Chapter 10: A Thousand Mixed Complications
The commanders are shaken by the order, announced suddenly from Kenshin, to invade the Oda and Toyotomi territories.
What is Kenshin’s real intention when he remains silent and does not try to speak…?
[KAGEMOCHI]: “… Pardon me.”
[KENSHIN]: “What is the matter?”
[KAGEMOCHI]: “There looks to be a storm and so I am closing the window. Please bear with this temporarily.”
[YUZUKI]: “… Excuse me.”
When I entered the room, Kenshin-san’s brows moved slightly.
[KENSHIN]: “… What did you come for.”
[YUZUKI]: “I’d like to ask something.”
[KENSHIN]: “I am currently busy. Ask me later.”
[YUZUKI]: “Then I’ll wait until you’re done.”
I sat on my heels on the tatami and waited patiently. After a while…
[KENSHIN]: “… What is it you wish to ask?”
[YUZUKI]: “Why are we attacking the allied armies of Oda and Toyotomi?”
[KENSHIN]: “… That is not something I need to talk to you about.”
[YUZUKI]: “I won’t move from here until you talk.”
[KENSHIN]: “… Do as you please.”
Kenshin-san said that and stood up. However, the sliding screen wouldn’t open no matter how much he pulled.
[KENSHIN]: “… I see. Kagemochi’s suggestion?”
Kenshin-san sat down again along with an exasperated sigh.
[KENSHIN]: “Then… you may stay there as long as you please.”
[YUZUKI]: (I was lucky enough to have Kagemochi-san give his help, so I definitely have to get an answer we can accept…)
[YUZUKI]: (If I don’t do my best here then Kagekatsu-kun will…)
When I was assaulted by hopeless feelings of anxiety, the sliding screen suddenly opened.
[KAGEKATSU]: “Excuse my… intrusion.”
I turned my body to the voice just to see Kagekatsu-kun come in.
For some reason Kagekatsu-kun’s eyes widened greatly as if in surprise when he looked over here.
[KAGEKATSU]: “Why are you crying…”
I didn’t notice until he mentioned it, but my cheeks were wet.
[YUZUKI]: “Huh… what is this.”
[KENSHIN]: “… What’s wrong?”
[YUZUKI]: “N-No… this isn’t… it’s…”
I wiped my cheeks impatiently with my fingers, but my tears overflowed one after another.
They were my worries about not being able to see Kenshin-san’s heart and how Kagekatsu-kun might leave Uesugi…
[YUZUKI]: (What do I do, they won’t stop…)
[KAGEKATSU]: “Are you okay?”
The moment I felt a warm hand touch my cheek Kagekatsu-kun gently wiped my tears.
[YUZUKI]: “Mm. Thank you…”
[KAGEKATSU]: “Father…! What did you say… to her? Why is she crying?”
[KENSHIN]: “… I do not know either.”
Kenshin-san answered that with a slightly bewildered appearance.
[KENSHIN]: “… Does it hurt anywhere?”
It was Kenshin-san’s gentle voice, which I hadn’t heard for a while.
I couldn’t hold back the feelings I was suppressing at those concerned words.
[YUZUKI]: “It’s because… Kenshin-san, you’ve been acting strangely… and you won’t say anything…”
The instant he heard my words Kagekatsu-kun sent a strong gaze towards Kenshin-san. And then Kagekatsu-kun spoke, as if snapping at him.
[KAGEKATSU]: “She’s right…! Father, you haven’t said anything… to us…!”
[KENSHIN]: “… I see. You and Kagemochi too… everyone is uneasy.”
[KENSHIN]: “… I apologize.”
[KENSHIN]: “… I will explain it properly. The reason for starting a war.”
Kenshin-san said that and brought out the small box he had quickly hid from me some time ago.
[KENSHIN]: “After the Date army left Uesugi territory, this was sent to me.”
[KENSHIN]: “Those men were searching for clues to Himemiko, as we thought… and what they seemed to have found was this.”
Kagekatsu-kun, who was looking at the small box, opened his mouth in a sudden realization.
[KAGEKATSU]: “This family crest… is it the Mouri army’s seal case…!?”
[YUZUKI]: (The Mouri army…?)
[KENSHIN]: “Yes. And, if Date Masamune’s words are true, the Mouri army is holding onto crucial information regarding Himemiko. Or perhaps…”
[KENSHIN]: “They may already have Himemiko in their hands.”
[KENSHIN]: “Yes. And it is likely that Oda and Toyotomi formed an alliance…”
[KENSHIN]: “Not to come and attack here, but to invade Mouri.”
Kenshin-san said that and looked between Kagekatsu-kun and me.
[KENSHIN]: “Those men… intend to obtain Himemiko.”
[YUZUKI]: “…! Then… Kenshin-san, when you said we were going to attack the allied Oda and Toyotomi armies…”
[KENSHIN]: “Correct. It is to stop the vampires from obtaining the power of Himemiko.”
[YUZUKI]: (…! This is… the reason Kenshin-san said we would start a war…)
It was to prevent Oda and Toyotomi from uniting the country with Himemiko-sama’s power.
And it was to crush the possibility of them exposing Uesugi’s people to the threat of an invasion with that power.
[YUZUKI]: (Kenshin-san’s words are certainly just…)
I felt that all my swelling concerns were erased cleanly.
