Chapter 4: Adversity Tests the Character of a Man
Around the time she started to become accustomed to life in Shinga, a letter from a neighbouring ally arrived.
On the way to negotiations, Masanobu told her there was something only she could do…
[YUZUKI]: “Haa… haa…”
[YUZUKI]: “Masanobu-san, it hurts…”
[MASANOBU]: “Bear with it a while longer. It’ll be over soon.”
.[SOLDIER]: “Dammit, where’d the woman go!?”
[SOLDIER]: “Hey, search over there!”
[MASANOBU]: “… Alright, it seems like they went away. You can come out now.”
[MASANOBU]: “I’m sorry. Although it was to let our pursuers pass by, I stuffed you into the roots of this tree. It was cramped, wasn’t it.”
[YUZUKI]: “N-No, I’m okay. Though it was tiny…”
[YUZUKI]: (I can’t tell Masanobu-san that my heart was pounding the entire time we were pressed up against each other.)
[MASANOBU]: “… What’s the matter? Your face is red, are you alright?”
[YUZUKI]: “Y-Yes. I’m fine!”
[MASANOBU]: “Great. Let’s go then.”
[YUZUKI]: “Haa…! Haa…!”
[MASANOBU]: “Are you alright?”
[YUZUKI]: “Y-Yes! I can still run!”
For the victory of the Takeda Army, it was an unconditional requirement that I escape from my pursuers–
Thinking that, I was able to continue running no matter how painful it was.
[MASANOBU]: “–Wait. Be quiet.”
Masanobu-san’s ears twitched.
Knowing that he must have picked up on some sound, I quietly suppressed my rough breaths until I was barely breathing.
[MASANOBU]: “… I see. It appears that they’ve sent a considerable number of pursuers our way.”
[MASANOBU]: “Well, it’s certainly impossible to compete with Shingen-sama in military force unless you are the Uesugi Army, so they’ve prioritized capturing you.”
[YUZUKI]: “Haa… haa… then we need to run away somehow, don’t we…!”
[MASANOBU]: “Yes. Let’s go without being noticed as much as possible. Though, if this were Masakage or Nobuharu-san, they’d announce themselves and defeat the enemy.”
[MASANOBU]: “This time, I’d like to curb the use of physical exertion as much as possible. This is the cardinal rule of a disengagement battle.”
[YUZUKI]: “Disengagement battle?”
[MASANOBU]: “Yes. A battle in order to escape or withdraw from someone.”
[MASANOBU]: “That’s my specialty, so I am the rear guard… that is to say, in many cases, I stand at the very back and am entrusted with the duty of holding back the enemy.”
[YUZUKI]: “Isn’t that a really dangerous duty…”
[MASANOBU]: “Somewhat. But it’s also an important role. Letting your comrades escape, and not letting anyone die…”
[MASANOBU]: “I fight with those feelings and while thinking frantically about many other things. In a way, it’s the hardest role.”
[MASANOBU]: “But, see, Shingen-sama says this from time to time, doesn’t he? That comrades in Takeda are like family.”
[YUZUKI]: “Ah… now that you mention it, I think I heard that when we first met…”
[YUZUKI]: “Also, Masakage-kun too, talked some time ago about how he connected with everyone like it’s a real family.”
[MASANOBU]: “Yes. To the Takeda Army, your companions are the same as your family. That is precisely why everyone is desperate to protect the others and why it’s worth doing.”
[YUZUKI]: “… That’s a bit surprising.”
[MASANOBU]: “Hm? Surprising?”
[YUZUKI]: “I haven’t seen you fight a lot, Masanobu-san… so I thought you were the type of person to think about strategies and give orders.”
[YUZUKI]: “During training too, you’re often the referee, so to hear that you’re entrusted with such a serious responsibility…”
[MASANOBU]: “Haha, I see. Certainly, my coat is slightly different from the many flashy and loud people we have in the Takeda Army.”
[MASANOBU]: “But I also have a reputation for fighting in disengagement battles. To the extent where I’ve been nicknamed the “Fleeing Danjou”, you see.”
[MASANOBU]: “I believe that is why Shingen-sama chose me to be your escort.”
[YUZUKI]: “That reminds me… speaking of Shingen-san, I wonder how everyone is doing right now.”
[MASANOBU]: “Who knows. But I think they are fighting with urgency.”
[MASANOBU]: “Shingen-sama said this as well, but everyone likes you. Of course, myself included.”
Saying that, Masanobu-san smiled. I felt my own cheeks grow hot and looked away.
[YUZUKI]: “P-Please don’t tease me.”
[MASANOBU]: “No, I wasn’t teasing at all. Ever since you came, the Takeda Army has grown more united.”
[MASANOBU]: “Now you’re an essential person. No one wants to lose you.”
Masanobu-san said this directly with serious eyes.
[YUZUKI]: (I’m really happy to hear that. And yet I…)
[YUZUKI]: (Why am I remembering my old world at a time like this.)
But that was simply something I could not say and so I managed to create a smile.
[YUZUKI]: “… M-Me too, Masanobu-san. I feel the same as everyone.”
[MASANOBU]: “… That’s a lie, isn’t it?”
[MASANOBU]: “I’m not very conscious of it myself, but… I seem to be sensitive to the subtleties of women.”
[MASANOBU]: “I immediately know things like small changes, confused feelings, or other such things.”
[MASANOBU]: “Hey… it’s not good to hide yourself, you know?”
[MASANOBU]: “Won’t you… tell me your true feelings?”
Saying that, Masanobu-san brought his face closer. Those pupils, which looked at me from nearby, seemed to see through to the depths of my feelings… to everything about me.
[MASANOBU]: “Come on. Tell me what you really feel.”
[YUZUKI]: (W-What do I do. I… I…)
[YUZUKI]: (Arriving in this world, I’ve been saved by Shingen-san.)
[YUZUKI]: (Now I’m needed by everyone as the Takeda Army’s herbalist.)
[YUZUKI]: (Where Shingen-san and the others are is where I belong… they’ve become family.)
[YUZUKI]: (I’m really thankful and I’m happy. But–)
[YUZUKI]: (I also can’t forget my original world. Plus, I want to go home too…)
[MASANOBU]: “… You can’t tell me?”
[YUZUKI]: (Even now, in order to protect me, Shingen-san and the others are fighting with their lives. To be silent any more than this is…)
Thinking that, I tried to disclose everything but, in that moment, the bushes shook greatly.
[MASANOBU]: “Come beside me!”
[MASANOBU]: “… Oh dear, looks like we got surrounded.”
[SOLDIER]: “Hand that girl over here obediently!”
[MASANOBU]: “That’s too bad. This girl is also important to me.”
[MASANOBU]: “That’s why, if you’re trying to tear the relationship between this girl and us of the Takeda Army, I will not show mercy.”
[MASANOBU]: “… Listen well. No matter what happens from here on, do not leave me.”
[MASANOBU]: “Don’t be afraid, but I think that is impossible, so… believe in me.”
[MASANOBU]: “Now, you men, naturally you’ve prepared yourselves, right?”
A cold voice– In a voice that seemed to be frozen from the bottom of his heart, Masanobu-san slowly placed his hand on the handle of his sword while he spoke.
[MASANOBU]: “I will show it to you generously. –The true strength of the Fleeing Danjou.”
(T/N: History time! So, apparently Shingen had 24 legendary generals and 3 of them had the titles “Danjou”, which seems to purely be a title because the literal meaning makes no sense whatsoever. Masanobu was one of them, as explained in this story. He’s known as the Fleeing Danjou for his cool mind, cautious command, and skillful retreats. It has nothing to do with running away often or anything. By the way, the other two are Sanada Yukitaka (Offensive Danjou) and Hoshina Masatoshi (Spear/Vanguard Danjou).
Also, is it just me or does the beginning start off… naughty sounding LOL.)
