Chapter 5: Don’t Put Off To Tomorrow What You Can Do Today
The party headed to the place in the border zone with Uesugi where Himemiko was said to have descended.
Preparing for the worst case, she assisted Masatoyo with war preparations.
[YUZUKI]: (Errm, maybe I came a bit too early.)
Though I came to the castle gates to meet up with Masatoyo-san, maybe because I was too eager, but it seemed I arrived too early.
[YUZUKI]: (Maybe I should go back inside the castle and look for him… Ah, but I don’t want to accidentally pass him…)
.[MASATOYO]: “Excuse me…”
[YUZUKI]: “Hiyah! M-Masatoyo-san…!? How long have you been here!?”
[MASATOYO]: “Hahaha. Well, nothing can be done about how weak my presence is but, actually, I’ve been here this entire time.”
[YUZUKI]: “I-I’m sorry. I, um…”
[MASATOYO]: “You don’t need to apologize, it’s alright. More importantly, did you sleep well yesterday?”
[YUZUKI]: “About that, um… I might be a bit sleep-deprived. Actually, after our talk, I was too eager to work hard that I couldn’t sleep in the end…”
[MASATOYO]: “Ahaha, it’s good to be proactive. But, if you feel too tired, please tell me.”
And then Masatoyo-san set out towards the castle town and I started walking beside him too.
[YUZUKI]: “So, what are we doing today? I’ll help out with anything!”
[MASATOYO]: “That’s heartening. For today, we’re going to procure army provisions and military medicine.”
[MASATOYO]: “Usually, it’s a task I do alone but, regarding medicine, you are already more skilled and knowledgeable than me. I was thinking you would be of great help.”
[YUZUKI]: (I see… I’m useful to everyone with my medicinal knowledge. I didn’t notice but I’m really happy about that.)
[YUZUKI]: “Masatoyo-san, I’ll do my best! So please let me help out with anything more.”
As Masatoyo-san smiled again beside me, we made our way to the castle town through the tranquil landcsape.
[YUZUKI]: (I need to work really hard for everyone else too!)
When Masatoyo-san and I came to Takeda territory’s castle town, it was lively and bustling today as well, and had a very pleasant atmosphere.
[MASATOYO]: “Now then, we should head to the pharmacy with you here.”
[MASATOYO]: “First we’ll–“
[GIRL]: “Ah, it’s Masatoyo-sama!”
[BOY]: “Yaaaay~, Masatoyo-sama caame~!”
Masatoyo-san tried to walk but a lot of children came running over joyfully from somewhere.
[MASATOYO]: “Hello, everyone. You all look energetic today too.”
That smile was much gentler than usual and, even without putting it in words, it expressed how much he liked children.
As I smiled and thought that while watching Masatoyo-san and the childrens’ interactions, a child suddenly pointed at me and shouted.
And then, as if following that, the other children also looked at me with glittering eyes.
[BOY]: “Ahh! Masatoyo-sama brought a giiiirl with him!”
[GIRL]: “Is she a lover!? Is she Masatoyo-sama’s girlfriend!?”
[BOY]: “Masatoyo-sama has a loveeer!”
[MASATOYO]: “H-Hey now, don’t say rude things.”
Masatoyo-san was blushing. I could feel that my face was instinctively hot too… not knowing how to react, I could only look down.
[MASATOYO]: “This girl is the girl who became Shingen-sama’s herbalist. By no means are we, um… in that kind of relationship…”
[GIRL]: “Masatoyo-sama, your face is reeedd!”
[BOY]: “It really is!!”
[MASATOYO]: “G-Geez, I came for work today. I’ll play with everyone another time!”
[GIRL]: “Ahaha. Masatoyo-sama, you’re fuuunny!”
The children laughed for a while and then went away like a storm. Masatoyo-san and I were left in that spot, still blushing.
[MASATOYO]: “… I-I’m sorry. The children said something rude.”
[YUZUKI]: “N-No, it’s fine.”
I intended to reply to Masatoyo-san while keeping calm but, unable to keep down my inner discomposure, I forcibly changed the topic.
[YUZUKI]: “Still, Masatoyo-san, you’re really close to those children. They’re really attached to you.”
[MASATOYO]: “Yes. Those children don’t have any relatives.”
[MASATOYO]: “Actually, I was also in that same situation when I was young… and then, welcomed into the army by Shingen-sama, I came this far.”
[MASATOYO]: “That’s why, if I could become someone like that to them too, I play with them and look after them whenever I have time.”
[YUZUKI]: “… I see.”
[MASATOYO]: “It might be too much to say I could become like Shingen-sama… but at the very least I thought I could try to imitate that.”
[YUZUKI]: “… Amazing.”
[YUZUKI]: “Because offering a hand like that isn’t something everybody can do.”
[YUZUKI]: “That’s why, Masatoyo-san, you being able to do that… I think it’s amazing.”
[MASATOYO]: “I-It’s not that…”
[GIRL]: “Hyuu hyuu!”
[BOY]: “You guys should just daaate!”
[MASATOYO]: “Ah, h-hey you guys! When did you come back! Play over there!”
Masatoyo-san, who was cautioning the children running away with smiles, seemed somewhat happy.
For some reason, seeing that sight seemed to bring happiness to me–
[MASATOYO]: “N-Now then. Getting back on track, let’s procure the supplies.”
[MASATOYO]: “Because the Takeda army’s future rests on our shoulders.”
[YUZUKI]: “Yes, I’ll do my best!”
