Chapter 2: Hostilities
The war of allied armies began at last—
Hideyoshi and the others readied their preparations to intercept the Takeda army. However, something unexpected interrupted…?
Dawn rose on the long, long night and at last the war began—
[TOSHIIE]: “Alrighty, it’s time.”
Finishing the last confirmation of the plan, Toshiie-san gallantly jumped onto his horse.
[YUZUKI]: “Toshiie-san, take care.”
[TOSHIIE]: “Yeah! Hideyoshi, I’m heading out.”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “Mm. I’ll go soon too.”
[TOSHIIE]: “Haha! If you don’t come quickly then I’ll grab all the achievements!”
[TOSHIIE]: “—Great. Everyone, LET’S GO!”
Together with Toshiie-san’s high-spirited voice, his troops began to move out.
Finally, the war between two allied forces started—
Soon after the war began, messengers from every squad began to enter and leave the main camp in a hurry.
Hideyoshi-san and Mitsunari-san scrutinized each and every one of those reports from right beside me.
[MITSUNARI]: “—Per our strategy, Toshiie has pulled the front of the allied force on this side.”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “The Date army’s also— no problem. That reminds me, a messenger also came from the Oda army just now.”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “It said that after our enemy’s formation is drawn away, Toyotomi for Takeda and Oda for Uesugi, the Date army will be acting as a mobile unit.”
[MITSUNARI]: “Yes. It appears the contents of our proposal were accepted as they were.”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “Wow, it was worth taking the risk to be selfish. I spoke about the compatibility of our opponents yesterday, but to think it’d become exactly like that.”
[MITSUNARI]: “Please keep that to a minimum, or changing movements may come to our side.”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “Ahaha, only for now. Anyway, how’s Kanbee and Hanbee?”
[MITSUNARI]: “As planned, they are looking at progress reports and fine-tuning the placement of soldiers at Toshiie’s rear.”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “I see. I’ll leave that to the two of them then and I should get going now.”
[YUZUKI]: “Hideyoshi-san!… Are you really going to do it?”
During the time I went ahead to sleep, it seemed to be decided that Hideyoshi-san would personally act as bait to attract the enemy general—
[HIDEYOSHI]: “Don’t worry. I’m meeting up with Toshiie and, if anything happens, either Kanbee or Hanbee are in a position to come running.”
[MITSUNARI]: “However, just in case, how about keeping a matchlock unit by your side?”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “Hrmmm… I still want to keep this hidden ball trick though. Just the ball in the gun.”
[MITSUNARI]: “This isn’t the time for a joke!”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “No, no, no. It’s because it’s this time that we need to be relaxed.”
Hideyoshi-san straddled the horse that the soldiers brought and turned back to me and Mitsunari just once.
[HIDEYOSHI]: “Mitsunari, I’m entrusting her to you.”
[MITSUNARI]: “Understood. I will protect her with my life. I pray for your fortune in war—“
[YUZUKI]: “Hideyoshi-san, be careful.”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “Thanks! Now then, let’s go everyone! We’re gonna clearly show those allied armies the strength of the Toyotomi army!”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “Toshiie, how’s the situation? It doesn’t look like it’s a free-for-all yet.”
[TOSHIIE]: “Hideyoshi! Right in time. Just now, Kanbee said he found Takeda Shingen!”
[TOSHIIE]: “Hanbee looks like he adjusted the placement of the front line to guide Takeda Shingen’s advance to here.”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “Like I expected. Those two work fast.”
[HIDEYOSHI]: “Well then, why don’t we also go to the fixed location and meet Takeda Shingen?”
T/N: I think Hideyoshi was making a pun up there because he uses 隠し玉 (kakushidama; hidden ball trick, ace up one’s sleeve) and the 玉 (tama; ball) is actually how you’d read the word he uses later which is 弾 (tama; bullet). So, uh, I tried my best here but his pun game is so strong that I got lost too LOL. Like hidden ball… bullet…
