SNB Uesugi ~ Chapter 7.5 ~

Chapter 7: A Malicious Intrigue

Due to a proposal from Masamune, Uesugi allied itself with Date.

And then one day, the commanders of Date suddenly visited Uesugi territory in order to survey the land…

Chapter 7.5

Imari-kun tried to help me as I was about to be kidnapped but he didn’t know what to do…

I quietly walked through the silent corridors while the person who invaded the castle pressed a short sword against me from behind.

Still, I thought that someone would notice if I sought help without giving up, and so I tried twist my body around but…

[???]: “Would you please stay quiet and obedient. If not, I will have no choice but to be rough.”

… If I didn’t do as he said, I would experience something horrible. Even though I knew that.

[YUZUKI]: (I have to do something…!)

[YUZUKI]: (Even if I can’t raise my voice, or move my body as I wish, there must be another way.)

Just then, I heard a metallic noise from behind. Not knowing who it was, the moment my body stiffened–

[???]: “Stop…!”

[YUZUKI]: (! That voice just now…!)

[KAGEKATSU]: “You were together with Date Masamune… Katakura Kojuurou, correct?”

[KOJUUROU]: “Uesugi’s next in line, hm. You’ve left yourself vulnerable without bringing guards.”

[KOJUUROU]: “I’m afraid I do not have time to talk with you though.”

[KAGEKATSU]: “Talk? I don’t have any intentions of doing that either. –I’ll have you return that girl!”

[KOJUUROU]: “Is it fine to try and attack me blindly? If you make a mistake, you will cut this woman.”

[KAGEKATSU]: “…!”

Hearing Kojuurou-san’s words, Kagekatsu-kun’s movements hesitated for an instant.

Kojuurou-san made a large swing with his sword, seizing the opportunity he made–

Right after that, blood splashed out from around the area of Kagekatsu-kun’s chest, which had been torn open.

[YUZUKI]: “Kagekatsu… -kun?”

Clang! Making this noise, Kagekatsu-kun’s sword fell to the ground.

At the same time, for some reason, Kojuurou-san loosened his arm around my body.

My mind was filled more with Kagekatsu-kun than finding the reason for that and I ran over to Kagekatsu-kun’s side immediately.

[YUZUKI]: “Kagekatsu-kun!”

[KAGEKATSU]: “Kugh… hagh, agh…!”

[YUZUKI]: (This needs to be treated right away…)

I made up my mind and held out my index finger.

[YUZUKI]: “Kagekatsu-kun, drink my blood.”

[KAGEKATSU]: “N… o.”

[KAGEKATSU]: “You are a precious person my father decided to protect… so I don’t want you to be hurt because of me…”

[KAGEKATSU]: “Besides, if I drink your blood in front of him, your power will be known…”

[YUZUKI]: “But I don’t want to just watch you be in pain, Kagekatsu-kun. Over my power being known, I’d rather…”

[YUZUKI]: “So please, drink my blood.”

[KAGEKATSU]: “……”

Kagekatsu-kun stared intently at my finger as if he was at a loss but…

[KAGEKATSU]: “… I’m sorry.”

[KAGEKATSU]: “…… ngh.”

After whispering that like a murmur, Kagekatsu-kun swallowed my finger in his mouth and pierced me with his fangs.

[YUZUKI]: “Nn…”

At first Kagekatsu-kun drank my blood reservedly, but gradually he started to devour it greedily as if he forgot himself.

As he did so, the injury on his chest healed before my eyes–

[KAGEKATSU]: “… I’m… alright, now.”

The awakened Kagekatsu-kun smiled and then slowly stood up.

[YUZUKI]: (I’m glad…)

Although I was relieved for the moment, I couldn’t say the situation was good.

[KOJUUROU]: “… I am convinced now. Indeed, there is a strange power in that girl’s blood. Exactly as Masamune said.”

[KOJUUROU]: “That being the case, one could say it was a mistake for you to prioritize your own life and drink her blood in front of the enemy. Uesugi Kagekatsu.”

[KAGEKATSU]: “It wasn’t a mistake.”

[KAGEKATSU]: “Because if I were to die… then who would… protect this girl here…!?”

[KOJUUROU]: “Gugh, what strength…”

[KOJUUROU]: “His power and swordsmanship are completely different from before…! Is this also due to having drank that girl’s blood…!”

[KOJUUROU]: “There is no doubt then, that we must obtain that girl for the Date Army at all cost……!”

[KAGEKATSU]: “I’ll never… hand her over…!”

Kagekatsu-kun said that and raised his sword overhead powerfully. At that moment.

[???]: “An inexperienced next-in-line general, brought up under a far too superior father. And so you must always be searching for opportunities to show off your own power.”

[???]: “That is precisely why at this time, eager for success, you’ve concentrated on the enemy in front of you.”

[YUZUKI]: “!?”

The moment I looked back to see the owner of that voice, an impact was made to my neck. And then, my consciousness became distant.

[MASAMUNE]: “The Date Army will be taking this girl… It’s nothing personal.”

(T/N: Seriously, this chapter made me yell so hard. WHERE TO EVEN START. Let me tell you guys a story. Okay, whenever I get invested and analyze characters I instinctively play this game called “How would I break this character” because I live my life by this quote from Dune, “To know a thing well, know its limits; Only when pushed beyond its tolerance will its true nature be seen.” If you know what makes a person snap in anger or despair then you’ll know their bottom line, etc etc.

So, before this chapter even came out, I already thought “Kagekatsu is Uesugi’s weakest link. He’s a walking complex of issues! If I were to break him I’d put him in a hard spot where he can only make a choice between worse or worser. Then when he’s feeling shitty over his decision, I’d rub his inexperience in his face, compare him to Kenshin (an absolute must because inferiority complex!!), and then finish off his self-esteem by making him FAIL his goal. Granted, there’s a small chance that characters who go through absolute hell like this rise from the ashes into a powerhouse but shhhh that’s a risk you’ll have to take.

AND THEN!! THIS CHAPTER COMES OUT!! And I realize Masamune and I are soulmates L O L. Kagekatsu was forced into making a hard decision, aka. to drink or not to drink the heroine’s blood (either die or reveal her powers), check! His inexperience was rubbed in his face by Kojuurou and Masamune, check!! Masamune compared him to his much more superior father, check!!! Kagekatsu fails to protect the heroine and she gets kidnapped, check!!!! They leave him alive so he can dwell in his failures and self-destruct, CHECK CHECK CHECK BINGO!!!!!

Anyway that’s why I always laugh hysterically at the quiz placing me with Uesugi because I’d be eaten up with guilt by how despicable my thoughts are beside Mr. Justice Man Kenshin. He’d be like “we must help these poor people” and I’d be like “yo I came up with this great idea to spread the plague to our enemies” LOL. PS. SORRY FOR THIS HUGE  WALL)

I took a while to write the comment lmao I just couldn’t decide where to start since this one is absolutely painful and heartbreaking. Your character breakdown and analysis is right. My feeling for Kagekatsu is quite complicated as he’s obviously having low self-esteem and confidence but he’s also stubborn at the same time. When I started to get annoyed by what he’s thinking and being stubborn to do things on his own way though it’s risky or etc. that causes conflict to the rest of the party, and I sometimes even felt sorry for Kanesugu that he has to deal with this emo boy(´;ω;`), then my feelings are ended up with feeling pity or sorry for him like when you see a puppy gets hurt ;( but yeah a little part somewhere in my mind is glad to see him gets bad ending/result from what he did, he deserves it and should get to learn from it. However, I have no mercy for what Masamune did here. Having dirty plans and trick your enemy is understandable but hurting or killing innocent citizens are just too much. I know they don’t care about their image and are absolutely ruthless but smart guys like you don’t even have other plans to distract Uesugi and kidnap that girl without dragging innocent people on fire?(´;ω;`)

//pats you. Sometimes I get annoyed at his thoughts too but then Kagekatsu always ends up presenting a good point that makes me go “WELL, I guess!!”, haha. I give myself enough pressure too so I can’t imagine how it feels being constantly compared to your parental figure and knowing (or feeling) like everyone is expecting you to fill his shoes.

I get a little impatient with how Kagekatsu is growing up but I do think the atmosphere in Uesugi is the best for him. Maaaaaybe if Kenshin was just a bit warmer (there needs to be someone to give Kagekatsu unconditional support and reassurance and listen to him let out his worries and fears without judgment) then it’d be best. You have to admit that sometimes Kenshin’s “hands off” attitude to parenting is way too hands off.

_(:3/ YEAH I SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS. I mean ultimately the villagers’ loyalty to Kenshin makes them hostile enemies as well, so they’re not truly harmless. But still… setting a village on fire as distraction is harsh /o\.

There are these three, those of the army date never do anything without reason. Kojuurou released her to know if the power of his blood was true. All were manipulated, there Masamune you are very bad and ruthless.

When Kojuurou mentioned on his route that, since Yuzuki arrived, the atmosphere had improved and it was not so brutal, I had not imagined that the change was too much, I really preferred them on his route.

It made me want to stab Masamune really you are very bad, first you ask for an alliance to be able to enter the territory, then you set fire to the poor civilian village and now you put your finger in the sore to Kagekatsu.

Yuzuki on the Uesugi route has the Athena syndrome (the one in Saint Seiya) and they kidnapped her again

I absolutely loved that subtlety where Kojuurou releases her and the heroine notices that but she doesn’t have time to think about it. As the audience you’re kind of like “Oh no… it can’t be that he’s…” and then when you realize he was confirming her blood powers… :’)) EVERYTHING WAS PLANNED!

Right?! I didn’t expect Date to be so brutal too and thought it was just lip service like they usually do in otome games. “I was so bad and terrible before I met you but now I’m changed” and you’re just supposed to imagine the possible things they could have done or just accept that they did do “terrible” things. But actually seeing it… and especially against other people you care about (in this example, Uesugi army) is just brutal and amazing.

Haha, I guess it’s the best way to break Kenshin |D by making it so he can never protect the person he wants to protect the most. Especially when his core principle is the strong protecting the weak, oops.

    Anyway… Now I feel depressed… =,(

It’s a fun (?) mental game to play, ahaha, since you have to have a good grasp of their character to come up with a countermeasure for them. I can think of something to maybe use against everyone but Nobunaga and Motonari. I still can’t get Motonari’s character and Nobunaga is just too godly in SNB. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him be surprised? And like if you piss him off he doesn’t make mistakes, he just comes and gets revenge x100 on you LOL.

:’)) Uesugi’s route is a roller coaster of emotions.

Waw, that’s a long one. But, somehow I agree with that…

Okay, Kagekatsu, don’t mind what others said~! And Masamune, please don’t be like that, remember in your own route you fall to MC (mwahahahaha *cough cough*)

As always, thank you for your hard work~! ^^

Ehehe ////// I couldn’t resist talking about this chapter because I was yelling so much when I first read it since I felt like the writers + Masamune just plucked my thoughts straight out and put it down. I also wasn’t expecting them to go so hard to rip Kagekatsu to shreds. Oh gosh, especially with the Date army when they’re one of the armies the player can join.

It hurts to hear these guys be so cold when they’re in enemy armies this time :’)) they don’t know how much the heroine changed them in their own route sOBS.

      Thank you for commenting <3!

i feel bad for Kagekatsu, for being compared to kenshin. but i cant blame them. the difference between Kagekatsu and kenshin is so great. i wonder how kenshin raise Kagekatsu.

[KOJUUROU]: “Is it fine to try and attack me blindly? If you make a mistake, you will cut this woman.”

seriously Kagekatsu, you appeared without a plan

[MASAMUNE]: “The Date Army will be taking this girl… It’s nothing personal.”

Ahem… but in you’re own route, you fall for her

yuzuki, why is it you’re playing again as princess in distress part 2

      Ilinox responded:

Same same, about feeling bad for Kagekatsu. I’m sure the comparisons are inevitable since 1) they’re related and 2) Kagekatsu is the heir while Kenshin is the current general, but sometimes I wish everyone would just chill and maybe not say it out loud because that certainly doesn’t help Kagekatsu’s self-esteem!!

There’s also a part of me that still feels like everyone in Uesugi idolizes Kenshin a bit too much. He’s just as human as they are and fallible *coughs chapter 10 coughs*.

Ahaha, this time it’s totally not her fault! I’m moving the blame to Kenshin– jk jk. I really think Date came up with a really sneaky and unexpected plan this time. And unlike with Shingen where I felt like you could quickly come to realize that he didn’t mean the heroine harm, it’s a bit harder with the Date army. I wouldn’t put it past Masamune to be contrary and straight up kill her if she resists too much.

I’ve always wondered why you kept asking yourself why the character quiz gave you Uesugi (I suppose I /could/ see you’re an Uesugi sometimes, can’t elaborate on how tho). and now I do.

I agree with your breakdown on how to break a character. Kagekatsu is the weakest link, plus he didn’t have a good self-esteem. He BELIEVES himself to be the weakest. How the Dates just rub them in his face was painful, moreso bc Kagekatsu is basically my fictional son, but it was a goddamn good move. The distraction fire, the herding out all the Uesugi big shots from the castle and knowing Kagekatsu prolly will not leave Yuzuki alone… Masamune, you are very scary here compared in your own route.

as much as I like Date clan the least, I agree with their choice of ruthless methods and why they need to go so hard. a bummer now the supposed alliance of Date with Oda not yet concluded. I kinda hope they won’t materialized and ended in a battle. Instead of the ‘ol Toyotomi vs. Oda rivalry, I’d love to see Merciless Masamune vs. Demon Lord Nobunaga (that’s prolly soften up a lil bit by Yuzuki’s presence). I wonder if even THE Nobunaga would be thwarted by Masamune’s tricks, and would that hurt Nobunaga’s pride.

      Ilinox responded:
      May 5, 2018 at 00:22

Ahaha, I mean ultimately I do have principles that I wouldn’t cross. It’s very easy for me to come up with horribly ruthless plans but carrying it out may be another matter since I’d have second thoughts about harming bystanders who are just trying to live their civilian lives (though I might convince myself that there’s a potential for them to become filled with vengeance and come after me so might as well wipe them out–). But, who knows, maybe I match with Uesugi because they temper my ruthlessness and I can join Kagemochi in doing dirty work from the shadows for Kenshin–.

HAHA RIGHT? Like because we’re with Uesugi I am a bit angry at Masamune because it feels like he kicked Kagekatsu while he was down, but the other side of me is clapping my hands being like “Darn, you know where to hit him where it hurts. Good job, my dude!!” All of it was just magnificently planned.

SAME. I’ve been looking forward to a Oda and Date confrontation for what feels like forever lmao. I wanna know who’d win in a battle of ruthless schemes! Especially since Hideyoshi is supposed to be pretty cunning too but he seems to get tripping up by Nobunaga in his own route a lot. I guess he did get one over Nobunaga, sort of, during Oda’s route…

Is it just me, or is it often Kagekatsu that comes to Yuzuki’s rescue…?
    (Kenshin is perhaps too busy?)

[???]: “An inexperienced next-in-line general, brought up under a far too superior father. And so you must always be searching for opportunities to show off your own power.”

Okay, now Masamune, that’s not nice.
Though I have to disagree with saying that Kenshin is far too superior… For all I know, he has too many weaknesses. Kagekatsu maybe an obvious walking complex of issues, but Kenshin is a hidden one, and thus, a more problematic one. Kenshin may be stronger physically, but once one knows the chink in his mental armor, it is very easy to make him break.

[MASAMUNE]: “The Date Army will be taking this girl… It’s nothing personal.”

Oooooh boy. Nothing personal you say, but it will be. It will be.
(Well, Yuzuki is taken away again. Poor Kenshin can’t catch a break.)

      Ilinox responded:

      I think it’s pretty evenly spread between them, hmm. Or maybe it’s more like Kagekatsu fails and then Kenshin has to clean up? LOL. So there was the Takeda incident at the very beginning (that struck a blow at Kagekatsu’s confidence). Then Kenshin went to save her from Shingen but it was Kagekatsu that actually ended up catching her, hmm. Now Kagekatsu failed the kidnapping, so Kenshin…? |D;;

2 failures for Kagekatsu (Takeda soldiers + Date kidnapping); 1 success (he caught MC from cliff)
3 failures for Kenshin (he missed grabbing her when she fell to Kagemochi, Shingen took her, he got distracted and wounded by Shingen); 2 success (he saved her against the Takeda soldiers; ended up winning Shingen fight)

Hrm, it’s kinda hard to draw clear lines for those LOL.

Haha, yeah I don’t agree with Masamune’s words either because everyone has their weaknesses. Kenshin’s is his rigid ideals that would make him extend a helping hand to someone clearly plotting something like Masamune. And to do dumb things like go alone to Shingen because he doesn’t want to mobilize his army for personal desires. And just in general fighting his ideals vs. desires.

Buuut Kagekatsu is objectively less experienced in warfare and swordsmanship. Of course these can be fixed through time but Masamune is brutal at striking him where it hurts at the moment :’D gotta wreck Kagekatsu’s self-confidence before he matures and becomes a problem later on–

I got a good laugh at the last line there because omg what are you talking about Masamune you just took the girl that everyone loves in Uesugi. It’s hella personal now. (Not to mention he dragged Kagekatsu so hard, how can anyone NOT make it personal now).

      Kenshin… :’)))))

Actually I was wondering if the speed in which Kagekatsu goes to the rescue means that he’s pretty much always close by…. XD

I can’t believe you actually count it! lol

Rather than comparing Kagekatsu to Kenshin, I think it’s more interesting to compare him with Masamune?
Masamune doesn’t look that much older than Kagekatsu after all, they seem to be of the same generation. But since Masamune’s already a commander, he’s more experienced in making difficult choices. Not to mention his harsh life, so he’s a lot more ruthless. Meanwhile, Kagekatsu is pretty much still under the shadow of Kenshin. I don’t like to say this, but the truth is Kagekatsu looks like a spoiled bocchama compared to Masamune. Then there’s also Yukimura, another commander of the same generation…
        Kagekatsu really has it tough.

Goodness, Uesugi route is basically Kenshin suffering because how many times Yuzuki’s abducted. I think this route has the highest rate of abduction?? |D

        Ilinox responded:
        May 5, 2018 at 08:53

Oh, that’s true about the ages! I wonder if Hideyoshi is part of the same generation too because it sounded like he was picked up by Nobunaga when he was young (I wonder if that makes Nobunaga old… or if he’s middle-aged now LOL. Meanwhile Motonari…)

As much as I drag on Kagekatsu’s weaknesses I think he’s in a good place to grow up and he just needs time to overcome his low self-confidence and perceived inferiority to Kenshin. He shouldn’t try to BE Kenshin imo and he should create his own style of governing. Although there are times I side-eye Kenshin’s parenting because, yes, it’s great you give the kid tasks you know he can accomplish and leave him to figure out his own road and beliefs but that’s also why I think Kagekatsu clings so hard to Yuzuki because he’s missing that unconditional reassurance and (obvious) support. Kenshin doesn’t talk often enough about how proud he is of Kagekatsu, lmao.

Masamune’s past makes me sad ;w; especially with the detail they went into in the anime because it sounds like he was just thrown into a leadership position without much support. No one really believed him and he had to make a tiny army work. He had the sink-or-swim childhood.

I wonder how Yukimura grew up, hmm. It sounds like Nobuyuki was a really good influence / balance? If anything actually Nobuyuki’s support of Yukimura is what Kenshin should emulate a bit for Kagekatsu LOL. Like give some advice but ultimately let Kagekatsu make his own decision. (Though it’s a bit harder here since Kenshin is still the general and has to make executive decisions).

LOL I don’t think anyone else’s route so far has had her abducted at all… Nobunaga encountered Hideyoshi about to make moves on the girl but she wasn’t taken away. Hideyoshi’s route is fine. Date’s route is also fine |D. Tsk tsk, Kenshin can’t keep his girl (maybe because he refuses to acknowledge his personal desires– //bricked).

        yukihime03 said:
        May 6, 2018 at 18:11

I think Hideyoshi is of the same generation but he seems older?
Like if Masamune, Yukimura, and Kagekatsu is around early 20s, Hideyoshi is mid-20s… Or probably because he seems a lot more mature than them. After all, those three come from samurai families, but Hideyoshi is not… I can believe that Nobunaga is middle-aged though. lol

I agree that with your opinion there about Kagekatsu. He can be a good leader, if only he gets over his issues… I think how the Uesugi people treat him also contributed to his low self-confidence, because it seems to me that they treat him as “Kenshin’s heir”, not as his own man. I think that’s why he’s close to Kanetsugu and Yuzuki, because they do not treat him as “Kenshin’s heir”.

I also wonder about Yukimura. He’s so sunshine-y, I’ll be surprised if he has a dark past. lol
If I think about it, Nobuyuki seems to apply the parenting style of a mother, while Kenshin applies the parenting style of a working father. Maybe that’s what Kagekatsu needs? A mom? |D (so that’s where Yuzuki comes in? :P)

I like the Uesugi people enough, but I can’t say I like how the route is going. I feel that they are wasted with this kind of route where what they do is mostly chasing after abducted Yuzuki…
