Chapter 10: A Thousand Mixed Complications
The commanders are shaken by the order, announced suddenly from Kenshin, to invade the Oda and Toyotomi territories.
What is Kenshin’s real intention when he remains silent and does not try to speak…?
[KENSHIN]: “There is nothing to discuss.”
Kenshin-san was cold towards Kagekatsu-kun who came to his room, saying he wished to talk.
[KAGEKATSU]: “Please just answer… one thing…”
[KAGEKATSU]: “This war… is there honor in it?”
.[KAGEKATSU]: “… Is this a just battle…?”
[KENSHIN]: “… There is honor.”
[KENSHIN]: “Kagekatsu, you asked for one answer only.”
Kenshin-san glanced over at me but closed his mouth on that note.
[YUZUKI]: (I’m the one who suggested a talk, but instead it widened the trench between the two…)
I felt that Kenshin-san’s words were baffling, although I was also apologetic.
[YUZUKI]: (Kenshin-san… he seems to be hiding something…?)
[KAGEKATSU]: “Father, before you said this… didn’t you… that the next general… should make decisions by their own will…”
[KENSHIN]: “… Yes.”
[KAGEKATSU]: “Then… I’m going to do that.”
Leaving behind those meaningful words, Kagekatsu-kun left the room.
[KENSHIN]: “This conversation is concluded. You will withdraw as well. I have war preparations to make.”
[YUZUKI]: “… Okay.”
I exited the room at Kenshin-san’s peremptory words and ran after Kagekatsu-kun.
[YUZUKI]: “Hey, Kagekatsu-kun!”
When I caught up to Kagekatsu-kun, I hurriedly called him to a stop.
[YUZUKI]: “Just now, you said that you were going to decided by your own will, right?”
[YUZUKI]: “What did you mean… with that?”
[KAGEKATSU]: “… Exactly as it means.”
[KAGEKATSU]: “… May I ask you one thing?”
[KAGEKATSU]: “If… if I wasn’t a Uesugi commander anymore…”
[KAGEKATSU]: “Would you… come with me…?”
[YUZUKI]: (By that Kagekatsu-kun means…)
At those words I understood clearly what Kagekatsu-kun was going to decide on.
Kagekatsu-kun waited for my answer, looking at me with eyes that seemed to cling.
[YUZUKI]: (Going together with Kagekatsu-kun means leaving Kenshin-san…)
[YUZUKI]: (But… I still want to believe in Kenshin-san…)
[KAGEKATSU]: “Sorry… for asking a strange thing… Forget it…”
Kagekatsu-kun seemed to have guessed something when I didn’t give an answer back and he averted his eyes before walking away.
[YUZUKI]: (Kagekatsu-kun is leaving Uesugi…?)
[YUZUKI]: (If that happens…)
The Uesugi army, which should have been united as one under Kenshin-san’s resolution would—
My heart felt blocked with the concerns of the army becoming scattered.
[YUZUKI]: (What should I do—)
[IMARI]: “Found you at last…”
[YUZUKI]: “Imari-kun… Sorry for leaving you back there.”
I crouched a little and picked up Imari-kun. Strangely, his warmth weakened my concerns.
[YUZUKI]: (This isn’t the time to be depressed, huh…)
[YUZUKI]: (I couldn’t do anything between Kenshin-san and Kagekatsu-kun alone.)
[YUZUKI]: (But… I can find friends who will help me…!)
As I petted Imari-kun I steadily regained my positive feelings.
[YUZUKI]: (People who have spent a long time with Kenshin-san might understand his thoughts…)
I started walking while thinking that.
The first person I found was Kagie-san, who was tending to the horses.
[KAGEIE]: “Yo, it’s you. What’s wrong?”
Kageie-san was working busily but he paused and greeted me.
[YUZUKI]: (It’s a little hard to ask Kageie-san when he’s preparing for war in such high spirits, but…)
[YUZUKI]: “Um… Kageie-san, do you know why Kenshin-san told us to start preparing for war?”
[KAGEIE]: “Nope. I still don’t know.”
Kageie-san shook his head easily.
[KAGEIE]: “But there’s no mistake in Kenshin-sama’s thoughts.”
[KAGEIE]: “You think so too, right?”
[YUZUKI]: “… Right.”
Looked at by Kageie-san’s eyes, which held no doubts, I nodded without thought.
[KAGEIE]: “Haha, that’s what I thought!”
I saw how happy Kageie-san seemed to be from hearing my reply and felt a sharp pain in my heart, like I had told a lie.
[YUZUKI]: “Sorry, excuse me…”
I took my leave from Kageie-san as if I was running away.
