Chapter 10: All Worldly Things are Transitory
Several days after entering into an alliance with the Uesugi army, Shingen, who returned to the castle, seemed to be deep in thought about something.
While everyone tried to guess at his inmost thoughts, the words spoken from Shingen’s mouth had a premonition of further war…
After I came back from the teahouse, I sat alone on the veranda and looked at the satchet I was given by Shingen-san in the cave when we were chased by yakuma.
[YUZUKI]: (It doesn’t smell much anymore.)
Even though it had a nice smell just from sitting in the palm of my hand when I received it from Shingen-san, now there was no smell even when I brought my nose close.
[YUZUKI]: (That shows just how many days have passed since I came to Shinga, huh.)
[YUZUKI]: (… I wonder what everyone’s doing right now.)
The faces of my family and friends floated across my mind. I was sure they were worried about my disappearance.
The moment my heart hurt with sadness, remembering my old world, I heard a bright voice from behind.
[SHINGEN]: “Oh, what, you still have that?”
[YUZUKI]: “…! Shingen-san…!”
Shingen-san tilted his head at my surprise from being called out to suddenly.
[SHINGEN]: “Why are you so surprised? You’re the one who called me here.”
[YUZUKI]: “Ah… right. Um, I’m sorry when you’re so busy with things.”
[SHINGEN]: “Nah, it’s fine, since I’ve settled things up to a point. Besides, I happened to want to talk to you too.”
[YUZUKI]: “Shingen-san, you too?”
[SHINGEN]: “Yeah… Here, this is for you.”
Saying that, what Shingen-san held out was a cute satchet.
[YUZUKI]: “Huh… this is…”
[SHINGEN]: “It was a long time ago when I made that satchet, so there’s no smell anymore, right? That’s why I went to buy a new one.”
[SHINGEN]: “… Could it be that you don’t want it?”
Shingen-san showed a sad expression when I didn’t take it and just stared at the held out satchet.
[YUZUKI]: “T-that’s not it! Um…”
I hurriedly shook my head and took out a satchet with a calm color.
[YUZUKI]: “Actually, today I bought a satchet in the castle town too. I was thinking it’d be thanks for how you saved me in battle the other day.”
[YUZUKI]: (I bought one that’s easy to wear and after asking Masanobu-san and Masatoyo-san for Shingen-san’s favorite scent, but…)
Still, I was a little worried over whether he would like it or not.
Shingen-san looked at the satchet I presented with round eyes.
[YUZUKI]: (Does he not want it? Maybe it would have been better if I got something else…)
The moment I thought that Shingen-san gave a loud laugh.
[SHINGEN]: “Hahah! Isn’t it nice to have thought of the same thing.”
[SHINGEN]: “Then, let’s exchange.”
[YUZUKI]: “Ah, yes…!”
[YUZUKI]: (I’m glad he’s accepting it happily. But, for some reason, I’m a little embarrassed.)
To try and calm my restless feelings at the embarrassment of having exchanged satchets, I sniffed the satchet I received.
[YUZUKI]: “Ah… this is the same smell as the one I bought.”
Although the bag itself was different, the smell was certainly the same as the one I bought for Shingen-san.
At my words Shingen-san also brought his nose to his satchet.
[SHINGEN]: “Looks like it.”
Shingen-san smiled gently without warning and my heart skipped a beat.
[YUZUKI]: (I was sure he’d laugh it off like he did earlier…)
[SHINGEN]: “Hm? What’s wrong?”
[YUZUKI]: “N-nothing…! Erm…”
I couldn’t speak honestly and just when I was wondering how to gloss over this moment the fragrance from the satchet tickled my nose.
[YUZUKI]: (What a nice smell… I understand why Shingen-san likes it.)
Feeling my nervous body relax, my mouth naturally smiled.
[YUZUKI]: “This satchet has a really nice smell, doesn’t it. I love it.”
[SHINGEN]: “… Jeez, don’t make that kind of face in front of the others.”
Shingen-san mumbled something quietly as he averted his eyes from me and scratched his cheek.
[YUZUKI]: (Is it my imagination or is Shingen-san’s face a little red…?)
[SHINGEN]: “… Well, if you like it I’m glad then. You can forget your worries if it’s a smell you like.”
Shingen-san cleared his throat and then looked at me with serious eyes.
[SHINGEN]: “We’re going to head to Mouri territory from here. I can’t say that place will definitely be safe. But…”
[SHINGEN]: “Whatever happens, I’ll be sure to protect you. So, don’t worry.”
[YUZUKI]: (He noticed that I was worried about going to Mouri’s territory…)
And to try and put me at ease, even just a little, he bought the satchet.
[YUZUKI]: “… Thank you, Shingen-san. I’ll cherish this satchet.”
[SHINGEN]: “Good… I need to thank you too. I’ll treasure this.”
[YUZUKI]: (… A lot of things happened today, huh.)
I was given training by Nobuharu-san and Masakage-kun.
I was surprised about Mouri and meeting Himemiko-sama, and then I was happy at being invited to tea with Masanobu-san and Masatoyo-san.
Then I was given a satchet by Shingen-san.
[YUZUKI]: (Like I thought, I want to be useful to Shingen-san and the others.)
Not as thanks for being in their care. I strongly thought about how I simply wanted to do something for everyone.
[YUZUKI]: (What I’m able to do is just a few things, but I think there’s things only I can do.)
[YUZUKI]: (I’m going to use my blood, the power to make the sacred treasures react, and everything for everyone’s sake.)
If I did that then surely a peaceful Shinga which Himemiko-sama wished for would be returned—
