Chapter 6: Man Proposes, God Disposes
Organizing their preparations, they headed towards the border zone with Uesugi at last.
Their opponent was their longtime rival “Uesugi Kenshin”, one that could not be dealt with by ordinary means, and Takeda was to challenge them seriously but… what direction would the match go…!?
Several days had passed since I left the old castle before Shingen-san and the others finally came home.
Unbearably happy, I went to greet them but what I saw was a limp Shingen-san.
[MASANOBU]: “An episode occurred, get some medicine!”
[NOBUHARU]: “Masakage, help me! We’re carrying Shingen to his room.”
Everyone started moving hectically. Meanwhile, I–
[MASANOBU]: “Can you move? I’d like your help.”
[MASANOBU]: “He might get a fever due to exhaustion. Prepare some medicine immediately.”
I nodded while somehow managing to resist crying.
Three days later– I visited Shingen-san’s room in the morning as usual.
[YUZUKI]: “Good morning. How is your body today?”
[SHINGEN]: “Yo. I’m fine, the fever… well, it’s gone down.”
[YUZUKI]: “Don’t be like that. When your recovering is when it’s the most dangerous.”
[YUZUKI]: “Today is also this one… and this. Please take them.”
[SHINGEN]: “Yeah, yeah. Pills, huh.”
Shingen-san showed a wry smile but he firmly took the medicine.
[SHINGEN]: “Thanks for doing this every day. Because of your pills, I could compete with Kenshin to my heart’s content.”
[YUZUKI]: “You competed too much! I heard, you know, that you fought for an entire day.”
[SHINGEN]: “Ahaha, he really is strong. I cornered him many times but couldn’t win.”
[SHINGEN]: “I should have expected it of the man I need to surpass.”
[YUZUKI]: (… How strange. When he’s talking about Kenshin, who should be his enemy, he’s enjoying himself a lot.)
[YUZUKI]: (It almost makes me think they’re actually good friends…)
After I made sure Shingen-san finished taking his medicine, I stood up to return to my work as a herbalist.
[YUZUKI]: “Now then, I’ll come back again at noon.”
[SHINGEN]: “Ah, wait. Um… I need to talk to you.”
[YUZUKI]: “What about?”
I tried to sit down again but Shingen-san patted his own knees.
[SHINGEN]: “Won’t you… come over here?”
[YUZUKI]: “Ah… okay.”
When I settled myself down on the spot I was told, an arm went around my back and I was suddenly pulled into an embrace.
[YUZUKI]: (–… Eh?)
Shingen-san grinned while I was shocked at the sudden action.
[SHINGEN]: “There was a promise, wasn’t there. Between me and you.”
Shingen-san’s other hand gently cradled my cheek.
[SHINGEN]: “…… I’m home.”
I was suddenly told the words I wanted to hear and for an instant my mind became blank.
[YUZUKI]: “I-It’s already been three days since you came home, you know?”
[SHINGEN]: “Haha, my bad, my bad. I was fine up to drawing a tie with Kenshin, but I didn’t think I’d collapse on the way home.”
[YUZUKI]: “You’re talking as if it was someone else…”
[SHINGEN]: “More importantly… don’t you have something to say to me?”
[YUZUKI]: “Yes, of course. I know.”
I placed my own hand on top of Shingen-san’s hand that was against my cheek.
[YUZUKI]: “Welcome home, Shingen-san.”
[SHINGEN]: “… Aah, that’s nice. With this I feel like I’m back home.”
And then, as we both laughed, we heard someone clearing their throat outside the room.
[???]: “Ahem! Umm, is it okay to come in now?”
[YUZUKI]: (Huh? This voice, it can’t be…)
Shingen-san and I hurriedly separated and tried to correct our posture but it was too late.
[MASAKAGE]: “Shingen-sama! Just because you came back home after a long time, don’t you think you’re being a little too close!?”
[MASAKAGE]: “I want to, um… with her… erm…”
[SHINGEN]: “W-What! If you have something to say then say it clearly!”
[MASANOBU]: “Then I’ll go ahead and say it.”
[MASANOBU]: “Even if it is you, Shingen-sama, when it comes to this girl even I don’t feel that good about this.”
[MASATOYO]: “Mm… me too.”
[SHINGEN]: “W-What’s with you guys. Don’t look so scary, okay?”
[NOBUHARU]: “Fuhahaha. Good grief, you’re a calamitous woman.”
[YUZUKI]: “C-Calamitous, that’s a bit…”
[SHINGEN]: “Ahem, ahem!! Uh, more importantly, you guys came here because you had business, right?”
[SHINGEN]: “It wasn’t because you guys like eavesdropping, right.”
[MASATOYO]: “Certainly, we came because there was something but…”
[MASAKAGE]: “Because you were doing thaaat stuff, Shingen-sama, we couldn’t get it out!”
[MASANOBU]: “Well, nothing can be done with something that’s passed. More importantly, Masatoyo, please give the document in particular to Shingen-sama.”
[SHINGEN]: “… Document?”
[MASATOYO]: “Yes. You see, something came to mind, and so I looked into the documents we had in the castle.”
[SHINGEN]: “Something came to mind… about what?”
[MASATOYO]: “About the important item related to Himemiko-sama at the old castle– it appears to be called a sacred treasure.”
[SHINGEN]: “Sacred treasure… ah, I feel like I’ve heard that name before…”
[SHINGEN]: “Come to think of it, didn’t you find something at the old castle?”
[YUZUKI]: “Ah, yes. This is the perfect time so I’ll bring it right now!”
[YUZUKI]: “Sorry to keep everyone waiting, it’s this.”
[YUZUKI]: (Hehe. Shingen-san’s come home safely and he’s healthier now so it’s finally time to open this!)
I opened it with a pounding heart and inside was a necklace.
[SHINGEN]: “… It’s kinda dirty.”
[YUZUKI]: “I’m sure it’ll be pretty once we polish it.”
I picked up the necklace to wipe it off. In that moment–
[YUZUKI]: “Wah!! It’s shining!?”
When the light settled, the rusty and blackened necklace regained a sparkle as if it were good as new.
[MASATOYO]: “It’s become lovely. How mysterious…”
[SHINGEN]: “Can we… think of this as the real thing?”
[MASANOBU]: “Yes, most probably.”
[MASAKAGE]: “You’ve done it, Shingen-sama! Isn’t this gonna be a great force to our army!?”
[SHINGEN]: “Hey, hey. This is a clue to get Yuzuki back home, you know? It’s not a war tool.”
[SHINGEN]: “We’re going to accomplish unifying the country through our own strength. Right?”
[MASAKAGE]: “You’re right! Let’s do that for sure!”
[SHINGEN]: “Yeah… that’s why I don’t mind if you stay here and depend on us one hundred percent.”
[YUZUKI]: “Haha, okay.”
[YUZUKI]: (… I’m glad it was Shingen-san and the others that I met in this world.)
[YUZUKI]: (Alright. I’ll do my best together with everyone again starting from tomorrow–)
[YUZUKI]: “…? What’s wrong, Nobuharu-san?”
[NOBUHARU]: “Ah, nothing. I felt a murderous intent from outside the window, but…”
[YUZUKI]: “M-Murderous intent!?”
[NOBUHARU]: “Fuhaha, relax. It seems I was imagining it.”
[NOBUHARU]: “However, there is no harm in being vigilant.”
[NOBUHARU]: “You’ve obtained Himemiko-sama’s sacred treasure. There’s a possibility unscrupulous fellows will come close, so be cautious.”
[YUZUKI]: (Nobuharu-san said it was his imagination, but… I wonder what it was?)
[YUZUKI]: (Anyway, for myself and for everyone… I need to focus.)
