Chapter 7: A Malicious Intrigue
Due to a proposal from Masamune, Uesugi allied itself with Date.
And then one day, the commanders of Date suddenly visited Uesugi territory in order to survey the land…
Just when the investigation of Date territory was put on hold, that army’s general– Date Masamune sent a letter saying he wished to form an alliance.
We gathered again in the main hall to talk on what we should do about that proposal.
[KAGEMOCHI]: “Presently, Date territory is being threatened by the Takeda Army, and so they would like to request the Uesugi Army’s assistance by all means.”
.[KAGEIE]: “We can’t trust them! Date Masamune is a guy who attacked Kenshin-sama before in a cowardly way.”
[KAGEIE]: “And now they’re begging for help. There are limits even to selfishness, you know!”
[KANETSUGU]: “No, I believe we should accept this alliance.”
[KANETSUGU]: “If Date territory wants to ally with us to protect themselves from the Takeda Army, then it would be necessary for us to grasp the lay of the lands on their side. In other words, we can search for clues to Himemiko in Date territory.”
[KANETSUGU]: “More importantly, this is an alliance the other side proposed. We’ll be able to investigate with just reasons, and it won’t be an invasion.”
[YUZUKI]: (Certainly, if that’s the case, then it won’t go against Kenshin-san’s justice. There’s no reason to refuse, right?)
Kenshin-san eventually raised his head from the letter–
[KENSHIN]: “We cannot abandon those who seek aid. I will accept this alliance.”
Kenshin-san had everyone exit the room, but when it became the two of us he called out to stop me and said this.
[KENSHIN]: “It is probable that this alliance… Date Masamune’s true target is something else.”
[KENSHIN]: “Before, when I was cut by Date Masamune, I drank your blood and drove him away.”
[KENSHIN]: “At that time, there is more than enough of a possibility that he noticed the power resting in your blood.”
[KENSHIN]: “His target may be you. Be sure not to relax your attention. That is all.”
[YUZUKI]: “… I understand. I will excuse myself now.”
[KENSHIN]: “The measures I can use in order to protect her– is it this sacred treasure.”
Several days after the letter was sent. I was passing the time in my room when Kageie-san visited and said he would guard me, but…
[KAGEIE]: “Listen, okay? Until the Date Army goes home, you can’t leave this room!”
[YUZUKI]: (By that, doesn’t it mean… if the Date Army doesn’t arrive until way later, I’ll be shut up in this room for that whole time…)
[KAGEIE]: “Don’t look so uneasy! Date isn’t worth being afraid of, because no matter what happens I’ll protect you!”
[YUZUKI]: “I’m grateful for those feelings but…”
[KAGEIE]: “What? If you’re concerned then you can say anything! Kenshin-sama asked me to keep an eye on you… so I’ll be in trouble if there’s an oversight!”
[YUZUKI]: (Then Kenshin-san, in order to protect me, called out to Kageie-san?)
When I thought about how this was Kenshin-san and Kageie-san’s consideration, I felt something like relief.
[KAGEIE]: “… Hrm? You’re smiling, aren’t you. Then there’s no need to worry, huh. Let’s get on with starting your guard then!”
[YUZUKI]: “Okay, thank you!”
That being said, while Kageie-san was always beside me, he stood watch outside.
[YUZUKI]: “Um, Kageie-san, Date’s people haven’t arrived yet, right? Isn’t it a bit early to start guarding me now…”
[KAGEIE]: “Are you not conscious at all of how you might be personally targeted? Have more of a sense of danger!”
I flinched at Kageie-san’s forceful voice.
[YUZUKI]: (I want to say he’s overdoing it but, on second thought, this is all for my sake, huh.)
[YUZUKI]: (And yet I haven’t been thinking about Kageie-san’s feelings…)
[YUZUKI]: “I’m sorry… You’re right, Kageie-san.”
[KAGEIE]: “Ah, no, uh… That there was, uhm.”
[KAGEIE]: “Er… in the worst case if you were to be kidnapped by the Date Army, I’d hate it if you were gone!”
[KAGEIE]: “Ah!? Right now, that was just a figure of speech… how do I say this, it’s because you’re necessary to Uesugi so…”
[KAGEIE]: “No, I’m not talking about the power of your blood though, alright? I meant you yourself… Aagh, I can’t say it well!”
[KAGEIE]: “I’m going to the toilet! Don’t leave this room just because I’m gone!”
[YUZUKI]: (What’s going on with Kageie-san?)
[KAGEIE]: “I’M A SERIOUSLY USELESS MAN!”
[KAGEMOCHI]: “… What is this all of a sudden.”
[KAGEIE]: “I was ordered to be her bodyguard and I’ll absolutely protect her but, above that, I want to make her happy somehow.”
[KAGEIE]: “Yet when I’m in front of her in the moment I say unexpected things…”
[KAGEMOCHI]: “In other words, you aren’t able to be honest.”
[KAGEMOCHI]: “Then perhaps you should only say what you wish to say the most?”
[KAGEIE]: “I see! I got it. I owe you one!”
[KAGEMOCHI]: “Good gracious. I would like you to hurry up and learn how to deal with these things yourself though.”
[YUZUKI]: “Ah, Kageie-san, welcome back.”
[KAGEIE]: “Yeah… Um, I have something I want to say to you. Sorry about before.”
[KAGEIE]: “I want to protect you. It has nothing to do with the power of your blood.”
[KAGEIE]: “So… please let me be your bodyguard. Can’t I?”
[YUZUKI]: “That’s… of course you can. I’ll be relying on you, Kageie-san.”
For some reason Kageie-san ‘s face became red at my words and then–
[KAGEIE]: “… Then I’ll be guarding you from outside the room!”
Saying that, he quickly left my room.
