Chapter 6: Man Proposes, God Disposes
Organizing their preparations, they headed towards the border zone with Uesugi at last.
Their opponent was their longtime rival “Uesugi Kenshin”, one that could not be dealt with by ordinary means, and Takeda was to challenge them seriously but… what direction would the match go…!?
That night, after I encountered the Uesugi Kenshin I heard about–
[YUZUKI]: (I wonder if Shingen-san is still angry…)
As I sighed I recalled what happened after Kenshin-san left.
[SHINGEN]: “Now, do you know what I want to say the most?”
[YUZUKI]: “… I’m sorry for acting on my own alone.”
[SHINGEN]: “You heard my voice when I told you not to go alone, right?”
[YUZUKI]: “… Yes.”
[SHINGEN]: “Then! Why did you go alone! BECAUSE OF THAT YOU WERE CAUGHT, YOU KNOW!?”
[SHINGEN]: “Do you fully understand just how much danger you were in!?”
[YUZUKI]: “…… Yes. I-I’m sorry…”
[SHINGEN]: “…… Masakage, Masatoyo.”
[SHINGEN]: “Go with this girl. Don’t let her out of your eyes for even a second!”
[MASATOYO]: “… Are you still troubled?”
[YUZUKI]: “Yes, because… that’s the first time I’ve seen him that angry…”
[MASAKAGE]: “That’s how much he worried about you. The moment he couldn’t see you, Shingen-sama looked around for you really desperately, you know?”
[MASATOYO]: “… Did you want to find a clue to Himemiko-sama that much?”
[MASATOYO]: “… You wish to return home that badly, don’t you?”
[YUZUKI]: “May… be. No, I think you’re right.”
But the box I finally managed to find wasn’t even opened in the end after what happened with Shingen-san.
[MASAKAGE]: “… You know, you and Shingen-sama are similar. Even though you worry tons over people, you completely forget about yourself.”
[MASATOYO]: “Ah~, that’s true.”
[YUZUKI]: “… Masakage-kun, Masatoyo-san, what should I do.”
[MASAKAGE]: “Well, you’ve apologized already, so just be careful next time, no?”
[MASATOYO]: “Yes, exactly. Cherish yourself, alright?”
[YUZUKI]: (But… how should I face him tomorrow…)
[SHINGEN]: “…… Haa, I’ve done it now… How should I face her tomorrow…”
[MASANOBU]: “Now then, this is a problem.”
[NOBUHARU]: “Ha ha ha! It is a problem.”
[SHINGEN]: “… Screw you, you guys aren’t troubled at all. Instead you’re laughing, aren’t you!”
[MASANOBU]: “Are you that worried? That she might hate you.”
[MASANOBU]: “Shingen-sama, what you said to her– that was something that needed to be said to anyone.”
[SHINGEN]: “… But there are ways of saying that. Dammit… why’d I have to shout like that…”
[MASANOBU]: “However, this isn’t the time to be preoccupied only with her.”
[MASANOBU]: “Staying here in this old castle means we will be meeting against the Uesugi army–“
[SHINGEN]: “Yeah. I decided to stay here so that guy doesn’t have to go out of his way to find us. That’s not really a problem.”
[MASANOBU]: “… Are you truly fine?”
[SHINGEN]: “……? Yeah, the deployment of soldiers has been settled already.”
[SHINGEN]: “Haa… I’m going to rest now.”
[MASANOBU]: “… That he’s not conscious of it is the most frightening of all.”
[NOBUHARU]: “But it’s clearly better than being awkwardly conscious. Well, if anything happens, that’s when it’s our turn.”
[MASANOBU]: “… Good grief, I wonder what will happen.”
[YUZUKI]: (… Nngh…)
When I woke up at the sun’s light Masakage-kun and Masatoyo-san were sitting on each side of me.
[MASAKAGE]: “… You’re awake.”
[MASATOYO]: “The day has just broken, so you can still sleep some more, you know?”
[YUZUKI]: “Thank you… but I’m okay. More importantly, you two are up early.”
[MASAKAGE]: “Well, this is around the time I’d be practicing with Nobuharu-san.”
[YUZUKI]: “Ah… I’m sorry. It’s because you were told not to let me out of your sight that…”
[MASAKAGE]: “It’s not just that. We might fight with Uesugi today, so I have to save some energy.”
[MASATOYO]: “Haha, Masakage, you’ve grown. Before, you didn’t care about your injuries at all.”
[MASAKAGE]: “S-Shut up! It’s cause when I’m hurt there’s a person who looks like they’re in pain, even though they’re not the one hurt… ah!”
[YUZUKI]: (Eh… does he mean…)
[???]: “–Hah! Hragh!”
[MASAKAGE]: “Ah… this voice…”
The instant I realized it was Shingen-san’s voice, a sharp pain tore through my chest.
[YUZUKI]: (Why… why does it hurt so much…)
When I held my chest, as if to endure this pain, Masatoyo-san whispered to me gently.
[MASATOYO]: “… You should go. To Shingen-sama.”
[YUZUKI]: “Huh… but…”
[MASAKAGE]: “… That’s right. Go. I said it before but we might fight with Uesugi today. I don’t want to be sent out by a depressing face like that.”
[MASATOYO]: “It’ll be alright. You should speak with Shingen-sama.”
My back was pushed by both their words and I decided to go towards where I heard Shingen-san’s voice.
[SHINGEN]: “Hagh! Hrngh!”
Immediately close to the room I spent the night in was Shingen-san.
I felt somewhat nostaglic at that back that was swinging a wooden sword with intense concentration.
[YUZUKI]: (It was the next day after I spent a night for the first time in Takeda’s castle, wasn’t it… that I saw Shingen-san practicing.)
I felt like a much longer time had passed than the actual number of days I spent under the care of Takeda.
[YUZUKI]: (That’s how natural it’s become to me to be in Takeda’s castle…)
[SHINGEN]: “Hragh! Haagh! –!”
I intended to watch silently, but Shingen-san seemed to notice me and his ears twitched before trembling.
[YUZUKI]: (… Come to think of it, this happened when I watched him train for the first time too.)
At that time, Shingen-san turned around immediately with a smile and walked up to me.
[YUZUKI]: (… Even though he must have noticed me… he’s not turning this way…)
Unable to bear being in this spot, I turned around in silence.
[SHINGEN]: “… Ah… wait!”
I stopped without thinking when I was called. But I didn’t know what kind of expression I should turn around with.
[YUZUKI]: (…… What do I do.)
When I didn’t answer with anything–
Slowly, I realized Shingen-san was coming closer.
His steps had a tentative air and, really slowly, he came just behind me and stopped.
[SHINGEN]: “…… You’re up early.”
[SHINGEN]: “…… Today, I’m probably going to fight with Kenshin.”
[YUZUKI]: “… Yes. I heard from Masakage-kun and the others.”
[SHINGEN]: “…… I’m not taking you along.”
I probably thought he was going to say that. I thought that, but the actual words stabbed deeply into my chest.
[SHINGEN]: “It’ll probably be a select few in this battle with Kenshin. That’s why… I’m going to be leaving Masakage and Masatoyo with you as well.”
[YUZUKI]: “…… The two of them…”
[SHINGEN]: “I’ll be talking to them.”
Masakage-kun said he was preserving his strength in order to fight Uesugi. My heart hurt when I thought about his feelings.
[YUZUKI]: “Is it my fault… that the two of them can’t fight…”
[SHINGEN]: “… No, it’s my selfish wish.”
[SHINGEN]: “The opportunity to go one-to-one against Kenshin doesn’t come by often. So, I’m going to challenge him with my mind and body in the perfect condition.”
[SHINGEN]: “For my body there’s the pills that you made. For my mind… I can fight secure in knowing that your safety is guaranteed.”
[SHINGEN]: “That’s why I’m having you retreat to the security of Takeda’s lands with Masakage and Masatoyo.”
[YUZUKI]: “… But I’m worried about everyone.”
[SHINGEN]: “No matter what you say, it’s not happening. I will order Masakage and Masatoyo to make you retreat by force. Today is the day I’ll make you listen to me absolutely.”
Still, I fought against those words that were told to me without hesitation.
[YUZUKI]: “… I won’t get in anyone’s way, so please!”
[SHINGEN]: “I thought you’d say that…”
After I heard his voice in a whisper, Shingen-san’s arms embraced me from behind.
Shingen-san buried his face in the back of my neck and held me tightly.
[SHINGEN]: “I told you, didn’t I. That I’d like to go home this time without vomiting blood and without injuries. That wasn’t a lie, so.”
Those words were filled with a strong resolve and his hot breaths caressed my neck.
[SHINGEN]: “I promise. I definitely won’t die. I’ll be sure to return home to you in Takeda. So… wait for me.”
I placed my hands that seemed to be trembling on top of Shingen-san’s hands as he held me.
[YUZUKI]: “… Will you really… will you really come home?”
[YUZUKI]: “I’m going to wait, you know? No matter how many days, or months, or even years!”
[SHINGEN]: “Aa. Wait for me. Although, I don’t plan on making you wait that long.”
[SHINGEN]: “If I leave you for such a long time, you’ll get taken away by someone else…”
[YUZUKI]: “… Um, what was that just now?”
[SHINGEN]: “… I said I’d like to stay like this for a while longer.”
[YUZUKI]: (Me too… if I said that, would it be strange…)
Still, I couldn’t help but wish that this calm time could last forever.
(T/N: Honestly, this chapter was where I was like “HELLO? YOU CAN’T TELL ME SHINGEN AND THE MC AREN’T MARRIED!” lmao. But yelling Shingen ;w; that was scary.)
