Chapter 3: Under the Clouds is a Blue Sky

Appointed as Kenshin’s “assistant”, she spent her days managing the internal affairs of the army.

Learning about each other gradually, the distance between her and the commanders gradually shrunk, and the atmosphere in the army also began to change.

Chapter 3.2

After Kenshin-san had requested that Kanetsugu-san and I work together to welcome the delegation…

Kanetsugu-san refused to work with me and, not having a choice, I went to talk to all the vassals alone.

When I asked about acquiring the supplies and preparation of the dishes, everyone said “There’s not enough materials so I want you to buy them”, and so I came to the castle town but–

[YUZUKI]: (H-Heavy…!)

I staggered through the town while carrying a large amount of goods.

[YUZUKI]: (But all of this is needed to prepare our hospitality…)

[YUZUKI]: (I shouldn’t complain and I need to do my best…!)

[KAGEMOCHI]: “Oh my, why are you carrying so many things?”

[YUZUKI]: “Ah, Kagemochi-san! I was asked to buy these…”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “Asked to…?”

Kagemochi-san said that and tilted his head but, seeming to decide this wasn’t the time to think about it, he quickly stretched out a hand towards me.

[KAGEMOCHI]: “Be that as it may, it is hard for you alone to carry so much. Let me help as well.”

[YUZUKI]: “Really? Thank you so much, that helps!”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “It’s nothing. So, who was it that asked for these? There is so much…”

[YUZUKI]: “Actually–“

[KAGEMOCHI]: “I see, to welcome the delegation. You have been entrusted with quite an important duty.”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “To be entrusted with an important job related to diplomacy means Kenshin-sama trusts in you greatly.”

[YUZUKI]: “I-Is that the case…”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “Yes. However, such an important duty–“

[KAGEMOCHI]: “Is it not too much for you alone, when you just arrived in Uesugi?”

[YUZUKI]: “In truth, it was suppose to be done with Kanetsugu-san but…”

When I spoke up to that point, Kagemochi-san nodded slowly, as if having guessed everything.

[KAGEMOCHI]: “Aah, I see…”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “Kanetsugu is not a bad person, however… he rarely wishes to work together with people.”

[YUZUKI]: “Really…”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “Please do not be so depressed. Do not worry, Kanetsugu does not… dislike you per se.”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “Kanetsugu treats others strictly because of his strong sense of responsibility.”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “Thus, please find it in yourself to forgive him.”

[YUZUKI]: “N-No way…! Kagemochi-san, it’s not something for you to apologize for…”

When I replied in a hurry, Kagemochi-san appeared relieved and answered with the simple words, “Thank you”.

[YUZUKI]: “It really saved me trouble with your help in carrying these goods…!”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “Oh no, this was not a problem. If you have any difficulties from now on, you can ask me for help without reservation.”

[YUZUKI]: “Okay, thank you so much! I’ll take my leave now…!”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “Still, there seems to have been a considerable amount of useless goods for welcoming the delegation…”

After I left Kagemochi-san, I went to the vassals to deliver what I bought but–

[YUZUKI]: “Huh? What do you mean you don’t remember asking me to buy these…?”

[VASSAL]: “It means exactly what it means.”

[VASSAL]: “Generally speaking, even if you buy these many things, they’ll just go bad.”

[YUZUKI]: “That’s… I did as I was asked…”

[VASSAL]: “Anyway, return all the things we don’t need, and buy only the things we need again.”

[YUZUKI]: (What…! I wrote down exactly what they asked for and went, so there’s no way I got it wrong…!)

[YUZUKI]: (But… this is task that Kenshin-san finally entrusted to me, so I have to accomplish it no matter what I have to do…)

[YUZUKI]: “I’m sorry… I understand. I’ll buy everything again.”

Feeling depressed, the moment I tried to go out to the town once more…

[VASSAL]: “Did you see her face just now. What a great feeling.”

[VASSAL]: “Truly. Being a suspicious girl who was appointed to an important post by Kenshin-sama, we should waste her efforts as much as possible.”

[YUZUKI]: (Wha…!? So those people made me buy those useless things on purpose?)

Hearing those voices beyond the sliding screen, I immediately wanted to open the sliding screen and argue with the vassals, but…

[YUZUKI]: (… No, all the work will be ruined if I give into my feelings here and get angry. I have to bear with this…)

[KANETSUGU]: “… Hey.”

[YUZUKI]: “Ah, Kanetsugu-san! Where have you been until now–“

[KANETSUGU]: “What did those guys ask you to buy?”

[YUZUKI]: “Huh? Umm…”

As I looked at the paper I wrote myself, I read out the things that were requested in order. Kanetsugu-san listened with an unhappy face.

[KANETSUGU]: “They’re all useless things… I thought this would happen.”

Kanetsugu-san spat that out and then suddenly grabbed my arm–

[KANETSUGU]: “Come.”

[YUZUKI]: “Wha?”

The vassals were startled when Kanetsugu-san slammed open the sliding screen.

[VASSALS]: “K-Kanetsugu-sama!?”

[KANETSUGU]: “You guys. What’s the meaning of buying all these useless things?”

[VASSAL]: “… I do not know what you are talking about.”

[KANETSUGU]: “Don’t act dumb. What’s the meaning of wasting the Uesugi Army’s funds for your stupid harassment?”

[VASSAL]: “T-That is…”

[KANETSUGU]: “Furthermore, if the reception of the delegation doesn’t go well because of this, it would become a diplomatic problem.”

[VASSAL]: “……”

The faces of the vassals paled, probably when they thought about this matter being reported to Kenshin-san.

[VASSAL]: “… We’ll make a correct list immediately…”

[KANETSUGU]: “Enough. I don’t need your hands. You’ll just get in the way.”

Kanetsugu-san cast them off like that and, while still holding my arm, left the room.

[YUZUKI]: “Kanetsugu-san… thank you for helping me.”

[KANETSUGU]: “It’s not like I did that to help you.”

[KANETSUGU]: “It’s just those men are incompetent people whose point of living is to just drag others down.”

[KANETSUGU]: “Never lower your head again to them.”

[YUZUKI]: “Okay, I understand…!”

Kanetsugu-san nodded with a sour look still and then took out a paper from his breast pocket and showed that to me.

[YUZUKI]: “This is…?”

[KANETSUGU]: “It’s a list of the vassals we can trust and the shops near the castle. I was planning to go around alone but… you’re coming with me too.”

[YUZUKI]: (Kanetsugu-san was making preparations to welcome the delegation alone… but…)

[YUZUKI]: “… Kanetsugu-san, why didn’t you say this from the beginning?”

[KANETSUGU]: “I don’t want to work with people who only flap their mouths and abandon things immediately. I thought you were liket hat too so I didn’t say anything but–“

Kanetsugu-san’s expression relaxed just a little as he looked me.

[KANETSUGU]: “You gave it your all to do what you could do. You never gave up, even if the demands were unreasonable.”

[KANETSUGU]: “I can trust someone like that. So…”

[KANETSUGU]: “If it’s with you… we can work together.”

[YUZUKI]: “Kanetsugu-san…!”

At that point, Kanetsugu-san realized he was still holding my arm and released it in a hurry.

[KANETSUGU]: “H-However, don’t get in my way…!”

[YUZUKI]: “Haha, okay!”

This is drama-ish, and hey that wasn’t fair of Kanetsugu to judge Yuzuki as a slacker right off the bat when there were no concrete evidence since he never really gave her a chance to prove herself.

That’s quite something seeing grown men acting petty when they should be on the job nonetheless, a person got more to lose in the situation if they are already deemed incompetent. Apparently there was a list of go to people for important things and events and if they weren’t on the list they just screwed whatever chances they can get at making a good impression on Kenshin.

Hellooooo k-drama, haha. I can actually see Kanetsugu’s point a little bit because I’m the same way. Not to the extent where I’d insult someone right away and throw them off a project, but I’m not that great of a team worker and would prefer to do everything myself because I have micromanaging issues and also a huge sense of responsibility in that the slightest mess up feels like it reflects on me. Team projects in school were always the worst, haha. So it’s much easier to just do it yourself at the very beginning instead of having to go through the growing pains of figuring out how to work with someone. BUT Kanetsugu was definitely harsh about that… and he doesn’t explain anything to her :’)) like if he just told her that some vassals were out to get here then she wouldn’t have been tricked as easily.

The fact that there’s even a list makes me wonder how tight of a ship Kenshin is running here. Although, fair enough, I think it’s mentioned in Date that Uesugi has huge lands? And IIRC maybe Sanada says that too. And Oda and Toyotomi both acknowledge that Uesugi and Takeda are like massive werewolf armies. So I guess it’s inevitable that being such a massive entity means you need to have a lot of people managing everything and thus even if they’re incompetent as long as they’re not corrupt or embezzling or anything then… you don’t have any better options? Still though e_e way to go to show their loyalty to Kenshin but purposefully SABOTAGING a diplomatic mission. And, like you said, lmao grown men…

I think I’m the only one Kanetsugu likes. In the end he defended Yuzuki, but he will never admit it. XD

I resent the behavior of the Vassal, they go around bothering Yuzuki instead of trying to meet her, or trusting in Kenshin’s judgment.
I thought it was a very childish behavior, and even more so because it could backfire … Yuzuki has his place insured, but the Vassal would surely end badly if they ruined everything and Kenshin found out.

Haha, I’m afraid the rest of us have complicated feelings for him :’D I do love how he cut down those vassals with his words for Yuzuki though. GET THEM!!

Right!? My biggest pet peeve whenever I read (or hear) about these people is that… they’re shooting themselves in their own foot in the end. Like why would you want to sabotage the company or place you’re working at just for your petty grudge? If you’re going to bully someone then maybe do it in a way that doesn’t hurt the overall system? Because, like Kanetsugu said, if they mess up this diplomatic event then uhh Kenshin isn’t gonna be happy and if anything came out of it (like a war or something) they’d get involved too so… LOL this wasn’t thought through very well.

Oh this is the chapter where my blood boiled upon hearing the tone of their voices even though I can’t understand and now you translate it, I feel like I want to throw my phone out of the window because of my frustration to those wretched vassals 😤 Masamune is right, there’s some misbehaving vassals in Uesugi.(Umm…. I’m not including Kagemochi here lol)
But at least jerk came to the rescue and lighten the mood 😜

Kick them all out!! Those two vassals clearly provide no use to Uesugi and, if anything, give Kenshin a bad name >:( GRAH! I hated this part of the chapter too and this part was what made me drag my heels at the thought of translating Uesugi, haha, but luckily it all goes up (? or downhill considering your perspective) from here and we get to sail right into Kenshin’s arms– //bricked.

Haha, normally I’m always glaring at Kanetsugu’s mean words but this time I was definitely cheering him on and being like “YES! Tear those vassals a new one!!” hahah.

Okay, I’m starting to think of Kagemochi more kindly here. Mostly because I’m much more annoyed by Kanetsugu currently. Hah.

Kanetsugu’s a jerk, but those vassals are even worse. *sigh*
Well, I suppose things are getting better with Kanetsugu, but… I still don’t like your attitude, Kanetsugu. ಠ_ಠ

Kagemochi is always there to save the day and be super nice, which makes him just seem more shady tbh though. It doesn’t seem like anything fazes him and that makes me suspicious |D. The only way to truly know someone is to know what pushes their buttons and where their limits are! Or if they’re just so clear and focused that you can easily see what kind of person they are a la Kenshin, maybe.

But RIGHT!? Kanetsugu man… I do admit I feel a bit better for him because he only gets nicer… ish the more time goes on, and because I have a bigger person to hate/love LOL Takakage will make you flip chairs over in the Mouri chapters.

THIS IS THE KOREAN DRAMA PART OF UESUGI! I know every army has its bad apples but I’m kinda side-eyeing Kenshin and being like “yo, do you see this?!” hahaha. These guys are pretty much openly sabotaging Uesugi’s diplomatic relationships because they want to haze someone, wtf.

I still can tolerate shady characters (God knows how many shady characters I love), but I definitely don’t like jerkasses.

K-DRAMA PART! LMAO. I lol-ed so hard when I read that. One of the reasons I don’t like watching K-drama (or J-drama or any kind of “drama”) is this stuff. I will hurt my eyes from rolling them too often at these kind of people those dramas always have…
