Chapter 9: The Calm Before the Storm–

Passing through the cave, we arrived at a ruined town. And just when she had a bad premonition, a massive amount of yakuma descended on them.

In the midst of that, Masamune discovered an important clue.

Chapter 9.1

What stretched out in front of our eyes was–

[YUZUKI]: (A town?)

[SHIGEZANE]: “Is that a clue to Himemiko?”

[KOJUUROU]: “Who knows, it could either be the town itself is the clue, or that the clue is somewhere in that town…”

.[SHIGEZANE]: “And where is here exactly.”

[MASAMUNE]: “Looking at all the lined up buildings, it seems this place flourished once.”

[KOJUUROU]: “As far as I can see, the majority appears to be tragically destroyed though.”

[YUZUKI]: “It doesn’t feel like anyone lives here, huh…”

When I casually looked in Imari-kun’s direction after saying that–

His dumbfounded expression leapt into my eyes and I unconsciously tilted my head, curious.

[YUZUKI]: “Imari-kun? What’s wrong?”

[IMARI]: “Ah, no, um… sorry. It’s nothing. I might just be seeing things wrong…”

[YUZUKI]: (… Imari-kun?)

[MASAMUNE]: “Anyway, we took risks to come to this point so, even if we have to search this town corner to corner, we’re going to find a clue.”

Right after that Masamune-san turned his horse towards the town.

[YUZUKI]: “…!”

But, feeling an alarming sign, I instinctively clung to Masamune-san’s body tightly.

Masamune-san noticed that and stopped the horse before turning back to me.

[MASAMUNE]: “What’s wrong? You’re shaking.”

[YUZUKI]: “I-I’m sorry… um… I can’t explain it well but…”

[YUZUKI]: “Masamune-san… I… feel like it’s best not to go close to that town…”

[MASAMUNE]: “……”

Masamune-san thought a little and then looked over at Kojuurou-san.

[MASAMUNE]: “–Kojuurou, stay together with this girl. Shigezane and I will search that town.”

[YUZUKI]: (Huh…!?)

[YUZUKI]: “P-Please wait, Masamune-san! You can’t go, that town–“

[MASAMUNE]: “Don’t worry.”

[MASAMUNE]: “I’ll uncover whatever it is that is scaring you. Wait here for a while.”

And then Masamune-san tried to lower me from his horse– at that moment.

[SHIGEZANE]: “Hey, look at that! This is bad!”

Shigezane-san pointed to the front. When we looked, there was an unbelievable number of yakuma closing in on us.

But Masamune-san was unfazed at all and simply sneered–

[MASAMUNE]: “I see. I don’t know what that town is, but the reason it was destroyed is clear with this.”

[SHIGEZANE]: “This isn’t the time to chat leisurely! Even the three of us can’t take on that many!”

[MASAMUNE]: “That may be true but, without obtaining a clue to Himemiko, we can’t run home with it right under our nose.”

[MASAMUNE]: “So– we’re cutting our way through!”

Masamune-san remained astride his horse and started to cut down the flood of yakuma.

However, the yakuma came one after another, and there was no end no matter how many were cut down.

[KOJUUROU]: “Masamune. It’s impossible to go any further! We can only retreat!”

[MASAMUNE]: “What are you becoming scared about. Until we find a clue, I’m definitely–“

[MASAMUNE]: “… hm?”

Appearing to notice something, Masamune-san muttered something and then–

[MASAMUNE]: “Kojuurou, Shigezane.”

[SHIGEZANE]: “What, Masamune. Did you come up with a plan to get close to the town!?”

[MASAMUNE]: “Change of plans. –We’re running.”

[SHIGEZANE]: “Haah!?”

Masamune-san turned his horse around quickly and began to move away from that place as fast as possible.

[IMARI]: “I-It doesn’t look like the yakuma are chasing us anymore.”

[YUZUKI]: “Mhm, phew…”

[SHIGEZANE]: “Masamune-san, if we’re going to run then we should do that in the first place!”

[MASAMUNE]: “What are you saying. If we don’t find a clue to Himemiko, then there’s no point in having ran these risks.”

[SHIGEZANE]: “Then why’d we suddenly run!”

[MASAMUNE]: “Of course, it’s because I found a clue. –This dropped beside me.”

What Masamune-san took out from his breast pocket was–

[KOJUUROU]: “… A seal case? By looking at its make, it appears to be quite high-quality.”

[MASAMUNE]: “There’s a family crest inside. Unless they were a person in a high position, they wouldn’t be carrying such a fine thing like this.”

[SHIGEZANE]: “Still, where’s it from?”

[KOJUUROU]: “No, wait. This crest… surely not…”

[KOJUUROU]: “… It is the Mouri Army’s crest.”

[YUZUKI]: “Mouri Army? Is that a nearby army?”

[KOJUUROU]: “No, the Mouri Army is even further than Oda territory and Toyotomi territory… They are quite far.”

[KOJUUROU]: “Moreover… since the beginning of these turbulent times, they shouldn’t have left their territory even once.”

[YUZUKI]: “Then why was the Mouri Army’s seal case over there, right?”

[MASAMUNE]: “Who cares about that.”

[MASAMUNE]: “The important thing is that this is in our hands.”

(T/N: I’m reading this for the first time and translating, so for once we’re all on the same page and in the dark. Why can’t I stop being paranoid about the yakuma just being corrupted Gekkazoku? Like the way Masamune picked up the seal case makes it seem like the yakuma, who used to be a Mouri person, dropped it… also, omg, Masamune please don’t frame the Mouri army in Uesugi’s lands with that crest.)

That was sweet of him to try to get rid of the thing that is scaring his “wife”. I like how he has his bravado on full blast just to quickly haul ass once he found a clue to the bewilderment of the crew.

Huh I wonder if they are at the capital ruins and you mentioned somewhere before that the Mouri ultimately decided against going through with attack after Motonari decided to prioritize the children’s future.

SAME and that he didn’t like say anything about her clinging onto him or anything (probably because he’s secretly pleased). Masamune can be so stubborn and crazy at times but I guess that’s what gives him his name |D;; and why Shigezane always calls him “contrary”.

I think they are! Though it’s surprising that these capital ruins are right in Uesugi…? Or connected to Uesugi through a cave?? That seems very close LOL. Hmm I don’t remember the fine details in the Mouri story now but yeah Motonari definitely said that the oni disagreed with Himemiko’s ruling and was going to march onto the capital but then changed their minds. But he did get a reputation – and spread that reputation – of the Mouri army being a devastating and terrifying force on the battlefield so I wonder if they did partially reach and destroy the capital before retreating? Or, hm… maybe they never made it to the capital before it self-destructed with Himemiko’s disappearance and the yakuma. Too many questions still, grah!

    sword
    mirror

      I don’t think the seal case is a relic, actually! Oda has the dagger, Toyotomi has the mirror, and Date has the long sword |D;;
