SNB Uesugi ~ Chapter 6.2 ~

Chapter 6: Fury of a Raging Lion

Caught by the Takeda Army together with the sacred treasure, she waited to sound out the situation… but it appeared that Shingen’s objective wasn’t the sacred treasure or the power of her blood, but something else.

In the end, that objective was!?

Chapter 6.2

[KENSHIN]: “Kagemochi, how is the situation.”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “I have released as many spies as we can release inside Takeda’s territory. With this, we will be able to immediately detect if Takeda moves to seize Himemiko.”

[KENSHIN]: “I see. Good work.”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “… Kenshin-sama, are you well? Ever since we left that old castle, your complexion does not seem to be good.”

.[KENSHIN]: “There is no problem. Concentrate on the surveillance of Takeda.”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “… As you say, Kenshin-sama.”

[KENSHIN]: (… It’s about time.)

[KAGEMOCHI]: “Please wait, Kenshin-sama.”

[KENSHIN]: “… Kagemochi.”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “If you are going for a stroll, please have someone accompany you.”

[KENSHIN]: “No, Kagemochi, I…”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “… Currently, no one has noticed your disappearance, Kenshin-sama. Now, please return immediately.”

[KENSHIN]: “I… will not return.”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “Why. Kenshin-sama, you were the one who decided not to go and rescue that girl.”

[KENSHIN]: “Yes. Because I cannot deploy my soldiers for one person alone.”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “And that is why you are going to rescue her alone?”

[KENSHIN]: “……”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “Uesugi needs you, Kenshin-sama.”

[KENSHIN]: “I understand that this is a selfish act.”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “But you will still go, won’t you.”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “… In that case, Kenshin-sama, please allow me to join you as well.”

[KENSHIN]: “! However…”

[KAGEIE]: “If that’s how it’s gonna be, then I’m going too!”

[KENSHIN]: “Kageie…”

[KAGEIE]: “I, Kageie, have been waiting for this moment! C’mon, let’s go save her!”

[KENSHIN]: “Even you…”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “Haha, everyone seems to have the same thought. Then it would be better for us to go together.”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “Besides… Kenshin-sama, you were expecting this to happen at some point, no?”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “That is why you arranged for a sufficient enough surveillance of Takeda and a response to that, even if we are to be absent for a while.”

[KENSHIN]: “… You are correct. However, if something were to happen to all of us, Uesugi will–“

[KAGEMOCHI]: “Then we only need to rescue her and return safely as six people and one animal.”

[KAGEIE]: “That’s right! Please, Kenshin-sama! I beg of you, allow us to join you together!!”

[KENSHIN]: “… Alright. Thank you, Kageie, Kagemochi.”

[KENSHIN]: “Then, about how we are to rescue her…”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “It would be reckless to invade Takeda with just the three of us.”

[KAGEIE]: “Though I wouldn’t mind fighting Takeda’s entire army!”

[KENSHIN]: “No, that will not be the case.”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “Meaning?”

[KENSHIN]: “Because Takeda Shingen… that man’s desire is to fight me.”

[KAGEIE]: “…? But, Kenshin-sama, haven’t you fought with him many times now?”

[KENSHIN]: “Yes. However, Shingen has yet to fight the “real me”.”

[KENSHIN]: “Until now, I have been fighting in order to protect Uesugi. And I try to avoid unnecessary and pointless battles.”

[KENSHIN]: “It is unmistakable that Shingen is displeased with how I fight like that.”

[KENSHIN]: “If you were born as a man, then should you not aim to obtain the world? That is the man called Takeda Shingen.”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “I see…”

[KENSHIN]: “If I were to seriously fight with Shingen then he would not allow his vassals to interrupt.”

After having my restraints removed, I was brought to the prisons.

Meals were properly sent to me but I absolutely refused to touch them.

And then the door opened with a heavy sound. The person who appeared was… Shingen-san.

[SHINGEN]: “What, you haven’t eaten again, huh. You haven’t had anything but water since you came here, haven’t you.”

[SHINGEN]: “At this rate you’ll die.”

[YUZUKI]: “……”

I didn’t answer with anything.

[YUZUKI]: (Shingen-san is using me as bait in order to lure out Kenshin-san.)

[YUZUKI]: (If I’m going to cause more trouble for Kenshin-san, then I should just–)

End my own life. I had already made that resolve.

But–

[SHINGEN]: “… What an admirable woman. It’d be a pity to let you die here.”

Shingen-san said that with amusement and sat down cross-legged in front of the cell.

[SHINGEN]: “Hey, whether Kenshin will come to rescue you or not, I see it as fifty percent.”

[SHINGEN]: “It’s clear that guy thinks you are special. But, still–“

[SHINGEN]: “I don’t know if he’ll do something like expose Uesugi to danger to come and save you.”

[SHINGEN]: “Killing his personal feelings, he devotes himself to being the general of Uesugi. That is the man called Uesugi Kenshin.”

[YUZUKI]: “What are you saying…?”

[SHINGEN]: “If you want to know I’ll tell you.”

Shingen-san smiled boldly–

[SHINGEN]: “Girl. If that guy doesn’t show up like this then… at that time, stay with me.”

[YUZUKI]: “… Is that because you want my power?”

[SHINGEN]: “Nope. It’s because I’m also interested in the person that straight-laced man fell for.”

[YUZUKI]: “……”

I looked back at Shingen-san with cold eyes.

[YUZUKI]: (Even if what Shingen-san says is true, I won’t be led astray. No matter what happens– I’ll believe in Kenshin-san.)

In that moment, pounding footsteps were heard beyond the door.

[TAKEDA VASSAL]: “SHINGEN-SAMA! SHINGEN-SAMA, ARE YOU THERE!?”

[SHINGEN]: “You’re being noisy. What happened.”

[TAKEDA VASSAL]: “Actually–“

Shingen-san shrugged his shoulders, as if exasperated, when the vassal whispered into his ear.

[SHINGEN]: “… Got it. You’re dismissed.”

[TAKEDA VASSAL]: “Yes!”

After he confirmed that the vassal left the prisons, Shingen-san turned an amazed look to me.

[SHINGEN]: “… Girl, it looks like that guy holds you in his thoughts quite a bit.”

[YUZUKI]: “Huh…?”

Shingen-san smiled wryly at me when I tilted my head, not understanding his meaning, and then he took out a key from his breast pocket–

[SHINGEN]: “–Come.”

[YUZUKI]: “… Why?”

[SHINGEN]: “Because my wish has come true.”

[SHINGEN]: “But it’s a bit of a shame when I think about having lost the chance to get you.”

Saying that, Shingen-san’s face had a faint smile–

Shingen-san brought me and his four commanders to a place.

It was a small hill overlooking the old castle I was kidnapped from. What were we doing here…? That question was blown away in an instant.

The reason why was–

[YUZUKI]: “Kenshin-san…! Kageie-san, and Kagemochi-san too…!”

Seeing Kenshin-san, I unconsciously wanted to cry.

But, more than that, I felt deeply apologetic towards him being lured out because of me…

Not knowing what kind of expression I should face Kenshin-san with I looked down, but he spoke to me in his usual tone.

[KENSHIN]: “I will save you immediately. We will return home together.”

[YUZUKI]: “Kenshin-san… Okay!”

However, my sight was soon filled by Shingen-san’s broad back.

[SHINGEN]: “It sounds like you’ve already saved her, Kenshin.”

[KENSHIN]: “She has no involvement in this, release her.”

[SHINGEN]: “Oh, righto. Do you honestly think I’d say that?”

[KENSHIN]: “… I do not.”

[SHINGEN]: “You really do know me well.”

[KENSHIN]: “Even if I did not want to, I have had no choice but to.”

After they said that Kenshin-san and Shingen-san quietly pulled our their swords.

[KENSHIN]: “How dare you involve that girl in this senseless thing.”

[SHINGEN]: “Relax, I won’t mess around with her. You, however–“

[KENSHIN]: “You do not have to tell everyone. If you want to see me being serious, then I will show you.”

[KENSHIN]: “Kageie, Kagemochi, do not involve yourselves.”

[KAGEIE +  KAGEMOCHI]: “Understood.”

Shingen-san also ordered his commanders not to get in their way.

[SHINGEN]: “Alright then, shall we do this, Kenshin.”

[KENSHIN]: “As you wish, Shingen.”

While observing the other, the two of them slowly closed the distance–

Suddenly, the wind blew lightly. Immediately following that, two blades intersected, and a shrill noise reverberated through the area.

(T/N: WHERE TO BEGIN, RIGHT? That bit about Kenshin not wanting to use his army for one person alone, but instead wants to go off alone like a DUMMY! It’s so him but I also want to shake him for it. No matter how well he arranged everything (like a will) for Uesugi to carry on without him, his clan will suffer a giant blow if they lose their general!!

SHINGEN AND KENSHIN BOTH TALKING ABOUT THE OTHER!! *clenches fist* One is all about the lack of personhood while the other is ALL about personhood. It’s so good. Also, if only this game had a system like OZMAFIA where we can hop over to another route mid-way… LOL I’m sorry but I’m such a sucker for those kind of things. Sorry Shingen, you’ll have to wait until it’s your turn.)

Gurlll :0 Needless to say, I’m definitely shocked. On one hand, I’m heart broken over the past chapters, and on another hand, this girl is unhealthily obsessed with being useful to the point of wanting to give up her life;;. Having a bit of trouble trying to reason her character, but ah.. I guess I should sleep some and ponder on this when I wake lol. Too much excitement and suspense and heartbreak from uesugi in one sitting ;; w ;; )) As always, thanks for the chapters~

Oops, went out of order in the comments because I didn’t notice this one. But !! yeah it’s really interesting to see the differences in the heroines of each route (the influence from their surroundings and how the leader of the army she’s in leads?) and I feel like Kenshin accidentaly… kind of generates this fanaticism LOL. Because he’s all about the greater good and a nobler cause so everyone in his army places him on this high pedestal and idolizes his ideals to the point where I think they become unnecessarily harsh on themselves?

Like, for example, if you were around someone who was literally the virgin mary or something and super charitable and nice and just can do no wrong, would you feel an overwhelming pressure? |D;; I would but maybe that’s just me kfjghkfgjh since i’m also the weirdo who feels like I’ll get smited for all my sins the moment I step into a church LOL just… spontaneous combustion. Seriously, maybe that’s just me though.

Ah! You’re not alone xD. I can definitely see myself doing that~ When there are certain types of ppl I hang with, especially! I tend to tone down on my obscenity in terms of word choice and topics when I’m in the presence of someone I regard as innocently precious and ahh~ I shall not sin nor corrupt > 7 > )));;; Definitely there’s a pressure or a sense of responsibility that I happen to hold myself to as well lolol

Goodness, the heroine in this case is really hardcore… Wanting to die to not inconvenience Kenshin… And we should remember that she is just a modern day girl. Just how how much respect does she hold for Kenshin, to get death wishes so easily? Kenshin is a great figure to look up to, but this level of devotion is really something.
Even though I absolutely love Uesugi, in the end I believe that the other armies had a way “healthier” environment for her, um, I don’t remember anyone having a death wish in the other routes? Nobunaga seems more of a save option despite testing the heroine in so many ways.
Kenshin and heroine here sure are a match made in heaven, both struggling so much in their own ways.

    I totally want to see Kenshin and Shingen become friends, sip on their sake and just be good buddies. ;w;

Aside from that, I’m kind of amused:

“[KAGEMOCHI]: “Then we only need to rescue her and return safely as six people and one animal.””

    He didn’t forget Imari! I can’t believe it :”D

The more I re-read these chapters the more I start to think that the relationship between Kenshin and the heroine is balancing on a very thin line LOL it can either be horribly co-dependent (where the two are locked in this growing loop of guilt and responsibility to each other cause Kenshin either fails to save her, feels awful, tries harder, etc and the heroine being saved feels guilty, tries harder, etc etc.) or they can overcome this bit and strengthen their character together. But yeah, the heroine is really hardcore here… but then again the heroine in the manga version was just as hardcore too about saving Hideyoshi LOL. These girls put me to shame :”D cause I’d be like “alrighty, I’ll join you Shingen if Kenshin won’t come–“.

If Shingen could find a much more peaceful way to assuage his whole competitiveness with Kenshin then so many problems would be solved LOL.

That Kagemochi line made me kind of laugh and feel awkward translating because it seems kind of rude to call Imari an animal? Like he sure is a tanuki but he’s a speaking one with feelings… doesn’t that count as a person? But Japanese has specific counters to use for people or animals and they definitely used the animal counter for Imari so ouch, harsh.

[KAGEMOCHI]: “But you will still go, won’t you.”

LOL it looks like Kenshin and Kagemochi temporarily exchanged their position now. It’s pretty entertaining here how Kagemochi’s full-of-pressure questions give a big hit to his lord. Poor general ever..

I agree with you that though he planned everything for Uesugi before leaving to rescue her, it’s still too risky for the army if they losed their general and get huge impact after. I don’t know why but I feel like Kenshin himself is a lil bit confident to bet that he’ll be able to end this situation and get everyone home since he knew Shingen well and would have predicted his movement before coming to fight (and Shingen even said that here either), especially when consider that the two knew each other for such long time as a rival.

Finally I can get over the feelings about these chapters.

I like the title of the chapter here :D

LOL it looks like Kenshin and Kagemochi temporarily exchanged their position now.

i have to agree with you their positions suddenly exchange.

it’s really hard to be a leader because you need to meet the expectation of your subordinates. so in front of everyone, kenshin tells them i’ll prioritize usuegi first. but deep inside of him, he wanted to save her that’s why he decided to rescue her secretly.

@waterinegirl Kegemochi’s way of speaking in these lines made him look line an old butler of the clan, he reminds me of Bruce Wayne’s Alfred in the Dark Knight version lol

Yes, agree with you. He’s suffering too much from these roles and responsibility things. I feel better that the rival in this chapter is Shingen who is more familiar and know each other better than other army generals, not someone like Masamune or Nobunaga otherwise the situ will be the worst. But since it’s just chapter 6, we will be even more pulled into deeper drama in the next few chapters, //cry. I’m really excited to see ‘another side’ of Kenshin now. Please snb team, give me chapter 10!

Honestly, Kagemochi and Kenshin exchanges are SO good because they’re both sort of alike (just in different positions) and they always have implicit meanings under their words so every line is just loaded with intention _(:3/ the part you quoted constantly destroys me. Kagemochi’s small jibe about how Kenshin was the one who made the decision not to save her. And then Kagemochi saying things he knows Kenshin knows (and has probably said to himself) but knows it needs to be said out loud BUT also knowing that Kenshin’s made up his mind and what he truly wants, ahhhh.

I love the chapter title too |D;; and every time I see Kenshin in this chapter I’m just like “oh boy, he’s suuuuuuuper angry.”

I would love to see Kenshin vs Nobunaga because that would truly be a test to see if Kenshin’s ideals can match up to someone ruthless like Nobunaga and with the force and skills to back it up (Masamune is sneaky and brutal but because they’re a small army they’re still limited in their actions ;w;).

Pfft, in the end, Kenshin wanted to go off on his own to save Yuzuki, but Kagemochi’s smarter than that lol. I think it’s obvious now he’s no longer thinking straight. :P
I wonder where Kagekatsu and friends are…. why did Kenshin and friends arrive first…?

I also like how Shingen and Kenshin really understand each other??
Like, they know intimately how each other thinks?? Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately? depending on how you see it) they are at opposite sides of war, or they could be BFF.
Then again, even historically, their relationship is painted so beautifully, so it should not come as a surprise.

[YUZUKI]: (If I’m going to cause more trouble for Kenshin-san, then I should just–)
End my own life. I had already made that resolve.

    THIS PART THOUGH. UGH.
Girl, please. No ending your own life. How do you think Kenshin will react if he finds out??

It hurts so much :’)) seeing how the usual calm and composed Kenshin is just falling apart at the seams now. Also, that line from Kagemochi “… Kenshin-sama, are you well? Ever since we left that old castle, your complexion does not seem to be good” :’)))))

I’m imagining that Kenshin and co. just went in a straight line directly to Shingen or sent a messenger arranging for the dueling spot. Meanwhile, Kagekatsu and co. are taking a meandering wandering and secretive path to try and slip into Takeda’s territory/castle to find Yuzuki?

RIGHT? I love how they both say the “that is the man called [insert the other person’s name]”. I remembered them talking about each other but I missed that poetic parallel of their words. Also lmao as much as I love Shingen I honestly feel like the whole rivalry thing is mostly on Shingen. Kenshin is minding his own business just wanting to live peacefully and defend his territory and then you have this guy who won’t!! stop!! trying to attack you!! like chill dude!!! LOL. And not only do they keep attacking you they keep insisting that you’re not being “true” to yourself like omfg stop.

      Yuzuki’s thoughts sometimes is… :’)))))))) why.

now im confused. did she like yuzuki because of love at first sight or because he is curious why kenshin “fell for her?”

I won’t try to say what people can or cannot read into these things |D but my opinion is that he’s just curious and mildly interested, especially since this chapter really highlights how focused on Kenshin he is. His first plan was to steal the sacred treasure and force Kenshin to come after him, but then he noticed how desperate Kenshin was about MC and so then kept MC instead. It all comes back to Kenshin– Haha, though she does catch his interest when she keeps silent with him threatening to bite her. And then when she’s stubborn enough to let herself starve to death just so she isn’t used against Kenshin.

There’s probably a little to 0 chance they’d do something like that since this is a mobage |D;; we can only follow along wherever they want to take these individual army routes. Yeah, ultimately I’m happy with having whichever army we choose to be the main army for that heroine/route even if crazy things like kidnappings and hostage situations happen |D.

I must have missed that line which Yuzuki was determined to throw her life away than burdening Kenshin, instead of trying to stay alive to wait and hope. and here I thought she’d have shed her reckless side of her already… baby girl why are u like this???

I agree, the way Kenshin planned to leave things to work on their own in case he dies is just… so… Kenshin. made me wonder though, if Kagekatsu didn’t disobey his orders and was back at the castle with the rest, would he ask the son to immediately assume his position regardless what will happen to him?

      Ilinox responded:

On one hand, HO BOY the nerves of steel and guts on this girl compared to the rest (even Oda’s girl isn’t that devoted to Nobunaga; Toyotomi’s girl stood up to Nobunaga but she had the rest of the Toyotomi army beside her). On the other hand, does she really think Kenshin will be happy with that? LOL. If he wasn’t going to rescue her then her being used as bait wouldn’t work. If he was going to rescue her/be lured out by her then once he reaches her to find that she’s offed herself… HOW TRAUMATIZING.

Oh man, that’s a really good question. It seems hypocritical of Kenshin to order everyone back and act like he wasn’t going to mobilize the Uesugi army only to disappear on his own when he prevented Kagekatsu from doing so. So, I don’t think he’d ask Kagekatsu to assume his position but he’d probably set things up secretly in the shadows so that IF he died there’d be a clear change of command, etc. And then Kagekatsu would just wake up one day with someone delivering Kenshin’s will to him or something and being like “surprise!! you’re the new leader!” lmao.

The contrast between Kenshin and Shingen is so good. Admittedly, I find Shingen’s desire to fight the “real” Kenshin sort of funny? Like, lol it almost feels like an obsession.
Kenshin, come on now, you have Kagemochi and Kageie to be a support system! If he keeps thinking he has to shoulder the burden by himself, he’s bound to collapse under that weight, especially since his feelings for Yuzuki are only bound to get stronger at this point :’D. And you’re right with the morale being completely destroyed if Kenshin dies. Not to mention, there’s still Kagekatsu who’s already putting all this pressure on himself, so it’ll only serve to feed into his insecurity.
Though, I’m kinda curious about the guys’ development of feelings. Of course Yuzuki is a nice girl and has an interesting personality, but I sort of wonder if part of that attraction has to do with her blood physically affecting them? They keep mentioning how she smells nice, so is there some kind of pheromone going on LOL.

      Ilinox responded:

Blue and red. Ice and fire. Lack of personhood and all about personhood. The historical rivalry between the two. I honestly wasn’t expecting to get so invested in these two but what a goldmine right here for so much amazing things (I’m surprised there’s less Kenshin/Shingen than I expected with this setup LOL Japanese pixiv people are more fans of inter-army relationships than hate-love rivalries, huh).

I’m laughing at the obsession part because, oh boy, Shingen’s speech in the next chapter. I wanted to kick him there because it was so frustrating to hear but also like “WOAH BOY maybe do not obsess over someone so much??”.

Right?! Like that whole idea of going alone was just so… dumb. But I guess at that point, in Kenshin’s mind, after he fulfilled his duties as a general he literally threw everything out to follow his personal desire. But like imagine the vacuum that’d be left if he died. Uesugi would have to scramble to pull itself together, Kagekatsu would be thrust into being the leader when he isn’t ready AT ALL. In that situation it’d be sink or swim and being forged literally in fire for Kagekatsu. But I can also see Kagemochi running himself into the ground to 1) support Uesugi from the shadows and 2) probably massive guilt complex in having failed to serve Kenshin.

Shh, don’t think of the pessimistic side re: their attraction– //bricked. I think they’re naturally drawn to her because of her blood and her smell (she naturally smells calming IIRC that seems to be the general consensus in all the armies) but their motivation to save her and stuff always seems to come after a character development chapter where they realize how hardworking and genuine she is |D;;.

I always joke to myself that whenever the plot calls for Kenshin and Shingen to interact it’s really a bromance-in-the-making//slapped. Or Shingen is the kouhai who wants to get noticed by his senpai LOL.
Oh man, if Kenshin died there’s also the possibility for Kagemochi committing seppuku unless someone convinced him to live on/Kenshin gave his “final order” to live. Kagemochi could also self-exile himself too. Or just be truly inconsolable even if Yuzuki was there support him.
