in this balancing act imo. I mean, ultimately, I do love how he pretty much told that vassal to piss off and think of something more useful instead of gossiping (srsly that was a vicious line in a way that was all Kenshin still being polite) but that they even feel like they can question his judgments is, hmm… though a good leader /should/ consider their vassals' opinions because we can't be the master of everything. URGH, in the end, I just have this instinctive annoyance at Kenshin for this part too when it feels really unjustified LOL. I'm sorry Kenshin.

And TL;DR that was me rambling in a roundabout way to pretty much agree with everything you're saying. Kenshin's not a bad leader and I love these types that manage to remain so kind and noble in a war torn world but still. STILL. this path is definitely a thorny road and you'll get to see many consequences of his principles as well as development in both his character + his relationship with the heroine :'D it's great but also tragic.

Also YES I love Kenshin's card stories because it's always shocking how affectionate he is. I never really expect it given how cool and composed he is hkfjghkjh. I already have plans to translate two of his card stories because I can't resist them |D;; but just waiting for a good spot to pause in the main story when there's more development~ (same with the awakening scenes).

(PS. romantic wine-dad made me choke on air LOL).

I completely agree with all your points there! Especially about Kenshin is both to blame and is technically innocent of all this conflict that’s began to center around Yuzuki’s presence in the Uesugi territory. Like, for the most part I’m also glad that Kenshin manages to uphold his principles even under this much stress from his own subjects and also within himself and still act as the general that he is, but I also understand how watching him can be frustrating www. That part where he told the vassal that they should be focusing on finding ways to prevent yakuma attacks rather than gossip was so savage! I still kind of attribute his vassals’ constant suggestions and questioning his decisions as out of blind faith and like, surely if they point it out to Kenshin-sama he will choose the path for the greater good (which, lbr, a lot of decisions he has made up to this point has been for that very cause)! Well…at least, greater good of the people; in Kenshin’s mind he knows there must be a way to protect his people AND Yuzuki at the same time and he will do everything in his power to do so but as we all know, in a world entrenched in war you can only get so far without getting blood on your hands… Ugh, I have a lot of feelings for these kinds of characters which is both waiting to see if they will still be able to hold on to their ideals when everything soon comes crashing down around them, or watching them suffer the fate those principles led them to (which, off-topic, made me think of my feelings for Fate/ and I just now imagined Yuzuki summoning Kenshin as her Servant, now I’ll have to make this).

I already feel sad thinking about what will happen to the two of them and their relationship but I am hopeful at the same time! And lol if I ever get too sad thinking about them there’s always the card stories to look foward to~ I saw someone describe Kenshin’s love as “heavy” and I do believe it’s an appropriate description, I don’t know why?! For someone who appears like an untouchable figure of justice…he does a lot of touching www.

(LAUGHS credits to a friend who once pointed out to me that Kenshin’s hobbies make him feel like a dad version of a wine-mom with a love for liquor, tending to his garden, and romance novels)

I love these types of characters and stories too where their personal desires are pitted against their ideals and we have to sit on the edge of our seats to see whether they can keep going with both of them or if they have to choose one or the other :”D. Also, omg, Kenshin is totally a saber class–

Ooh, that is a very interesting way to describe Kenshin’s love and I wonder if it’s because you’re not really loving a “single” man (borrowing his words in the next chapter LOL) but also the weight of his responsibilities, or the knowledge that at times he might actually “kill” his own emotions to do something for the greater good. He’s completely willing to erase himself as a person to fulfill some kind of role and I bet that would come across in a relationship… Admirable but in the end I think I want those overbearing “If you aren’t in this world, I don’t need it” types jfghjkgjhhjfh.

LOL I’ve just kinda grown used to ignoring whatever Kanetsugu says :’D although this degree is okay. It’s like Masamune’s words. You have to play the opposite game with them.

I love this part of the chapter. Yuzuki’s dilemma about her being the reason that lured the yakuma and the Uesugi and co. would be on her side whether or not that was true… I mean, if she were me, I’d be trying to get out of there soon too, than cause them any more trouble. still, that’s a careless move. being in another world is one thing, not having any means to protect yourself knowing them yakumas are there, very obviously aiming for you, is another. plus, she’s putting Imari’s life in danger as well. honestly, I’d die within a day if you put me in a place with no internet or modern facilities. I have zero survival knowledge lol

aaaa I can’t wait for the next part~~~ my prince<3

Me too but then again I’d be really scared of dying out in the wilderness to yakuma LOL I also have no survival skills whatsoever. I’m the type of person that feels really bad about causing inconveniences to other people too though so I feel like I’d convince Kagemochi to ship me off somewhere and be like “look, the longer I’m here the more Kenshin’s reputation is gonna take a hit and I thought that was super important to you!! Send me to the Oda arm–” //bricked.
