Chapter 4: Adversity Tests the Character of a Man
Around the time she started to become accustomed to life in Shinga, a letter from a neighbouring ally arrived.
On the way to negotiations, Masanobu told her there was something only she could do…
[SHINGEN]: “Come on, what’s wrong? The skills of your country’s best is leaving me in tears, you know?”
[MASAKAGE]: “Woah there, it’s too early for trash like you to fight Shingen-sama!”
.[NOBUHARU]: “Fuhahaha, I’m going to enjoy myself fully!”
[MASANOBU]: “Ohh, those enemy commanders are repelling both their attacks firmly.”
[MASATOYO]: “It seems that talk about them being fierce warriors was true.”
[SHINGEN]: “Though, it looks like it’s taking all they have to keep back Masakage and Nobuharu.”
[YUZUKI]: “U-Um, Shingen-san! Is it okay for things to end up in a fight…?”
[SHINGEN]: “Hm? Like I said, there’s few enemies. We won’t lose.”
[YUZUKI]: “T-That’s not it… um, things like breaking the alliance…”
[MASANOBU]: “Nothing can be done about that, since we can’t battle in an alliance. We just need to win. Our prospects of victory are high too… only, it was Shingen-sama who drew his blade first.”
[MASANOBU]: “It was Takeda who started the war–… it can’t be helped if that ends up being said.”
[SHINGEN]: “Hahaha. That’s true.”
[ALLIED GENERAL]: “Hmph, do not think this matter will end like this! I’ve brought along other troops as well!”
[ALLIED GENERAL]: “Now, onwards, everyone! Kill them all! However, do not kill the girl! Capture her! Call in the units standing by in the distance!”
[SHINGEN]: “Well, I expected it wasn’t gonna just be these few people. After all, you’re another territory’s general. You have enough caution to at least hide soldiers.”
[SHINGEN]: “But, that’s not going to be a serious problem. C’mon, come at me. I’ll be their opponent!”
[YUZUKI]: (Even Shingen-san has started fighting…! What should I…)
[MASANOBU]: “Now then… we need to do our jobs too. Will you come with me?”
[YUZUKI]: “Is there something I can do too!?”
[MASANOBU]: “Mhm. Rather… it’s something only you can do. So, come– take my hand.”
[YUZUKI]: “Ah… o-okay!”
I placed my own hand on top of Masanobu’s with a somewhat racing heart and started walking with him.
Feeling the noises of Shingen-san and the others’ swords and shouts gradually become distant, Masanobu-san and I proceeded through the plains at a quick pace.
[MASANOBU]: “Are you alright? This isn’t too fast, it it?”
[YUZUKI]: “It’s somewhat okay. And you’re pulling me by the hand, Masanobu-san, so…”
[YUZUKI]: (For some reason, after saying it, I’m overly conscious of the fact that we’re holding hands…)
[YUZUKI]: “Erm, Masanobu-san, so what is it that only I can do?”
To distract myself I asked this question and Masanobu-san answered like this with a grin.
[MASANOBU]: “Mm. Running away like this with me.”
[YUZUKI]: “Er… you’re j-joking, right?”
[MASANOBU]: “Nope. Actually, this is part of our plan as well.”
[MASANOBU]: “I believe you’ve realized this faintly but… we expected beforehand that, after the declaration of war, things would become a battle.”
[MASANOBU]: “It’s my duty to help you escape the man who came to take you away by force.”
[MASANOBU]: “And, it’s your duty to run away together with me.”
[YUZUKI]: “That’s certainly a job only I can do since I’m targeted, but…”
[YUZUKI]: “But to be the only one to run away and leave behind everyone who’s fighting…”
[MASANOBU]: “Haha, Shingen-sama predicted that reaction of yours too. He said if we told you this plan in advance, you’d definitely refuse.”
[MASANOBU]: “By the way… I was given a verbal message for you from Shingen-sama.”
Saying that, Masanobu-san coughed once and then told me the verbal message.
[MASANOBU]: “… Sorry for tricking you. But our goal isn’t to defeat the enemy in this battle. Our problem is whether or not we can protect you.”
[MASANOBU]: “If you get snatched away, the enemy’ll have achieved their goal. At that point in time, it’ll be like we lost.”
[MASANOBU]: “That’s why, though you might not agree with this, run away with Masanobu.”
[YUZUKI]: (I see… it’s not a fight to just defeat the opponent.)
[YUZUKI]: “Meaning, if I escape then it counts as the Takeda Army’s victory, right?”
[MASANOBU]: “Yes. Protecting you… In other words, by refusing their requests, we need to show Takeda’s strength. In order to let them know we won’t take their unreasonable demands next time either.”
[MASANOBU]: “It’s not an exaggeration to say that victory depends on you and I. Do you understand now?”
[YUZUKI]: “Yes! I’ll get away no matter what!”
[MASANOBU]: “… Ah, that’s a nice look. I love your determined eyes.”
[YUZUKI]: “… Um.”
Masanobu-san’s smile, but also partly because we were holding hands, made my heart pound deep in my chest.
[YUZUKI]: (I need to concentrate on running away right now.)
[SOLDIER]: “THERE THEY ARE! DON’T LET THE GIRL ESCAPE!”
[MASANOBU]: “They came at once, huh. Let’s hurry. No matter what happens from here, don’t let go of my hand.”
[YUZUKI]: (It’ll be okay because I’m together with Masanobu-san.)
I felt the presence of several soldiers chasing us from behind.
But still, I felt at ease somewhere from the strength Masanobu-san’s hand conveyed.
