Chapter 3: Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way

As Shingen’s “herbalist”, she set out to search for a rare medicinal plant along with Masakage.

What was in front of them there was something more troubling than yakuma…!?

Chapter 3.2

Chasing after Masakage-san who left first, I hurried towards the castle gates.

[YUZUKI]: “I’m sorry to have kept you waiting.”

[MASAKAGE]: “You’re so slow, geez… So? What herbs do you need today?”

[YUZUKI]: “Right, they’re drawn in this book. This one and this one. Also… ah, I want to try looking for this one too.”

When I opened the book to the pages where the herbs were described, Masakage-san came over to look at them with his brows furrowing.

[MASAKAGE]: “… Hm? What’s this weird one. I haven’t seen it around here…”

[YUZUKI]: “That’s what I thought… This one’s called the dream herb and it seems to be a really rare one.”

[YUZUKI]: “Like its name, it seems to have a good effect, and I thought maybe it could also work for Shingen-san’s disease, but…”

[MASAKAGE]: “This herb can heal Shingen-sama’s disease!?”

[YUZUKI]: “Erm, um… Masanobu-san said it might reduce the number of times a fit occurs.”

[MASAKAGE]: “That’s more than effective enough! Alright, let’s go find it!”

[YUZUKI]: “But, like you said just now, it’s a dream herb that no one has seen around here…”

[MASAKAGE]: “Around here, that is. If my memory isn’t wrong, I’ve seen that herb before.”

[YUZUKI]: “Really!?”

[MASAKAGE]: “It’s a herb for Shingen-sama, right? How could I lie.”

[MASAKAGE]: “I thought things like weeding were annoying, but it’s another story if it’s for Shingen-sama. Follow me. I’ll take you there.”

[YUZUKI]: “Thank you!”

[MASAKAGE]: “Don’t get too excited. It’s for Shingen-sama!”

[YUZUKI]: “Right. I know.”

[YUZUKI]: (Maybe I can say, thanks to Shingen-san, we’re talking pretty normally…!)

Everyone in Takeda adored Shingen-san, but Masakage-san in particular seemed to become more talkative when it was about Shingen-san.

[YUZUKI]: (At this rate we can talk a lot, and if we also find the dream herb…!)

[MASAKAGE]: “Look, we’re here. That weird herb should be growing around here.”

[YUZUKI]: “U-Um… Masakage-san, we’ve walked quite a bit. Where is this place…?”

[MASAKAGE]: “Oh crap, hide.”

[YUZUKI]: “Huh… wah!”

Masakage-san pushed me into the bushes without wasting any further breath, and pressed his index finger to his lips.

[MASAKAGE]: “Look.”

[YUZUKI]: “……?”

At the place where Masakage-san pointed at–

[UESUGI ARMY SOLDIER]: “There’s nothing unusual here. How about over there.”

[UESUGI ARMY SOLDIER]: “Nothing strange here either.”

[YUZUKI]: “Ah, if I’m not mistaken, those men are Uesugi soldiers from the battle we fought a while ago. Why are they here!?”

Unable to hide my surprise, I rapidly asked that while suppressing my voice.

[MASAKAGE]: “Why, you ask… isn’t it obvious. This is Uesugi’s lands. Well, the very very edge of it though.”

[YUZUKI]: “Whaaaaaat! Then this is the enemy’s lands!?”

[UESUGI ARMY SOLDIER]: “Ugh, it’s so annoying to do patrols. Nothing’s going to happen in such a remote area.”

[UESUGI ARMY SOLDIER]: “But lately there’s been talk about a ferocious monkey in this area. It seems like a number of our men have been attacked.”

[UESUGI ARMY SOLDIER]: “Aah! That thing about how, on top of it being small and quick, it suddenly appears out of the bushes to attack!”

[UESUGI ARMY SOLDIER]: “Gods, what an annoying monkey, huh.”

[YUZUKI]: “Phew… they went away without noticing us here.”

[MASAKAGE]: “…… Grgh! Those. Guys!”

[YUZUKI]: “Wha, what’s wrong?”

[MASAKAGE]: “Putting aside how they called me small, there wasn’t a need to call someone like me a monkey!?”

[YUZUKI]: “No way, those men just now were talking about… Huh? But, isn’t that weird?”

[YUZUKI]: “This is Uesugi territory, right? Why would you be coming and going from the enemy’s lands, Masakage-san?”

[MASAKAGE]: “Heh. I come here a lot to get combat experience.”

[YUZUKI]: “Co… combat experience!? In enemy territory!?”

[MASAKAGE]: “Idiooot. It’s training because it’s in enemy territory. Besides, I only give the Uesugi soldiers I find a vicious beating and that’s it.”

[MASAKAGE]: “It’s too bad I only meet small fry like those just now which aren’t worth fighting.”

[YUZUKI]: “Um… does Shingen-san know about this?”

[MASAKAGE]: “Huh? You don’t understand. There’s no way I’d say something uncool like “I’m going training!”.”

[MASAKAGE]: “Even at the best of times, I’m always being beaten up by Nobuharu-san and made to look clumsy…”

[YUZUKI]: (It’s not that I don’t understand but… Is this really okay…)

[MASAKAGE]: “Anyway, next time I see those guys who called me a monkey, I’m gonna pound them.”

[YUZUKI]: “R-Right… Um, more importantly, isn’t this bad? Searching for herbs in enemy lands.”

[MASAKAGE]: “Huh? Why do you think I’m with you. If it comes down to it, I’ll protect you properly ’cause Shingen-sama needs you.”

[YUZUKI]: “That makes me happy but we don’t have to go into danger like this…”

[MASAKAGE]: “…! Shh, be quiet. Someone’s coming again. Go deeper into the bushes.”

[YUZUKI]: “O-Okay.”

I hid my body deeper into the bushes as told and looked in the direction Masakage-san was glaring–

[MASAKAGE]: “…! Those clothes, and the lack of an opening… Plus, I’ve seen him many times on the battlefield. There’s no mistake, he’s one of Uesugi Army’s commanders!”

[YUZUKI]: “What…!”

It would be bad if we were discovered by such a person and, in an instant, my body stiffened out of nervousness. But Masakage-san didn’t seem to be like that–

[MASAKAGE]: “Thing’s have gotten interesting with this guy!”

At the same time he said that, Masakage-san leapt out of the bushes excitedly.

Aaaahhh!! What the hell is he thinking! To provoke one of Uesugi commanders just for the sake of ‘training’ and get things ‘interesting’, instead of keeping her safe. He should know by now that she won’t keep quiet hiding in the bushes. She will try to help, and I’m pretty sure she will attract the attention of the Uesugi.

    Masakage! You, annoying brat!

All he cares about is getting stronger and proving that he’s a strong warrior :”)) and while I can kind of understand where he’s coming from, like you said, it’s an absolutely reckless move!

No, it’s not good, as it goes to the enemy’s land without its colleagues knowing. God, some of you hit Masakage, it’s too reckless and on top of it is her.

Exactly!! He can go on whatever training trips he wants to go on but maybe not into the enemy territory and definitely not with someone like MC!

When I first read this, I was like “Hideyoshi??”, but when I read the next line, I realized the meant Masakage. LMAO

Now I kinda wanna see Hideyoshi and Masakage going toe-to-toe for the nickname Monkey…. |D
(Toukichi will always win though. :P)

Anyway, does this mean Masakage will be a punching bag in the next part…? That’s awfully reckless. Ckckck~

I don’t know why there’s so many monkey analogies here, hahaha. Although, now that I think about it, I think Nobunaga is the only one who calls Hideyoshi a monkey all the time. Like even Hideyoshi’s own people don’t say anything and no one else, if they ever refer to Toyotomi, says anything about the monkey stuff.

LOL There’s actually another monkey person that’ll need to be included and it’s Sasuke from the Sanada army |D he’s known as a wild monkey too and has wild monkey buddies he can talk to, kind of like Hideyoshi and Toukichi.

OH MY GOD LMAO the punching bag reference will never leave Masakage but… you’re so right…

Because I think only Nobunaga knows the true nature of Hideyoshi?? lmao
Hideyoshi reminds me of the Monkey King from the Journey to the West, because he is also carefree and awfully cunning, though not as naughty… I think?

So we have actual monkey, monkey king, little monkey, and wild monkey? |D

omg I love that naming scheme for all the monkeys in SNB fgkhjkfgj they can form their own monkey clan at this rate. Since Kagemochi has had two monkey episodes now he should be thrown in there too as the monkey tamer LOL.

Oh right! There were monkey episodes with Kagemochi too!
But I think Kagemochi will be so overwhelmed as monkey tamer.. Toukichi is well-mannered enough (and will probably be scared to death of Kagemochi), but the other three… |D
Monkey clan will be a noisy clan…

Err, you put yourself in danger, Masakage. Truly. And… Don’t put any fight with Kagemochi, plz…
Beside, Yuzuki was in there, plz retreat, for yourself too :(
(Even yeah, I don’t really like him, like Kanetsugu. But I guess… Kanetsugu is a little better than Masakage *oops, sorry)

As always, thank you for your hard works~!! ^^

      Ilinox responded:
      June 10, 2018 at 10:50

Oh! That’s surprising to hear that you rank Kanetsugu higher than Masakage for yourself |D I still have Kanetsugu down there because Masakage’s struggles in CH3.4 were really relatable and hit me heard ;w; he’s just trying his best. But yeah I totally agree that him jumping out like this is reckless. Not only is he challenging another commander but he’s injured and also in their territory! I mean, granted Takeda and Uesugi are already at war but you shouldn’t just make random aggressions into another person’s territory.

At first, I more like Masakage than Kanetsugu. Maybe after I read his first *5 I become like him more than Masakage… But still, I still choose Kagemochi and Masanobu as my fav chars~

Another monkey lol 😂 Why so many monkeys here in snb 🙊🙉🙈
Hmm….. K________ is always associate with monkeys, first in his card story and now with Masakage, a monkey business? Lol 😂

Oh no no no, watch what you said for, that’s a full grown wolf Masakage and I feel yah about being called small 😜

      Ilinox responded:
      June 10, 2018 at 10:48

I guess because they can’t compare the guys to dogs or anything since they’re already wolves? |D;; And it’d be weird to call them cats because no one does that so… monkeys??

LOL I didn’t make that connection but you’re right. It’s actually kind of fitting because he’s a monkey tamer ;D now we just have to see him meet Hideyoshi and Sasuke and it’ll be complete.

I have this mental image now of a puppy running up to a full grown wolf and trying to attack it, hahaha.

[MASAKAGE]: “Putting aside how they called me small, there wasn’t a need to call someone like me a monkey!?”

i double check masakage’s history background. one thing for sure is hideyoshi toyotomi has nickname Kozaru, meaning “little monkey”. nothing about masakage being a monkey

[MASAKAGE]: “Thing’s have gotten interesting with this guy!”

YOU IDIOT!!! not my husbando. poor masakage. im in takeda route and yet im worried about ______

      Ilinox responded:
      June 10, 2018 at 10:46

I dunno why monkeys are so popular in this game but yeah we have Hideyoshi with an actual monkey, Toukichi, and his nickname in real history.

Masakage is compared to as a savage monkey here.

Sasuke is also known as a monkey and has actual monkey friends too LOL.

:”)) this chapter feels pretty awful because on one hand ___ is SO brutal but on the other hand, oh man I love it when he shows his merciless side– hahahaha.
