Chapter 3: Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way
As Shingen’s “herbalist”, she set out to search for a rare medicinal plant along with Masakage.
What was in front of them there was something more troubling than yakuma…!?
Chasing after Masakage-san who left first, I hurried towards the castle gates.
[YUZUKI]: “I’m sorry to have kept you waiting.”
[MASAKAGE]: “You’re so slow, geez… So? What herbs do you need today?”
[YUZUKI]: “Right, they’re drawn in this book. This one and this one. Also… ah, I want to try looking for this one too.”
When I opened the book to the pages where the herbs were described, Masakage-san came over to look at them with his brows furrowing.
[MASAKAGE]: “… Hm? What’s this weird one. I haven’t seen it around here…”
[YUZUKI]: “That’s what I thought… This one’s called the dream herb and it seems to be a really rare one.”
[YUZUKI]: “Like its name, it seems to have a good effect, and I thought maybe it could also work for Shingen-san’s disease, but…”
[MASAKAGE]: “This herb can heal Shingen-sama’s disease!?”
[YUZUKI]: “Erm, um… Masanobu-san said it might reduce the number of times a fit occurs.”
[MASAKAGE]: “That’s more than effective enough! Alright, let’s go find it!”
[YUZUKI]: “But, like you said just now, it’s a dream herb that no one has seen around here…”
[MASAKAGE]: “Around here, that is. If my memory isn’t wrong, I’ve seen that herb before.”
[MASAKAGE]: “It’s a herb for Shingen-sama, right? How could I lie.”
[MASAKAGE]: “I thought things like weeding were annoying, but it’s another story if it’s for Shingen-sama. Follow me. I’ll take you there.”
[YUZUKI]: “Thank you!”
[MASAKAGE]: “Don’t get too excited. It’s for Shingen-sama!”
[YUZUKI]: “Right. I know.”
[YUZUKI]: (Maybe I can say, thanks to Shingen-san, we’re talking pretty normally…!)
Everyone in Takeda adored Shingen-san, but Masakage-san in particular seemed to become more talkative when it was about Shingen-san.
[YUZUKI]: (At this rate we can talk a lot, and if we also find the dream herb…!)
[MASAKAGE]: “Look, we’re here. That weird herb should be growing around here.”
[YUZUKI]: “U-Um… Masakage-san, we’ve walked quite a bit. Where is this place…?”
[MASAKAGE]: “Oh crap, hide.”
[YUZUKI]: “Huh… wah!”
Masakage-san pushed me into the bushes without wasting any further breath, and pressed his index finger to his lips.
At the place where Masakage-san pointed at–
[UESUGI ARMY SOLDIER]: “There’s nothing unusual here. How about over there.”
[UESUGI ARMY SOLDIER]: “Nothing strange here either.”
[YUZUKI]: “Ah, if I’m not mistaken, those men are Uesugi soldiers from the battle we fought a while ago. Why are they here!?”
Unable to hide my surprise, I rapidly asked that while suppressing my voice.
[MASAKAGE]: “Why, you ask… isn’t it obvious. This is Uesugi’s lands. Well, the very very edge of it though.”
[YUZUKI]: “Whaaaaaat! Then this is the enemy’s lands!?”
[UESUGI ARMY SOLDIER]: “Ugh, it’s so annoying to do patrols. Nothing’s going to happen in such a remote area.”
[UESUGI ARMY SOLDIER]: “But lately there’s been talk about a ferocious monkey in this area. It seems like a number of our men have been attacked.”
[UESUGI ARMY SOLDIER]: “Aah! That thing about how, on top of it being small and quick, it suddenly appears out of the bushes to attack!”
[UESUGI ARMY SOLDIER]: “Gods, what an annoying monkey, huh.”
[YUZUKI]: “Phew… they went away without noticing us here.”
[MASAKAGE]: “…… Grgh! Those. Guys!”
[YUZUKI]: “Wha, what’s wrong?”
[MASAKAGE]: “Putting aside how they called me small, there wasn’t a need to call someone like me a monkey!?”
[YUZUKI]: “No way, those men just now were talking about… Huh? But, isn’t that weird?”
[YUZUKI]: “This is Uesugi territory, right? Why would you be coming and going from the enemy’s lands, Masakage-san?”
[MASAKAGE]: “Heh. I come here a lot to get combat experience.”
[YUZUKI]: “Co… combat experience!? In enemy territory!?”
[MASAKAGE]: “Idiooot. It’s training because it’s in enemy territory. Besides, I only give the Uesugi soldiers I find a vicious beating and that’s it.”
[MASAKAGE]: “It’s too bad I only meet small fry like those just now which aren’t worth fighting.”
[YUZUKI]: “Um… does Shingen-san know about this?”
[MASAKAGE]: “Huh? You don’t understand. There’s no way I’d say something uncool like “I’m going training!”.”
[MASAKAGE]: “Even at the best of times, I’m always being beaten up by Nobuharu-san and made to look clumsy…”
[YUZUKI]: (It’s not that I don’t understand but… Is this really okay…)
[MASAKAGE]: “Anyway, next time I see those guys who called me a monkey, I’m gonna pound them.”
[YUZUKI]: “R-Right… Um, more importantly, isn’t this bad? Searching for herbs in enemy lands.”
[MASAKAGE]: “Huh? Why do you think I’m with you. If it comes down to it, I’ll protect you properly ’cause Shingen-sama needs you.”
[YUZUKI]: “That makes me happy but we don’t have to go into danger like this…”
[MASAKAGE]: “…! Shh, be quiet. Someone’s coming again. Go deeper into the bushes.”
I hid my body deeper into the bushes as told and looked in the direction Masakage-san was glaring–
[MASAKAGE]: “…! Those clothes, and the lack of an opening… Plus, I’ve seen him many times on the battlefield. There’s no mistake, he’s one of Uesugi Army’s commanders!”
It would be bad if we were discovered by such a person and, in an instant, my body stiffened out of nervousness. But Masakage-san didn’t seem to be like that–
[MASAKAGE]: “Thing’s have gotten interesting with this guy!”
At the same time he said that, Masakage-san leapt out of the bushes excitedly.
