Chapter 9: The Calm Before the Storm–
Passing through the cave, we arrived at a ruined town. And just when she had a bad premonition, a massive amount of yakuma descended on them.
In the midst of that, Masamune discovered an important clue.
After that, Imari-kun and I prepared for bed and slipped into our futon.
[IMARI]: “Zzz… zzz…”
[YUZUKI]: (I’m glad Imari-kun looks to be sound asleep, but…)
[YUZUKI]: (Hmm, I can’t seem to sleep…)
.[YUZUKI]: (Is it because I’m still feeling the effects of the journey? Or…)
Before I noticed, I remembered when Kojuurou-san treated me and my heart raced again.
[YUZUKI]: (I don’t think I’ll be sleepy like this… I think I’ll take a short walk.)
[YUZUKI]: (It’ll be horrible if I wake Imari-kun so I’ll carefully–…)
I felt a warm feeling when I walked through the castle.
[YUZUKI]: (Uesugi’s castle was huge and grand, but… this one feels much calmer. It feels like I came home…)
[YUZUKI]: (Huh, someone’s sitting on the porch.)
[YUZUKI]: (… Masamune-san? He has a serious look on his face though, maybe he’s thinking about something.)
[YUZUKI]: (It’d be bad to interrupt, so I’ll go back…)
I thought that and quietly tried to leave, but–
[MASAMUNE]: “You don’t have business with me?”
[YUZUKI]: “Huh… Masamune-san, you noticed?”
[MASAMUNE]: “Obviously… To think you run away right after you see my face.”
[YUZUKI]: “Y-You’re mistaken! You looked like you were thinking about things, so I thought I shouldn’t intrude…”
[MASAMUNE]: “Did anyone say that?”
[YUZUKI]: “No, that didn’t happen but…”
[MASAMUNE]: “Then there’s no need for you to leave.”
[YUZUKI]: (Does he mean… it’s okay to stay here? Then is it okay to sit beside him…?)
When I nervously sat beside Masamune-san, a pleasant night breeze blew through.
[YUZUKI]: (Ah… it feels nice…)
Cooled by the refreshing breeze, I felt as though my excited mind was calmed little by little.
When that happened, Masamune-san slowly opened his mouth–
[YUZUKI]: “? What is it?”
[MASAMUNE]: “What were you going to do in the garden.”
[YUZUKI]: “Um… I couldn’t really sleep, so I thought to breathe the night air.”
[YUZUKI]: “Because a lot of things happened this time, and it hasn’t settled for me yet.”
[MASAMUNE]: “Hn. That extent doesn’t count as being a lot. For us, it’s an everyday thing.”
[MASAMUNE]: “Naturally. We still don’t have power yet. If we’re going to try for results above the other armies, we have no choice but to jump into danger.”
Masamune-san smiled sarcastically as he said that.
[MASAMUNE]: “You were also picked up by an insignificant army. If you had been picked up by Uesugi or Sanada then you’d be having lazy and peaceful days.”
[YUZUKI]: “… That’s true. If I hadn’t met everyone in the Date Army then–“
[YUZUKI]: “I’m sure I wouldn’t be spending every day bustling around like this.”
[MASAMUNE]: “… Right?”
Masamune-san had an expression that was sad somewhere.
[YUZUKI]: “… In the end, I’m glad I was picked up by everyone in the Date Army.”
[MASAMUNE]: “… What?”
[YUZUKI]: “Certainly, if I had been picked up by the Uesugi Army or Sanada Army, I might have passed the days in peace.”
[YUZUKI]: “But if I was passing my days peacefully, far away from the fights… then I wouldn’t have met everyone.”
[YUZUKI]: “I’m sure I wouldn’t have become part of everyone like this.”
[YUZUKI]: “Calling myself one of you might be presumptuous though…”
When I said that, Masamune-san stared at me with a serious expression.
[MASAMUNE]: “You are one of us.”
[MASAMUNE]: “… Don’t become arrogant. We don’t have any strength, so we can’t help but rely on a woman who isn’t much help, like you.”
[MASAMUNE]: “… That’s all.”
After he said that Masamune-san humphed and averted his face.
[YUZUKI]: (This is the first time Masamune-san has said I was one of them…)
–The night wind continued to blow without hesitation. As the trees in the garden rustled, I suddenly felt something cover my shoulders.
When I looked, Masamune-san was placing his own jacket on my shoulders–
[MASAMUNE]: “I heard from Kojuurou-san that you might have a fever. Don’t let your body be chilled.”
[YUZUKI]: “Eh… t-thank you.”
Even though Masamune was usually curt, maybe because he was suddenly being gentle, I looked up at him unconsciously but he quickly turned his head away.
[MASAMUNE]: “It’d be irritating if you caught a cold and came to the war council tomorrow. Hurry and sleep.”
[MASAMUNE]: “I’m going to sleep… See you.”
Masamune-san quickly left the garden but–
[YUZUKI]: (Masamune-san’s face was a bit red…)
After that, while I was walking down the hallway, I remembered Masamune-san’s words.
[YUZUKI]: (… I wonder if Masamune-san was in the garden because he couldn’t sleep either?)
[YUZUKI]: (If that was the case, I wonder if I helped him a little…? It’d be nice if that was true…)
The jacket that was lent to me from Masamune-san was still on my shoulders.
Even when we were running around the Sanada territory, and when we were running around the Uesugi territory…
This jacket… Masamune-san’s back was always right in front of my eyes.
I wonder if it’s because it felt like that.
Masamune-san’s smell, which hung on the jacket, made my mind calm somehow–
[YUZUKI]: (I feel like I can sleep now…)
