Chapter 4: Adversity Tests the Character of a Man

Around the time she started to become accustomed to life in Shinga, a letter from a neighbouring ally arrived.

On the way to negotiations, Masanobu told her there was something only she could do…

Chapter 4.4

[YUZUKI]: “Haa… haa…”

[YUZUKI]: “Masanobu-san, it hurts…”

[MASANOBU]: “Bear with it a while longer. It’ll be over soon.”

.[SOLDIER]: “Dammit, where’d the woman go!?”

[SOLDIER]: “Hey, search over there!”

[MASANOBU]: “… Alright, it seems like they went away. You can come out now.”

[MASANOBU]: “I’m sorry. Although it was to let our pursuers pass by, I stuffed you into the roots of this tree. It was cramped, wasn’t it.”

[YUZUKI]: “N-No, I’m okay. Though it was tiny…”

[YUZUKI]: (I can’t tell Masanobu-san that my heart was pounding the entire time we were pressed up against each other.)

[MASANOBU]: “… What’s the matter? Your face is red, are you alright?”

[YUZUKI]: “Y-Yes. I’m fine!”

[MASANOBU]: “Great. Let’s go then.”

[YUZUKI]: “Haa…! Haa…!”

[MASANOBU]: “Are you alright?”

[YUZUKI]: “Y-Yes! I can still run!”

For the victory of the Takeda Army, it was an unconditional requirement that I escape from my pursuers–

Thinking that, I was able to continue running no matter how painful it was.

[MASANOBU]: “–Wait. Be quiet.”

Masanobu-san’s ears twitched.

Knowing that he must have picked up on some sound, I quietly suppressed my rough breaths until I was barely breathing.

[MASANOBU]: “… I see. It appears that they’ve sent a considerable number of pursuers our way.”

[MASANOBU]: “Well, it’s certainly impossible to compete with Shingen-sama in military force unless you are the Uesugi Army, so they’ve prioritized capturing you.”

[YUZUKI]: “Haa… haa… then we need to run away somehow, don’t we…!”

[MASANOBU]: “Yes. Let’s go without being noticed as much as possible. Though, if this were Masakage or Nobuharu-san, they’d announce themselves and defeat the enemy.”

[MASANOBU]: “This time, I’d like to curb the use of physical exertion as much as possible. This is the cardinal rule of a disengagement battle.”

[YUZUKI]: “Disengagement battle?”

[MASANOBU]: “Yes. A battle in order to escape or withdraw from someone.”

[MASANOBU]: “That’s my specialty, so I am the rear guard… that is to say, in many cases, I stand at the very back and am entrusted with the duty of holding back the enemy.”

[YUZUKI]: “Isn’t that a really dangerous duty…”

[MASANOBU]: “Somewhat. But it’s also an important role. Letting your comrades escape, and not letting anyone die…”

[MASANOBU]: “I fight with those feelings and while thinking frantically about many other things. In a way, it’s the hardest role.”

[MASANOBU]: “But, see, Shingen-sama says this from time to time, doesn’t he? That comrades in Takeda are like family.”

[YUZUKI]: “Ah… now that you mention it, I think I heard that when we first met…”

[YUZUKI]: “Also, Masakage-kun too, talked some time ago about how he connected with everyone like it’s a real family.”

[MASANOBU]: “Yes. To the Takeda Army, your companions are the same as your family. That is precisely why everyone is desperate to protect the others and why it’s worth doing.”

[YUZUKI]: “… That’s a bit surprising.”

[MASANOBU]: “Hm? Surprising?”

[YUZUKI]: “I haven’t seen you fight a lot, Masanobu-san… so I thought you were the type of person to think about strategies and give orders.”

[YUZUKI]: “During training too, you’re often the referee, so to hear that you’re entrusted with such a serious responsibility…”

[MASANOBU]: “Haha, I see. Certainly, my coat is slightly different from the many flashy and loud people we have in the Takeda Army.”

[MASANOBU]: “But I also have a reputation for fighting in disengagement battles. To the extent where I’ve been nicknamed the “Fleeing Danjou”, you see.”

[MASANOBU]: “I believe that is why Shingen-sama chose me to be your escort.”

[YUZUKI]: “That reminds me… speaking of Shingen-san, I wonder how everyone is doing right now.”

[MASANOBU]: “Who knows. But I think they are fighting with urgency.”

[MASANOBU]: “Shingen-sama said this as well, but everyone likes you. Of course, myself included.”

Saying that, Masanobu-san smiled. I felt my own cheeks grow hot and looked away.

[YUZUKI]: “P-Please don’t tease me.”

[MASANOBU]: “No, I wasn’t teasing at all. Ever since you came, the Takeda Army has grown more united.”

[MASANOBU]: “Now you’re an essential person. No one wants to lose you.”

Masanobu-san said this directly with serious eyes.

[YUZUKI]: (I’m really happy to hear that. And yet I…)

[YUZUKI]: (Why am I remembering my old world at a time like this.)

But that was simply something I could not say and so I managed to create a smile.

[YUZUKI]: “… M-Me too, Masanobu-san. I feel the same as everyone.”

[MASANOBU]: “… That’s a lie, isn’t it?”

[YUZUKI]: “Huh?”

[MASANOBU]: “I’m not very conscious of it myself, but… I seem to be sensitive to the subtleties of women.”

[MASANOBU]: “I immediately know things like small changes, confused feelings, or other such things.”

[MASANOBU]: “Hey… it’s not good to hide yourself, you know?”

[MASANOBU]: “Won’t you… tell me your true feelings?”

Saying that, Masanobu-san brought his face closer. Those pupils, which looked at me from nearby, seemed to see through to the depths of my feelings… to everything about me.

[MASANOBU]: “Come on. Tell me what you really feel.”

[YUZUKI]: (W-What do I do. I… I…)

[YUZUKI]: (Arriving in this world, I’ve been saved by Shingen-san.)

[YUZUKI]: (Now I’m needed by everyone as the Takeda Army’s herbalist.)

[YUZUKI]: (Where Shingen-san and the others are is where I belong… they’ve become family.)

[YUZUKI]: (I’m really thankful and I’m happy. But–)

[YUZUKI]: (I also can’t forget my original world. Plus, I want to go home too…)

[MASANOBU]: “… You can’t tell me?”

[YUZUKI]: “……”

[YUZUKI]: (Even now, in order to protect me, Shingen-san and the others are fighting with their lives. To be silent any more than this is…)

Thinking that, I tried to disclose everything but, in that moment, the bushes shook greatly.

[MASANOBU]: “Come beside me!”

[MASANOBU]: “… Oh dear, looks like we got surrounded.”

[SOLDIER]: “Hand that girl over here obediently!”

[MASANOBU]: “That’s too bad. This girl is also important to me.”

[MASANOBU]: “That’s why, if you’re trying to tear the relationship between this girl and us of the Takeda Army, I will not show mercy.”

[MASANOBU]: “… Listen well. No matter what happens from here on, do not leave me.”

[YUZUKI]: “Masanobu-san…”

[MASANOBU]: “Don’t be afraid, but I think that is impossible, so… believe in me.”

[YUZUKI]: “O-Okay.”

[MASANOBU]: “Now, you men, naturally you’ve prepared yourselves, right?”

A cold voice– In a voice that seemed to be frozen from the bottom of his heart, Masanobu-san slowly placed his hand on the handle of his sword while he spoke.

[MASANOBU]: “I will show it to you generously. –The true strength of the Fleeing Danjou.”

(T/N: History time! So, apparently Shingen had 24 legendary generals and 3 of them had the titles “Danjou”, which seems to purely be a title because the literal meaning makes no sense whatsoever. Masanobu was one of them, as explained in this story. He’s known as the Fleeing Danjou for his cool mind, cautious command, and skillful retreats. It has nothing to do with running away often or anything. By the way, the other two are Sanada Yukitaka (Offensive Danjou) and Hoshina Masatoshi (Spear/Vanguard Danjou).

Also, is it just me or does the beginning start off… naughty sounding LOL.)

Also, can someone explain to me about the rankings in the army? There was generals, commanders and supreme commanders, right? But I don’t know the correct order and it always confused me? Are they all supreme commander?🤔😕

It’s likely over simplified in the game but there’s the supreme commander, which I translated as general, and this was the 総大将 (soudaishou; commander of commanders, essentially). The 7 men who lead their respective armies are these supreme commanders/generals.

Then the rest of the guys we know are commanders called 武将 (bushou; military commander) and they have their own units, or basically headed their own division. But they’re all under the command of the supreme commander/general.

If we wanted to get technical then the ranking would probably go supreme commander (soudaishou; 総大将) > general (taishou; 大将) > commander (bushou; 武将).

Thank you! I was having a difficult time trying to think that through

It’s been a long time, but I saw on fandom wiki, basically from opinions, that he’s called the fleeing danjou (commander) because he’s ran away from countless girls in the past who were persistent. Lol! I wonder how much of that is true… 😂

Edit! Well, I forgot to read the Illnoix’s words at the end of thus part. But maybe the danjou part was just a title? I was told he’s called the “run-away” commander in the fandom, but opinions are opinions. Also, I guess fantasy stories are different from reality though it must be true that he’s skilled in retreats.

It could be a mix of everything. It seems like Shingen had a retinue of talented commanders, but since Masanobu is a chick magnet too he may have been pursued by a lot of girls as well |D although I hear that Masanobu and Shingen had a really close and romantic relationship too.

If I could have a boyfriend like Masanobu.. I wish I meet someone who noticed small little things and is considerate :3 His voice and expression while saying something like she won’t tell her feelings to him!… awwww

      Ilinox responded:
      June 17, 2018 at 18:28

RIGHT!? He’s so gentle and nice and his voice when he’s asking her to talk to him is just buwah. I would start crying if someone asked me how I was doing in such a considerate voice and with such patience. Makes me kinda sad that he’s always surrounded by rabid girls LOL and he feels the need to run away when he’s such a nice guy.

[MASANOBU]: “Haha, I see. Certainly, my coat is slightly different from the many flashy and loud people we have in the Takeda Army.”

Heh, you’re plenty flashy, especially because of that soccer mom hat!

[MASANOBU]: “Won’t you… tell me your true feelings?”
[MASANOBU]: “Come on. Tell me what you really feel.”

If we rank the men in terms of the danger they pose for women, Masanobu is definitely waaaaay up there with Kagemochi.
Kagemochi’s the bully, while Masanobu’s the smooth operator…

      Ilinox responded:
      June 17, 2018 at 18:27

I laughed at that line about not being flashy because Masatoyo is in the same boat as him but he doesn’t mention Masatoyo so it’s like Masatoyo got forgotten about… again |D;; oopsies. But that’s so true, not only doe he have that hat, but he also has that stylin’ cape (I love one-shoulder capes). On a side note, I found his use of the idiom there to be so cute because the actual words use the kanji for “fur color” haha.

Gods, I love these smooth men kjfgkhjfh and that reminds me that I still haven’t gotten around to the 4 darkness men and their interaction card. I should also translate one of Masanobu’s card where he has a breakdown because man I gotta admit my appreciation for Masanobu skyrocketed because of that LOL (before that card I had a bit of hesitance towards him cause I kept expecting a darker underside to him, but he’s a gentle smooth operator with soooome teasing while Kagemochi is just a straight up bully in comparison, haha).

I also love one-shoulder capes too! If only Masanobu’s not so pink though…

Yeah, I have to choose between Masanobu and Kagemochi, I’ll definitely choose Masanobu.
I like smooth men because they show great intelligence with their flirting technique…
Not saying that Kagemochi’s not intelligent (though he can be a bit stupid sometimes, especially when you remember what he did in Date’s route…), but with a bully, you never know how far he will go with his teasing… *shudder*

yuki I feel they are probably on par.. both their awakening scenes are @&^#<* but masanobu is more of…I think I may have used the wrong word here.. an exhibitionist? That taking yuzuki's blood behind the screens, though their shadows were illuminated by the moon light.

Masanobu : “I believe that is why Shingen-sama chose me to be your escort.”

Actually, I see a different reason why Shingen choose you to be Yuzuki’s escort, Masanobu (in my imagination lol)

Masanobu : “I’m not very conscious of it myself, but… I seem to be sensitive to the subtleties of women.”
Masanobu : “I immediately know things like small changes, confused feelings, or other such things.”

That’s really… Amazing. I hope I can meet such a man like Masanobu (oops, sorry)

Okay, out of topic for a while. I hope you got the new Masamune *4, since I didn’t get it after spend much crystals for him *sobs* I hope you will share the story…

Ehem, back to topic. Can’t wait the next part~!! Thank you for your hard works~!! ^^

Oh no, haha, Shingen only has pure thoughts about the best person to get MC away– hahaha. Unless I totally misread your statement and just revealed myself to be the one with a dirty mind, oops.

      I didn’t get it either ;;; I only got Kagemochi and Nobuyuki’s 2* ahaha. I’m pretty reserved when it comes for event gachas unless it’s my extreme favorites hjksjfgh gotta always be sure to control myself when it comes to mobage purchases |D;;

just how good are you? kagemochi level?

[MASANOBU]: “Come on. Tell me what you really feel.”

i also like you… and also the other hungry wolf…

anyway. i went to wikipedia. reading info about Kōsaka Masanobu. im not so sure if this place is reliable. but i was bother by the “Bond with Shingen” section. can anyone confirm the reliability? for the satisfaction of my fanatsy or imagination, i’ll rather stick with the game’s version of masanobu

      leohikarusora said:
      June 16, 2018 at 01:35

Kinda confused too in that section, it’s not mentioning about what kind of bond that they’re talking about… I think I gonna search about Kousaka Masanobu in another site…

Ah….I read about that some time ago. I was rather uncomfortable reading about it, but it seems to be a common practice back then. Shudo was… an intimate relationship.
FYI, Nobunaga in the history was in the same kind of relationship with Ranmaru…

        Ilinox responded:
        June 16, 2018 at 09:57

@waterinegirl: Yep, that was real since it cites an letter that was written by Shingen. Here it is in a book about Homosexuality in Tokugawa Japan. The shudo relationship is also detailed a bit more on the wiki entry about military same-sex love. I’m sure, as if often the case, there were instances of this relationship being abused from a lord pressuring a younger man, etc etc, especially since it sounds like they’re rite of passage of learning martial skills, etiquette, and other battlefield stuff. But, at its core, it sounds like it was based on mutual consent, more ritualistic than anything, and a way of uplifting both partners (since they’d be the best they could be).

yukihime03 is also right |D Nobunaga and Ranmaru are a famous example because all instances of Ranmaru in fiction always puts to forefront his loyalty to Nobunaga because of this.
