Chapter 10: The Arising Tumult and Hope
In order to tie an alliance with Date, the Oda Army proceeded to the area that was once the capital.
She departed with a fleeting hope that she would obtain information about Himemiko, but what awaited her along the way was…
In order to hasten an alliance with Date, the Oda Army went on an expedition.
I explained the details of the expedition, which I learned from Mitsuhide-san, to Imari-kun.
[YUZUKI]: “… And it seems we received information that the Date Army was acting close to what was once the capital…”
[IMARI]: “Wha! Close to the capital!?”
[YUZUKI]: “Y-Yes… what’s wrong? You’re really surprised–“
[YUZUKI]: “Ah, come to think of it… Himemiko-sama used to live in the capital, right?”
[IMARI]: “Yes! If we go to the capital we might be able to find information on Himemiko-sama…”
[IMARI]: “Let’s go with the Oda Army’s expedition!”
[YUZUKI]: “Huh!? B-But, Imari-kun, isn’t it bad if you’re found out by Nobunaga-san and the others…”
[IMARI]: “Don’t worry about that! I have a good idea!”
Several days later, I headed to the expedition’s destination, the direction of the capital, along with Nobunaga-san and Mitsuhide-san.
Riding on Mitsuhide-san’s horse, I was extremely nervous inside.
The reason why was–
[YUZUKI]: (… Imari-kun! Please, stay still…!)
I desperately tried to hide my moving luggage.
[YUZUKI]: (To think Imari-kun’s good idea was to sneak into my luggage…)
[YUZUKI]: (Geez…! You’re not supposed to move! You’ll get noticed by Nobunaga-san and Mitsuhide-san!)
[MITSUHIDE]: “Is something the matter?”
[YUZUKI]: “Huh!? N-No! It’s nothing!”
[MITSUHIDE]: “Is that so… however, your complexion is not very well.”
[MITSUHIDE]: “If you are not feeling well, perhaps it would be better for you to return to Oda territory…”
[YUZUKI]: “I’m r-really okay! I’m healthy, super healthy!”
[MITSUHIDE]: “… That is well then…”
[YUZUKI]: “Sorry for making you worry. I’m the one who said I wanted to come along on this expedition too…”
[YUZUKI]: “But! If something were to happen, my blood might be useful!”
Nobunaga-san remained silent and only continued forward. As usual, I couldn’t tell what he was thinking.
[YUZUKI]: (… But I wonder why Nobunaga-san easily allowed me to join them…)
[YUZUKI]: (It’s Nobunaga-san, so I’m sure he has some plan though…)
[MITSUHIDE]: “However, please do not push yourself too hard. Beyond this point is a land where we must not be unprepared.”
[YUZUKI]: “R-Right… I’m aware it’s dangerous.”
[YUZUKI]: “… That being the case though, is it alright for this expedition to just be you and Nobunaga-san, Mitsuhide-san…”
When I heard it was going to be a harsh expedition, I completely thought that the Oda Army would depart all together.
[YUZUKI]: “If a fight breaks out with the Date Army, wouldn’t it be dangerous…”
[NOBUNAGA]: “There will be no problems.”
Nobunaga-san said only that and then fell silent again.
[MITSUHIDE]: “The purpose this time is not to battle, but only to talk.”
[MITSUHIDE]: “Yes. We need the Date Army’s backing in order to capture the Mouri Army.”
[MITSUHIDE]: “By any means necessary, if the information brought back from our spies is the truth–“
When Nobunaga-san checked him, Mitsuhide-san suddenly realized what he said and closed his mouth.
[MITSUHIDE]: “!!… I apologize sincerely.”
[MITSUHIDE]: “No, it is nothing.”
[MITSUHIDE]: “At any rate, we did not come here to do battle with the Date Army.”
[MITSUHIDE]: “In that case, if we were to bring along many soldiers, would that not bring about false suspicions?”
[YUZUKI]: “That’s true…”
Somehow, it felt like I was given the slip, but the things Mitsuhide-san said might be plausible.
[YUZUKI]: (If it wasn’t just the enemy general heading towards them but also the soldiers they brought, then it’d be natural to raise their guard, huh…)
[YUZUKI]: (That being the case, I guess I can’t do anything but pray that it doesn’t become a fight like this…)
Maybe he sensed that my uneasiness had nowhere to go, and so Mitsuhide-san continued to speak to me.
[MITSUHIDE]: “… Have no worries. In case of an emergency, I will protect you.”
[YUZUKI]: “Um…! T-Thank you, very much…”
Being told in an extremely natural way that I would be protected made me have a complicated state of mind.
[YUZUKI]: (I came for the purpose of searching for a clue to Himemiko-sama, yet…)
[YUZUKI]: (Arranging a place for negotiations, protecting me… I feel like the burden on Mitsuhide-san is too big…)
[MITSUHIDE]: “Date Masamune is an unscrupulous man, so please be as cautious as you can.”
[YUZUKI]: “O-Okay…! I understand!”
[YUZUKI]: (I have to be careful myself so I don’t trouble Mitsuhide-san!)
[YUZUKI]: “But… Date Masamune, what kind of person is he, exactly?”
[MITSUHIDE]: “What do you mean by what kind?”
[YUZUKI]: “Um, his looks, or a characteristic feature. I don’t know him, so I don’t want to mistake him for another.”
[MITSUHIDE]: “… Masamune is of a race called “werewolves” and their characteristic are animal ears on their head.”
[YUZUKI]: “There’s such a distinct difference…”
[MITSUHIDE]: “All of Masamune’s principal vassals are werewolves as well, but Masamune is one-eyed so you will know him immediately if you meet him.”
[NOBUNAGA]: “… In any case, I do not think he would be an opponent you would mistake in the future.”
[YUZUKI]: (Huh…? What does he mean by that?)
It’s been a few days after we left Oda territory. Fortunately, we proceeded to the area of our destination without being attacked by enemies or yakuma.
[YUZUKI]: (Still, even though we’re close to the capital it feels somewhat deserted…)
[YUZUKI]: (It’s nice to get off the horse and stretch my body, but I don’t think I want to stay long here…)
When I looked around the area, I saw Mitsuhide-san and Nobunaga-san talking a slight distance away with solemn looks.
[MITSUHIDE]: “Nobunaga-sama. According to the reports from the advance scouts who have just returned, in this area the Date Army is already…”
[NOBUNAGA]: “… I see.”
Mitsuhide-san seemed a bit dispirited, but Nobunaga-san had an indifferent expression as usual.
[YUZUKI]: (I wonder what happened…)
Unable to enter into Nobunaga-san and Mitsuhide-san’s conversation, I thought to search for clues to Himemiko-sama but–
Even when I looked around, there were only ruined houses in a row, and there was no one.
[YUZUKI]: (I heard that after Himemiko-sama disappeared there was a surge of yakuma and that no one could even get close to the capital, but…)
[YUZUKI]: (Nobunaga-san said there was no way to make a mistake. Is this what he meant…)
[MITSUHIDE]: “It is dangerous to stay too long here, and so it is best we distance ourselves quickly.”
[YUZUKI]: “Eh? Then you mean–“
[???]: “Who is there.”
Suddenly, an unknown man who looked to be a military commander appeared in front of us.
[YUZUKI]: (He has ears on his head…! Could he possibly be… a werewolf!?)
(T/N: I feel like I say this all the time but Shimazaki’s voice is !! SO GOOD!! Much like Kagemochi, Mitsuhide sounds soooo soft when talking to MC and then when he gets scolded or responds to Nobunaga his voice becomes so emotionless and business-like. It’s good. The contrast is very good.)
