Chapter 7: A Malicious Intrigue

Due to a proposal from Masamune, Uesugi allied itself with Date.

And then one day, the commanders of Date suddenly visited Uesugi territory in order to survey the land…

Chapter 7.1

After that, everyone else in the Uesugi Army noticed the dazzingly light emitted from the sacred treasure, and threw out questions one after another.

Maybe he realized everyone was shaken and so Kenshin-san, after calming everyone, gathered everyone in the main hall the following day and set up a place to explain the events leading up to what happened.

[KENSHIN]: “–that concludes our present circumstances.”

.[KAGEMOCHI]: “I see. If the descriptions of those old documents are the truth then at the end of that light– there should be a clue to Himemiko in Date territory.”

[KAGEIE]: “Then we should set out to investigate Date territory right away!”

[KAGEIE]: “Date is a developing force. Both the number of soldiers and battle experience is greater on our side and we’ll win.”

[KANETSUGU]: “I’m in agreement with an investigation. I’ll definitely make them regret pointing a blade to Kenshin-sama before.”

[KAGEKATSU]: “But are we bringing Yuzuki along to an enemy territory where we don’t know when we might be attacked…?”

[KANETSUGU]: “Don’t worry so much. No matter what happens, we’ll protect her from the Date Army. Right, Kagekatsu.”

[KAGEKATSU]: “Kanetsugu…”

[YUZUKI]: “Kanetsugu-san…”

[KANETSUGU]: “W-What, why are you saying something too.”

[YUZUKI]: “No, I just thought it was unusual for you to say you’ll protect me.”

[KANETSUGU]: “Well, it’s because you’re an important key connected to Himemiko.”

[KANETSUGU]: “It won’t be a laughing matter if you stand around like a lump as you always do and get kidnapped by the enemy. So, we can’t do anything but protect you.”

[YUZUKI]: “R-Right. Thank you…”

[KAGEKATSU]: “But… this doesn’t change that it’s dangerous. If you’re scared, you don’t have to force yourself to go, you know?”

[YUZUKI]: “… No. I’ll go too.”

[YUZUKI]: “It’d be a lie if I said I wasn’t scared, but searching for Himemiko-sama is also to return me to my original world.”

[YUZUKI]: “I don’t want to leave it all to everyone. So, I want to go too.”

[KAGEKATSU]: “… I see. Alright.”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “… It appears that everyone’s opinion has been presented.”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “Kenshin-sama. I too think we should set out on an investigation immediately.”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “There is a possibility that the location the sacred treasure’s light points to is not a clue, but Himemiko herself. If that is the case then…”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “Although the probability is low, the Date Army may discover Himemiko by coincidence. We should act first before that occurs.”

[KENSHIN]: “… I understand everyone’s thoughts.”

[KENSHIN]: “But we will set the investigation of Date territory on hold for the moment.”

[KAGEIE]: “Wha… why, Kenshin-sama!”

[KENSHIN]: “Certainly, by means of the Uesugi Army’s force, we are able to enter Date territory and investigate.”

[KENSHIN]: “However, that is nothing other than using military force to invade another army’s lands.”

[KENSHIN]: “No matter how many reasons we have, nonetheless… that would be an aggression. An act contrary to justice.”

[KENSHIN]: “Of course, although it is nothing more than a possibility, I cannot leave the subject of Himemiko alone…”

[KENSHIN]: “Nevertheless, I have made my decision. As a person living righteously, I must not go against my own beliefs.”

At Kenshin-san’s quiet but still unshakable words, no one could speak any more.

[KAGEMOCHI]: “I apologize. The search for a clue to return you to your old world… appears to have been delayed a little.”

[YUZUKI]: “No, it’s fine. I also realized it for the first time when Kenshin-san spoke.”

[YUZUKI]: “Forcibly going on an investigation… no matter how little intention of war we have here, the people of Date territory will see it as an invasion, huh.”

[YUZUKI]: “The clue to going back home has become a little farther, but…”

[YUZUKI]: “Still, it’s much better than thoughtlessly threatening the people of Date territory.”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “It sets me at ease to have you say that.”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “Well, let us wait patiently for the present. Eventually, a plan to investigate for clues without invading them may come to mind–“

[UESUGI ARMY SOLDIER]: “KAGEMOCHI-SAMA!”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “What is the matter for you to be so panicked.”

[UESUGI ARMY SOLDIER]: “I judged that it would be best to inform you about this letter immediately we received just earlier, and so I came to see you!”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “Letter…?”

[KAGEIE]: “What’s with all the noise?”

[KAGEKATSU]: “I heard something about a letter…”

[KANETSUGU]: “Then we should check the contents before showing it to Kenshin-sama, no?”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “You are correct. Then…”

Kagemochi-san opened the letter and, as he looked at it, his face changed into one with shock.

[KAGEMOCHI]: “… This is serious…!”

Saying that, Kagemochi-san displayed the letter.

[KAGEMOCHI]: “He wishes to establish an alliance with the Uesugi Army. The general of the Date Army… Date Masamune.”

(T/N: Knowing what happens in Ch10 makes this chapter give me complicated feelings. Some of you may have seen my explosion on twitter over Uesugi’s Ch10 LOL but now that I’ve had more time to think of it I wonder if the writer(s?) set it up so that Kenshin’s ideal here is actually still in its childish and naive state (and then throughout the story it grows into what we currently saw in Ch10). It’s a high and mighty goal he has to live by his beliefs of justice but, in the first place, justice doesn’t mean pacifism and non-aggression. Sometimes there are things like revolutions for justice.)

[KANETSUGU]: “It won’t be a laughing matter if you stand around like a lump as you always do and get kidnapped by the enemy. So, we can’t do anything but protect you.”

I would be greatly offended if someone told me something like that, unless it was true… WAIT! It was true!!! LOL
Poor Yuzuki. She is at her worst in this route, and being reminded of it may be kind of discouraging for her.

LOL IN ALL FAIRNESS!! No one expected Shingen to do something as absurd as riding a HORSE in a CASTLE and then just charging forward to sweep MC off her feet |D;; I’m not sure how much you could react in that situation other than diving off to the side?? Hahahaha.

With how the writers love to torture Kenshin, she’s gotta be dragged along for the ride :’D poor girl.

Kinda out of topic, but since you mention it in your note, I’ll say it.

Ch 10… It’s emotional for me, since Kenshin say things like that to MC, but yeah… I can’t really understand what she’s talking about after meet Himemiko, I’m already use Google Translate (even the result kinda suck but still can get the point), and yeah I still can’t understand it lol

Okay back to the topic… Yeah, that tsundere Kanetsugu, just be honest to MC lololol (in my opinion, even I’m not really like him)

As always, thank you for your hard works~

Ch10 was a roller coaster of emotions for me too. I was on Kenshin’s side though so while I understood where everyone else was coming I was also shaking them and being like “NO!! NO THIS IS INSUBORDINATION AND TREASON!!” fgjhkfgjhgfj when Kenshin explains himself though :'(( poor dude continues to get dragged through hell in his route.

I’m so curious about everyone’s reactions to Takakage after seeing how many dislike Kanetsugu LMAO and then seeing what you guys think about Kanetsugu afterwards–

<33 thank you for commenting as always

I agree with you on justice revolution. That’s what I wish to see forever too.

I just sigh when reading this chapter, my feelings mixed with anger, frustration, and a lil bit disappointment. Like I said earlier, I always get a little annoy when seeing him keeps talking about his beliefs although it is one of other reasons that saved MC. Sometimes I got mad at him and some other times I got frustrated on MC lol. Reading Uesugi chapters is too emotional.

I keep wondering where he draws the line because, if he fights for justice, then does that mean he’d okay an invasion into a territory if it was ruled by a corrupt lord who tortures their citizens? Like the just thing to do in that case would be to liberate the territory, right? Or would he say that’s an act of aggression and they shouldn’t put their noses into another territory’s business? KENSHIN!!

Ahaha, same same. Kenshin makes me feel annoyed but also like a bad person because I’m so pragmatic and ruthless and he’s like a saint in comparison. BUT it is because he is who he is that everyone follows him and looks up to him and that he and MC had their meeting. Uesugi is a roller coaster |D.

[YUZUKI]: “No, I just thought it was unusual for you to say you’ll protect me.”

im surprised by Kanetsugu. knowing you hated me. WAIT… i think im the one who hated you. especially remembering that awakening. i hope there are good stories about you in your interactions and card stories.

[KENSHIN]: “No matter how many reasons we have, nonetheless… that would be an aggression. An act contrary to justice.”

i hope you can stay true to yourself for the coming chapters.

i hope yuzuki wont do anything more stupid. ( i doubt. she will still do stupid things)

Ahaha, Kanetsugu is just reaaaaaaally tsun :’D he doesn’t hate her!! He just can’t admit that she’s under his skin and he cares about her as a person. He has some pretty good card stories (the one from the latest event with Musashi) but I’m afraid I won’t be translating that one for a while since it’s linked with the event.

Kenshin’s ideals and the thorny road~ that’s what Uesugi’s main story should be called. She’s a bit better in this arc but that’s because their opponents are BRUTAL :’)).

[KANETSUGU]: “Don’t worry so much. No matter what happens, we’ll protect her from the Date Army. Right, Kagekatsu.”
    [KAGEKATSU]: “Kanetsugu…”
    [YUZUKI]: “Kanetsugu-san…”

I somehow can imagine both Kagekatsu and Yuzuki staring at Kanetsugu with the same soft look… XD

I agree with what you said in your note. I cringed when Kenshin brings up his beliefs there; it really shuts down all discussions. Even if someone doesn’t agree with it, it’s not like they can just say “I don’t agree with your beliefs”, especially to a superior… That will bring about a whole different set of issues. (.`・﹏・´.)

HAHA you have a much different mental image than I did which was both of them with their jaws dropped and being like “omg Kanetsugu… did you actually say something nice!?” hahaha he sounds so offended when he’s like “what’re you staring at!” to MC.

I love how we all have such complicated feelings for Kenshin’s ideals. They’re great. He’s a really admirable man. But… sometimes… you just wanna shake him and be like “HULLO? HOW CAN YOU PROTECT YOUR PEOPLE IF YOU JUST TURTLE”. All his vassals brought up such good points too >< but still Kenshin isn't naive because he's fully aware that they can't sit around with Himemiko out there. Yet he's still so stubborn about his ideals, urk.

You bring up a really good point about how Kenshin's words shut down all discussions though. I guess in the end he IS the general too and like… if you don't like how he runs this army then why are you following him / you're free to leave, huh :'D.
