Chapter 4: Adversity Tests the Character of a Man

Around the time she started to become accustomed to life in Shinga, a letter from a neighbouring ally arrived.

On the way to negotiations, Masanobu told her there was something only she could do…

Chapter 4.1

[SHINGEN]: “Hagh! Hyaagh!”

As usual, while Shingen-san and the others were zealously training this morning, I was watching over them until my turn as a herbalist came.

[SHINGEN]: “HAARGH!”

[YUZUKI]: (Shingen-san… what amazing force.)

.[YUZUKI]: (And everyone else too–)

[NOBUHARU]: “Now, Masakage, try getting a blow on me today.”

[MASAKAGE]: “Alriiiight! Now’s the only time you’ll get to act cool like that!”

[MASANOBU]: “… So you say, but you’ve continued to lose today too, Masakage.”

[MASAKAGE]: “S-Shut up! The referee should keep quiet!”

[MASATOYO]: “Haha…”

[YUZUKI]: (Everyone in the Takeda Army is really addicted to training from the morning, huh.)

[YUZUKI]: (Is this what they call being sports-oriented? I’ve never experienced this kind of world, so it’s kind of fresh.)

[MASAKAGE]: “Oraagh!”

[NOBUHARU]: “… Hmph!”

[MASAKAGE]: “Gugh…!”

[MASANOBU]: “Match end, enough!”

[MASAKAGE]: “… Dammit!!! I lost again!!!”

[NOBUHARU]: “Hm, that wasn’t a bad attack, but you were lacking half a step when you stepped in. Aim more at your opponent’s chest, and go straight at it–“

[YUZUKI]: “For now, everyone, let’s put that topic aside and let me treat your wounds first.”

[YUZUKI]: “Especially you, Masakage-kun, let me check you up properly. Even though you must be injured, you never let me treat you…”

[MASAKAGE]: “D-Don’t call me by name!”

[SHINGEN]: “Hahaha! She has her eye completely on you, Masakage.”

[YUZUKI]: “Shingen-san, you can’t really say that either, you know? Lately, there’s been times where you say you “forgot” your medicine and don’t take it.”

[SHINGEN]: “Gugh, t-that’s because… It’s gotten bitter again recently. It was sweet at the start, so what’s up with that?”

[YUZUKI]: “I learned after studying that good medicine is bitter. In the end, there’s an actual point behind medicine being bitter.”

[YUZUKI]: “As for the taste, I’ll try different things to improve it in the future, so please bear with it for now and take it.”

[SHINGEN]: “Yeah, yeah, alright. I just need to take it, right?”

[NOBUHARU]: “Fuhaha! Right now, you’re a legitimate herbalist who is indispensable to the Takeda Army.”

[MASAKAGE]: “Hah, this girl’s just fussy.”

[YUZUKI]: “If you say that, Masakage-kun, you’re the only one who won’t get treated, you know?”

[MASAKAGE]: “Like I care. I didn’t ask for treatment in the first place, so nyeh.”

[YUZUKI]: “Geez, stop saying that!”

[NOBUHARU]: “… Hm.”

[YUZUKI]: “…? Is something wrong, Nobuharu-san?”

[NOBUHARU]: “Do you wish to get married?”

[YUZUKI]: “Huh? M-Married!?”

[NOBUHARU]: “Lately, you’ve been getting along profusely well with Masakage. So, I thought you two were in love but… am I wrong?”

[MASAKAGE]: “Y-Y-Y-Y-Y-Y-You’re wrong! T-That’s impossible!!”

[NOBUHARU]: “Hm, so you’re not in love.”

[NOBUHARU]: “Then, is there someone you like?”

[YUZUKI]: “Huhh!? W-Why are you asking that all of a sudden…”

[NOBUHARU]: “It’s not strange for someone your age to be married.”

[YUZUKI]: “R-Really!?”

[NOBUHARU]: “So, what is it. Is there someone you like?”

[YUZUKI]: “N-No… not in particular…”

[MASAKAGE]: “O-Ohh… really, there’s none, huh.”

[MASAKAGE]: “Th, then… what kind of guy do you like? A strong guy in the end? Do you like strong men!?”

[YUZUKI]: “When you suddenly ask that I’m…”

[MASANOBU]: “Hey, now. You’re bothering her. Both of you, stop right there.”

[MASANOBU]: “Sorry about these boorish men. It’s always been an all-male household, so they’re lacking in consideration… Are you alright?”

[YUZUKI]: “Y-Yes. I’m fine.”

[YUZUKI]: (… Although… marriage, huh. I thought something like marriage was still far ahead in my future, but…)

[YUZUKI]: (People in this world marry at a really young age…… wow.)

[MASATOYO]: “Ah, speaking of marriage, this letter arrived just now.”

[SHINGEN]: “Hm? W-Wait a moment…!”

[MASATOYO]: “Huh? Is something the matter, Shingen-sama.”

[SHINGEN]: “Masatoyo. You… how long have you been there?”

[MASATOYO]: “Whaaat…!? I was here from the start… ahaha, is my presence really that weak…”

[NOBUHARU]: “Fuhahaha, well, it’s the same as always.”

[NOBUHARU]: “More importantly, Masatoyo. What’s written in that letter?”

[MASATOYO]: “Erm… actually, we received it just now so I’ve hardly looked through it, but… the sender is the general of a neighboring territory.”

[SHINGEN]: “Neighboring territory? It can’t be from Kenshin!?”

[MASATOYO]: “Ah, no, it’s not him. It’s from our ally; the rich one.”

[SHINGEN]: “… Oh, that guy.”

[YUZUKI]: “… Who is that person?”

[SHINGEN]: “Well, that guy is… although he’s an allied general, he’s somewhat of a stuck-up relying on the power of his money…”

[SHINGEN]: “I can’t get along with that guy, but… a part of our economy runs around interacting with that territory.”

[SHINGEN]: “Well? What’s his business? Is it something like giving us money again for handing over reinforcements?”

[MASATOYO]: “Um, as I mentioned just now, I’ve only skimmed it lightly but…”

[MASATOYO]: “It appears that… he wishes “to receive a concubine” in Yuzuki. Moreover–“

[MASAKAGE]: “WHAT!? –G-Give me that!”

[MASATOYO]: “Ah, hold on…”

[MASAKAGE]: “……”

[MASAKAGE]: “T-This is bad…”

[SHINGEN]: “What. What’s written?”

[MASAKAGE]: “… He’s coming.”

[SHINGEN]: “Huh?”

[MASAKAGE]: “This noon, the general over there is coming to personally confirm this, is what’s written.”

[MASAKAGE]: “Uh, he happened to see this girl while she was on errands, and it was love at first sight… he’s going to make her a concubine, so hand her over obediently…?”

[MASAKAGE]: “Moreover, if we don’t hand her over they’ll break off our economic relations and, on top of that, send soldiers… what the hell!!”

[YUZUKI]: “Wha, whaaaaaat!?”

[SHINGEN]: “If we refuse, it’ll be a war, huh…! Plus, it won’t be long at all until noon!”

[MASANOBU]: “That territory is economically prosperous, so if they break off relations, then Takeda territory won’t be able to keep up… They won’t allow us to refuse, hm.”

Suddenly wanting a concubine– and, on top of that, sending troops if we refused was such an unrealistic sounding story that I had difficulties reacting until Shingen-san questioned me in a serious voice.

[SHINGEN]: “… How about it?”

[YUZUKI]: “Huh?”

[SHINGEN]: “To be honest, the other person is extremely rich… a concubine isn’t the official wife, but I can hardly say it’s a bad deal.”

[SHINGEN]: “His personality is somewhat bad, but… you’ll probably be able to live a life lacking for nothing.”

[SHINGEN]: “What are your feelings? That’s what I want to know right now. Please tell me how you really feel.”

[YUZUKI]: “I… I…”

Is it better to get married in order to help the Takeda Army– is what I thought. But Shingen-san’s expression was serious to the utmost–

[YUZUKI]: (Shingen-san is really trying to value my personal feelings. So, I need to answer him honestly…)

[YUZUKI]: (Besides, if I find Himemiko-sama, I’ll be returning to my original world. I can’t think of marriage–)

[YUZUKI]: “I… being the concubine of a person I haven’t met… I don’t want that.”

[SHINGEN]: “… Great. I understand.”

[YUZUKI]: “I’m really sorry…! Um, when you refuse I’ll be there too, and I’ll do something so that there won’t be a conflict–“

[SHINGEN]: “In that case, the answer from us to our ally is– a declaration of war!”

[YUZUKI]: “…… Huh!?”

[NOBUHARU]: “Fuhaha, my blood is boiling!”

[SHINGEN]: “Masanobu, we can do it, right?”

[MASANOBU]: “Yes, of course. It’d be different if it was Uesugi, but if it’s that territory then we can make war preparations in time with the equipment we prepare right now.”

[YUZUKI]: “Wha? Huh!? Please wait a moment. W-We’re really going to war…?”

[SHINGEN]: “Our opponent is one who’ll pressure us with soldiers and breaking off economic relations. If we don’t refuse him firmly here, he’ll take advantage of us and make unreasonable demands in the future.”

[SHINGEN]: “Besides, we really like you. Frankly speaking, that kind of talk wasn’t amusing.”

[SHINGEN]: “I could tell from your face that you didn’t like this proposal. So, even if you were to hide your feelings and say you were going as a concubine, I’d do this.”

[SHINGEN]: “We’ll definitely protect you, so don’t worry.”

Really like you– even while knowing those words had no other meaning, my heart skipped a beat and pounded loudly.

[MASAKAGE]: “… D-Don’t misunderstand. I’m not like that! I’m only protecting you according to the Takeda Army’s plan.”

[MASANOBU]: “Masakage, at this time you should be honest.”

[MASAKAGE]: “S-Shut uppp!”

[SHINGEN]: “You guys, let’s stop chatting there, and prepare for war! It’s been a while, but let’s get right to it!”

[EVERYONE]: “Oorah!”

[YUZUKI]: (… I can’t believe it became like this. What exactly is going to happen from here…?)

(T/N: I really like the idiom here though we don’t have a direct translation for it in English, so I went with a creative but close one. But literally it means a harsh wind/gale will show what grass is wind-resistant/hardy LOL. aka. Tough times will show a person’s true ability/character.

Anyway, I really love this chapter because 1) Asking about heroine’s preference LOL 2) Shingen being considerate and caring, asking about her feelings, even though he was gonna go to war anyway. Annnd I get plot bunnies in imagining a marriage request that actually DID come from Kenshin omg or another one of the main armies. When I read this for the first time, I thought this was one of Kagemochi’s plans to confirm heroine’s powers, haha.)

[NOBUHARU]: “Do you wish to get married?”

Yes, to you as a matter of fact

[NOBUHARU]: “Lately, you’ve been getting along profusely well with Masakage. So, I thought you two were in love but… am I wrong?”

    Yes, very wrong. It’s you I –

[NOBUHARU]: “Hm, so you’re not in love.”

    What did I just say

[NOBUHARU]: “Then, is there someone you like?”

    YOU

[NOBUHARU]: “It’s not strange for someone your age to be married.”

    You’re totally right
    So why don’t we –

[NOBUHARU]: “So, what is it. Is there someone you like?”

    What’d I just say

Dont mind me over pining for Nobuharu and losing myself in wishful thinking

[YUZUKI]: (Is this what they call being sports-oriented? I’ve never experienced this kind of world, so it’s kind of fresh.)

Now I can imagine the Takeda guys as members of sports club and Yuzuki as their manager in a school AU… She acts like one too. |D
To go even further, I can imagine Uesugi guys as members of arts/literature club. Not really sure where to put the others, but I feel Oda guys fit the student council…

[NOBUHARU]: “Do you wish to get married?”

LMAO, NOBUHARU, THAT CAME OUT OF LEFT FIELD.
And lol at Masakage. He’s not calm AT ALL. XD
No one is fooled, Masakage, we know how you actually feel. Hahahahahaha

      Ilinox responded:
      June 14, 2018 at 10:00

Aww, haha, that’d be such a cute AU and oh man Takeda would definitely be sports. I could see Uesugi being sports too to be rivals with Takeda but you’re right they’d need a classier sport. Something like… tennis vs. football? Hahahaha. But arts/literature would definitely suit Kenshin’s cultured-ness. I could also see Uesugi being the student council committee though because of how much they like justice and order. But then oh yeah Oda… Nobunaga would definitely strive for a position of power, hmm.

For a second I thought that was Nobuharu going to just be like “yah, I like you girl” because he brought that up but instead it led to a more awkward conversation of trying to find out who she actually likes LOL.

Now that you bring up tennis, why did somehow I picture Uesugi guys like in the Prince of Tennis. *facepalm* What a weird picture….

If talking about justice and power, I think Uesugi guys are more suitable as Discipline Committee than student council then?

Those guys are not subtle at all. Ah well, that’s what I like about Takeda guys. |D

First I was like: What the hell with the questioning from Nobuharu?!?!?!?!

I think if it had been me, even if I hadn’t answered, my eyes would have traveled right to Shingen. LOL. (I’m always so obvious with my feelings. My face cannot lie.) D=
But, of course, at this point we don’t really know if she had feelings for him… Though at the end of the chapter we have this little hint: “Really like you– even while knowing those words had no other meaning, my heart skipped a beat and pounded loudly.”

Then I was like: WHAAAAAT!! Who the hell dared to write that?!?!?! O_o
I’m sure it was Hideyoshi. ¬¬

[MASAKAGE]: “Th, then… what kind of guy do you like? A strong guy in the end? Do you like strong men!?”
I believe he asked thinking she might like Nobuharu… Or any other of the guys, except him.

We know what Shingen was thinking about the letter and her answer, but I wonder, what was he thinking when they were asking who she liked? It kind of bothers me that Masanobu was the one shielding her from the other guys instead of Shingen.

      Ilinox responded:
      June 13, 2018 at 23:27

RIGHT!? ME TOO. Especially Masakage’s like “you like strong men right!?” I would have been like “Errrrr *looks at Shingen*”. Heehee, I think hearing some unfamiliar but nice guy just straight up say they like you will make anyone kind of embarrassed and pleased |D.

Hey now! Why is everyone blaming my poor monkey boy!! He hasn’t done anything like this except in his own route |D;; he hasn’t even written a marriage letter to Nobunaga’s heroine… although I guess he was flirting super heavily with her… oops.

LOL Masakage was totally testing the waters to see how strong he’d need to be to enter her eyes or be a candidate. Sorry, Masakage, I don’t like younger men or shorter men– //bricked.

Now that everyone’s brought it up, I’m super curious as to what Shingen was thinking too in that scene. Currently, he doesn’t seem to see her much in a romantic light though (at least that’s the feeling I get) and almost treats her like a sister or close female friend. But then again he made those comments when he was drinking her blood, hmmm. He’s too smooth and natural it’s hard to tell whether he’s aware of what he’s doing or just being touchy LOL.

Kinda out of the topic, but I guess gonna put in here…

Well, my patience (not to roll in Kagekatsu banner) is paying off, since… New SR Masamune is coming!!!! I kinda curious about the story and the voice, what gonna happen to Masamune’s voice…. *sobs*

Okay, back to the topic. The heck what?! That’s… Omg, I almost can’t say anything, but thankfully, Yuzuki didn’t accept that political marriage (did I say it right?) But if those letter was from Kenshin, I… Don’t really know that I’ll accept that or not… Can’t wait the next part~!!

Thank you for your hard works~!! ^^

There’s only one person who would do this in my head… -_-… Hideyoshi… -_- *sigh* Why am I not surprised… He’s kept asking her for marriage before after all. Now, I hope I didn’t make a fool of myself and get that wrong later. :)

Yeah, that “ore no yome” word (if you watch the anime, you’ll find that word a lot XD), remind me to Kazama from Hakuouki, he called Chizuru “waga tsuma”. Guys, you haven’t married…

        Ilinox responded:
        June 13, 2018 at 15:11

@leohikarusora: I’m really curious about the Kagemochi one except the subtitle makes it sound really sad :’)) it’s basically “watching over growth” which is uhh hmm especially since the theme of the event gacha is once again those who act behind the scenes/in the shadows (and the blade of punishment which is UH LOL but can also be read as blade of sanction). TL;DR the theme of the gacha seems to be like officially allowed actions and those who act behind the scenes/another person’s back.

But they usually record voice lines wayy ahead! For example, Darling in the FranXX still has Umehara’s voice /o/.

In this case, I don’t think it’s a political marriage because Takeda isn’t gaining anything out of it and she’s not becoming the official wife LOL she’s just being demanded over as a concubine. If anything she’s more like a tribute, if Takeda were to bow to these demands, ack.

@Faura: Ahaha, I think at this point the vampires + werewolves are still very separated from each other because they haven’t seen each other in any other route. But omg I wouldn’t put it pass Hideyoshi to do something wild like this.

I love those terms to be honest :”D it’s so cute when a couple refers to each other with endearments like that, although in these two cases it is hilariously narcissistic.

L M A O. I gotta admit my true true first thoughts upon being asked by Shingen as to what I thought re: marriage and concubine-hood was “well is he attractive?” GJFHKJGH. If he’s rich, attractive, and not too dumb and can have a bid for higher power, why not (like basically a lesser Nobunaga or Hideyoshi)!! I’m so sorry :’) I’m a gold digger at heart. But then next chapter came around and I was like “UHHHH NVM.”

    AMBER said:

Ah, finally I can catch up lol. I do love this chapter too. At first I thought Shingen is just caring and considerate but now I wonder if he himself may also want to know what she will reply, like he wants to see her reaction or something. If she replied immediately that she doesn’t want to be a concubine so badly, that would make him happy, something like that :) And the way Masakage is shock haha, he can’t really hide anything.

If the proposal was made by Kenshin -/////- too much for my heart, it’s going to be another story. If there was a fiction about the 2 armies fighting for Yuzuki of Shinga, I would definitely jump to it!

@AMBER: I think so too about Shingen! I wish we had more of his reactions about like what he thought when Masakage and Nobuharu were grilling the MC on what kind of guy she likes LOL. Or he’s just really unconcerned about that like Masanobu (cause they’re super confident they can turn her head to them if they want to– //bricked). Or maybe he didn’t notice cause he’s dense. I honestly can’t tell if Shingen is smooth, naturally smooth and aware, or naturally smooth but doesn’t realize his actions are so romantic…

Haha, I could maybe see something like a political marriage :”D either because Takeda needs resources or they want a temporary truce but Uesugi will only trust them via an alliance through marriage. Although, honestly, Kagemochi would probably volunteer to take Kenshin’s spot as a marriage candidate and because he’s probably the type best suited for it :’)) keeping the bride-potential-spy at a formal distance but still being cordial and making her fall for him cause he’s too sneaky smooth.

[NOBUHARU]: “It’s not strange for someone your age to be married.”
[NOBUHARU]: “Do you wish to get married?”

damn it noubuharu why are you reminding me. im already 25. some of my friends get married after they graduated in college. i also have female friends when they’re 29 yrs old or on their way to 30’s who get desperate.

[NOBUHARU]: “Lately, you’ve been getting along profusely well with Masakage. So, I thought you two were in love but… am I wrong?”

not with masakage. pls. not that kid.

[NOBUHARU]: “Then, is there someone you like?”

if someone is going to ask that to me. it’s either i change topic or walk away. most of my crush fell in love with my friends. and i never have luck with men.

[MASAKAGE]: “Th, then… what kind of guy do you like? A strong guy in the end? Do you like strong men!?”

dont tell me you’re referring to yourself.

[YUZUKI]: (People in this world marry at a really young age…… wow.)

during my ancestor’s time or my grandparents time. it was normal back then. here in my place it’s psossible to get married early if you got accidentaly pregnant at the very young age.

[MASATOYO]: “It appears that… he wishes “to receive a concubine” in Yuzuki. Moreover–“

can i kill that? i would never allow myself to be a concubine.

[MASAKAGE]: “Uh, he happened to see this girl while she was on errands, and it was love at first sight… he’s going to make her a concubine, so hand her over obediently…?”

i never believe at love at first sight. telling me to hand myself? im not that cheap.

[SHINGEN]: “If we refuse, it’ll be a war, huh…! Plus, it won’t be long at all until noon!”

why am i remembering helen of troy? i’ll rather run or commit suicide

    [YUZUKI]: “I… being the concubine of a person I haven’t met… I don’t want that.”

i’ll agree with you this one yuzuki

[SHINGEN]: “Besides, we really like you. Frankly speaking, that kind of talk wasn’t amusing.”

i’ll rather marry you. but thank you for being considerate with my feelings.

Ooh, just caught the announcements this morning and yeah the title is roughly like “Overflowing Love and the Future Bride” |D;; (not sure how happy I am with the word overflowing right now since koboreru has more connotations of like… something spilling over).

Basically, the Oda Army sees a bridal procession getting attacked by yakuma on its way to another territory, so they help out and get asked to be bodyguards for the rest of the way. Meanwhile, the bodyguards of the groom’s side is the Takeda army LOL.

Ngl when I first read this chapter I was like “Yep, there’s someone I like. He’s tall, wears red, has a really charismatic and warm personality but sometimes does reckless things and ignores his health and medicine–” LOL.

I believe in love at first sight :’D but the person should definitely still make an effort to get to know the person they fell in love with and respect the other person’s feelings. Not Mr. Be-My-Concubine-or-WAR here, haha.

IIRC Mitsuhide had a limited gacha (the one with the flower bouquet) that had him imagining/dreaming he was proposing to the heroine or being on a date with her.

Err…. I can’t imagine it well if Mitsuhide gonna propose Yuzuki, but I think it went well if Mitsuhide ask Yuzuki to date him… But I kinda curious the card story (since I don’t have it…)

To be fair, he took her (or they ended up at?? the details are vague) to a flower field and she is reminded of this TV drama she saw LOL where there was a super romantic proposal here and she basically recalls the lines for Mitsuhide and he’s like “huh, interesting”. And then they take a short rest beneath a tree and they both fall asleep and in Mitsuhide’s dreams he’s taken the place of the lead in that TV drama scene and he pretty much reenacts it to the heroine, unable to control himself |D. And then he wakes up and tries to uhh say something romantic to the heroine but ends up becoming super flustered (so you guys are right in that he’s not smooth at all) and he ends up changing it from something really romantic to just like… a promise? And it’s super cute.

I didn’t get the card story either but it was linked here in the comments a while back /o\. Mitsuhide cards and I have no fate LOL. I’ve never gotten one of his event gachas…

When I first playing this game, the first event was… Collab with Osomatsu-san? But since I don’t really like those series, didn’t paying attention to it… And after that, event that have Kagekatsu *5, Kanetsugu *4 (which he bring an umbrella), and Kagemochi *4 (IIRC @ilinox have already translated the story)…

But in the next event, there will Mitsuhide *4 and Katsuie *4 too (from twitter), I think you can get it…
