Chapter 3: Under the Clouds is a Blue Sky

Appointed as Kenshin’s “assistant”, she spent her days managing the internal affairs of the army.

Learning about each other gradually, the distance between her and the commanders gradually shrunk, and the atmosphere in the army also began to change.

Chapter 3.4

[KAGEKATSU]: “… I won’t go as reinforcement for our allies.”

[YUZUKI]: “Huh?”

Kenshin-san’s request for him to go on an expedition as reinforcement so that they could respond immediately in the instance their allies were invaded– Kagekatsu-kun refused.

[KANETSUGU]: “You won’t go… What do you mean by that!”

[KAGEKATSU]: “It’s nothing…”

[KANETSUGU]: “It’s not nothing! You… why… people are worried too…!”

[YUZUKI]: “Kagekatsu-kun, um…!”

Kagekatsu-kun quickly turned around at Kanetsugu-san’s anger and while I was flustered.

[KAGEKATSU]: “… It’s like that so… tell father that I said I won’t go.”

[KANETSUGU]: “Dammit…! What’s with that guy…!”

Lost as to what to do, I ended up going to tell the circumstances to Kenshin-san just like Kagekatsu-kun said.

[KENSHIN]: “Kagekatsu won’t go, you say?”

[YUZUKI]: “… Yes.”

[KENSHIN]: “I see…”

I held a fleeting hope in front of the contemplative Kenshin-san.

[YUZUKI]: (Maybe if it wasn’t coming from me…)

[YUZUKI]: (If Kenshin-san told him directly, then Kagekatsu-kun’s thoughts might change…)

[KENSHIN]: “Then we will dispatch Kageie instead.”

[YUZUKI]: “Huh?”

I unintentionally protested at the answer that betrayed my expectations.

[YUZUKI]: “I’m sure there must be a reason for why Kagekatsu-kun said he wouldn’t go as reinforcement. So…”

[KENSHIN]: “If he has decided not to go to our allies as reinforcement, then that is fine.”

[YUZUKI]: “But…!”

Kenshin-san declared this coldly to stop me when I tried to hang on all the more.

[KENSHIN]: “This conversation is concluded. Convey this matter of being reinforcement to Kageie.”

I left Kenshin-san’s room and, instead of heading to Kageie-san’s room, I went towards Kagekatsu-kun’s room.

[YUZUKI]: (Kenshin-san said that but… I can’t accept it.)

[YUZUKI]: (Even more so because Kagekatsu-kun didn’t say his reason for not going…)

In this situation, I couldn’t do something like asking Kageie-san for this matter of reinforcements.

[YUZUKI]: (… Like I thought, I should try asking Kagekatsu-kun for his reasons.)

[KANETSUGU]: “You! Why aren’t you going!?”

[YUZUKI]: (That’s Kanetsugu-san and… Kagekatsu-kun?)

Both of them were in front of Kagekatsu-kun’s room and seemed to be arguing over something.

[KANETSUGU]: “It’s the best opportunity to show off your abilities, so why would you refuse!”

[KAGEKATSU]: “… You don’t need to know, Kanetsugu.”

[KANETSUGU]: “Hah!? What the fuck’s that!”

[KANETSUGU]: “Say something! Hey, Kagekatsu!”

Kanetsugu-san’s menacing look was so intense that I hurriedly broke in between the two.

[YUZUKI]: “Kanetsugu-san, let’s calm down a little…!”

[KANETSUGU]: “Che, now it’s you, huh! Don’t get in the way!”

[YUZUKI]: “But… uh… um.”

[YUZUKI]: “Ah, that’s right…! I went to talk to Kenshin-san about everything just now…”

Hearing my words, Kanetsugu-san closed his mouth for a moment and then slowly asked.

[KANETSUGU]: “… And? What did Kenshin-sama say?”

[YUZUKI]: “If he won’t go then it’s fine…”

[KANETSUGU]: “… Are you serious.”

At Kanetsugu-san’s face, as he muttered that like he was resigned, Kagekatsu-kun–

[KAGEKATSU]: “… Ah.”

Murmured that in a sigh, like he was sad.

Seeing that, I felt like the true feelings of Kagekatsu-kun, who said he “wouldn’t go”, were sleeping at the bottom of his heart…

[YUZUKI]: “Kagekatsu-kun… won’t you reconsider this again?”

Those words left my mouth on the spur of the moment.

[KAGEKATSU]: “… Why?… If my father has given his permission then there’s no need to reconsider, right?”

[YUZUKI]: “That might be true, but–“

[KAGEKATSU]: “… Go home, both of you… Bye.”

Kagekatsu-kun said that and tried to return to his room, but Kanetsugu-san grabbed his arm and stopped him.

[KANETSUGU]: “Wait. At least tell me your reason. Why won’t you go?”

[KAGEKATSU]: “It’s…”

[KANETSUGU]: “If you have a reason, then say it clearly!”

[KANETSUGU]: “It’s because you’re always silent like this that everyone around you can say whatever they want!”

The words about Kagekatsu-kun always being silent made me feel a strange tug.

[YUZUKI]: (It’s true that Kagekatsu-kun rarely talks about his own feelings…)

The moment I felt that…

I unconsciously overlaid the image of myself, when I first came to “Shinga”, and the image of Kagekatsu-kun who was in front of me with a gloomy expression.

[YUZUKI]: (At that time I was sheltered by the Uesugi Army and only ever protected. I couldn’t do anything and I felt sorry… but I couldn’t say that…)

Could it be that Kagekatsu-kun was also…

[KANETSUGU]: “HEY, Kagekatsu! Say something!”

[KANETSUGU]: “Are you fine with being thought of as the coward who ran away from the expedition like this!?”

[KAGEKATSU]: “…! That’s… fine.”

[KAGEKATSU]: “Anyway, I… won’t go to our allies as reinforcement…!”

Kagekatsu-kun said only that and threw off Kanetsugu-san’s hand before running off to somewhere.

[YUZUKI]: “Kanetsugu-san.”

After I held back Kanetsugu-san, who tried to chase, I asked him a question with an earnest wish.

[YUZUKI]: “Um… could you leave this to me?”

[KANETSUGU]: “Hah? What can you do.”

[YUZUKI]: “I… feel like I understand Kagekatsu-kun’s feelings somewhat.”

[YUZUKI]: “I can’t promise how well it’ll go, but…”

[YUZUKI]: “Can you believe in me and wait for a little bit?”

When I shoved my desperate feelings into these few words, Kanetsugu-san looked at me with deeply skeptical eyes and then–

[KANETSUGU]: “Geez, fine. Do what you want.”

He said that in an exasperated tone along with a sigh.

[YUZUKI]: (… There he is.)

Finding Kagekatsu-kun standing still in the garden, I slowly approached him.

[YUZUKI]: “… Kagekatsu-kun, can I have some of your time?”

[KAGEKATSU]: “Did you come to talk about the things before again?”

[KAGEKATSU]: “… If that’s the case, it’s useless… I won’t talk to you.”

[YUZUKI]: “But I have something I want to talk to you about, Kagekatsu-kun.”

[YUZUKI]: “So… how about it? You don’t have to force yourself to respond, but will you listen?”

And if they could be born Gekkazoku women, but to a lesser extent and would be very rare to see. Surely women would become a reason for war, so they would have to live hidden.

I thought about it, remembering the case of tricolor cats, The cats with that coat color are all females. Only one in 3.000 tricolors will be male. What happens with the Gekkazoku could be something like that, but with men.

@seiggy that happens to me by writing fast.

Then how did the first Gekkazoku appear? Unless Himemiko is a female Gekkazoku and she had at least one son? Then that just brings in the question of Himemiko’s origins.

;~; Poor puppeh and the fact he’s trying to live up to Kenshin’s shadow. Though, I’m also wondering where his mother/Kenshin’s older sister went LOL.

T__T the burden of succession, ahhh. And that’s a good point! It makes me wonder what happened to Kojuurou’s sister too and why we don’t see any female Gekkazokus. Actually, in general I wonder what most of the army/retainers are comprised of. It sounds like only the commanders are Gekkazokus right? And everyone else is just human? But some awakening scenes and things have the guys warning the heroine about how her blood will excite people and it’s kinda like ???? who?? the army people??

Maybe female Gekkazoku don’t have tails/ears or the Gekkazoku are a male-only race—//slapped. Like the way Kagekatsu is in main story makes it look as though he yearns for motherly love or something? Which can be a reason he bonds with Yuzuki quickly because she provides affection (but then again it might be because he was raised strictly…whatever that means from the Uesugi relationship chart? So it’s just a case of feeling lonely since it’s either “Kenshin’s successor needs to be treated with respect/authority” or “my Chichiue and my elders”). Do you remember the Date-centric episode of the anime and how Kojuurou explained Masamune was taken away from his parents at a young age to become a general? Maybe something like that happened (since the anime should be taken as canon to some extent? I’d like to think “putting the dead to rest” is one of the reasons Kenshin plays the biwa besides being a husbando of culture). But still doesn’t really explain where Kagekatsu’s mother went unless she died. Or is she living in seclusion away from the war in case she becomes a target? WHERE IS THE WORLDBUILDING LOL.
Perhaps the guys mean the other Gekkazoku in the army? Because aren’t they mainly made up of human fodder soldiers with vampires/doggos at the top? I dunno, but wasn’t there a thing in a Sanada chapter where the Gekkazoku were created to bring peace to Shinga (because humans were fighting beforehand but then Himemiko suddenly showed up out of nowhere and brought in the Gekkazoku)? Probably remembering that incorrectly. So I think it’s Himemiko at the top, then the OP Gekkazoku(bakufu?bakufuku?), then any humans for servants if that was a thing? Together that was the unified military government and a sort of “emperor” (well “empress” in this case. Actually is Himemiko a title or literally the same person who unified Shinga at first because if it’s the second case how old is she/how long has Shinga been unified under her? Is Himemiko a Gekkazoku herself so her disappearance led to a scarcity of female Gekkazoku?) followed by the Gekkazoku as lol daiymos? Which most likely followed a similar structure of a one authority figure, a secondary group that servers directly under the main person, then human retainers/servants. So after Himemiko poofed (OR TOTALLY BECAME A MONSTER/SEALED AWAY—bricked) and then lol her OP Gekkazoku turned into the yakuma/died, it was just the Gekkazoku-part of the government. Maybe because of war and yakuma the Gekkazoku numbers dwindled?
A little off-topic, but uh…Date Army Drama CD hype?
I saw like two JP stores make a tweet about it lol.

Seiggy I had thought something similar, That the gene of Gekkazoku was typical of men, So they would have to be paired with humans, Provoking that the original strength of his blood was lost. And every time they are less.

@ Hisui Sama: Well if that’s the case, then being a Gekkazoku is a genetic trait? Males will show the trait, but then would females would at best be a carrier? Though wouldn’t a female Gekkazoku be born if a male Gekkazoku and a female carrier had children?

Haha, I see that a lively conversation is happening here |D. I don’t think serious world-building exists in games like these LMAO a shame because how do people write fanfiction then– //bricked.

I agree that I think Kagekatsu feels a sense of motherliness from Yuzuki because she 1) not only treats him like a normal dude/kid her age and 2) she provides unconditional love to him without putting any expectations on him. Not that I’m saying Kenshin’s way of parenting is wrong because in this world Kagekatsu does need to get experience and be prepared to be the successor.

I think you have it right! I totally don’t remember the history lesson given in Sanada but we’re about to see a pretty important one from Uesugi iirc I remember Uesugi’s revealed more about the bakufu which made me hmm and think they were corrupted people LOL. But yeah it was my assumption that the Gekkazoku were almost “created” in a sense from Himemiko who blessed certain people / gave her “divine protection” to them and so the ruled under her and the specific army she favored (her bakufu). So Himemiko is at the top, the Gekkazokus were daimyo, and then regular humans (still don’t know the ratio of Gekkazoku to humans in the army though ;;; because the commanders take men with them to hunt yakuma but the story keeps stressing that humans are useless against yakuma so ??). Meanwhile, the oni decided to full out rebel which is why they split off and made the decision to come back and attack the capital.

I believe Himemiko is a title (definitely not her name) but in the context of everyone talking about her it sounds like there’s only been one. I feel like Himemiko was also another dimension traveler LOL she just appeared much earlier and helped calm the land because she didn’t have anything better to do– ok no but like she was picked up by her bakufu army. And then she disappeared because she found a way home :’D but now another person’s tripped into this world. (Don’t ask me how she blessed her sacred treasures and gave them to the army LOL maybe the heroine will develop stronger powers too–).

No one’s talked about the reproductive rates of vampires or werewolves, haha, the only thing we know is that oni rarely have children and that the purity of their blood is diminishing. But Hisui’s speculation makes sense. For example, if Gekkazoku have rarer births than humans then it’d be like 1/5 children between a Gekkazoku and human is a Gekkazoku (male or female). And then this mixing of the blood makes their children have even fewer chances of giving birth to a Gekkazoku. So now this half-Gekkazoku (though they exhibit full Gekkazoku traits but the purity of their blood is diminished) has a 1/10 chance to have a Gekkazoku child if they take a human lover.

Honestly though, the game makes it sound like there’s random Gekkazoku in the army too that aren’t as important as the commanders. And there’s serving women in the castles so maybe ?? they’re Gekkazoku?? Because none of the guys talk about the females they know like overly protectively? So it sounds like female Gekkazoku just live normally like male Gekkazoku. If females were such a commodity you’d think there’d be some more uhh protectiveness mentioned but like Kojuu’s sister sounds like she was just doing whatever she wanted, haha.

??? PLEASE SNB STOP. Where am I gonna keep all this merchandise T__T but omg that drama CD sounds tempting since it has “sweet scenes” with the guys. Why are you doing this to me SNB, you know I can’t resist Satou.

The more you think about it, the more doubts you have.
Now it came to my mind what would happen if Yuzuki had a son with one of them. XD

        seiggy said:

@Ili lol I wonder if drama cd is just gonna be Date focus. Like how manga focuses on Toyotomi and novel has Uesugi. But if it’s really successful, SNB could totally drag the other clans in, like Uesugi or Toyotomi. I was thinking of inheritance in terms of sex-linked where the gene is found one of the two sex chromosomes, X or Y. If it’s on the X, then the males will always show the trait since there’s not another X to “mask” it.

        Hisui Sama said:
        March 19, 2018 at 15:32

It can be that way if you take it thinking of the chromosomes. If it’s only on the male chromosome (Y), only men would present the features. Then, in that case, women would not be just human.
Well, we can continue talking about this, keep making hypotheses, go through the branches more and more, but while nothing is mentioned in the game, they will remain mere theories.

        seiggy said:
        March 19, 2018 at 16:01

Well, if female Gekkazoku do exist, then the gene can be found on the X chromosome. If it was a human and male Gekkazoku, then all male offspring are Gekkazoku while the females would be carriers of the gene. Then if a female of that pairing had kids with another male Gekkazoku, there would be a 25% chance for a female Gekkazoku. Lol I doubt the game will ever reveal exact details anyway.
