Chapter 2: In These Eventful and Critical Times
The war began at last. In the middle of the coalitions clashing, Kenshin confronted Nobunaga.
In a tense atmosphere, a battle unfolded between the two. However, bad news was brought there…
During this long time, as I listened to the sounds of shouts and attacks that didn’t subside, it seemed like it became a free-for-all melee with no end in sight.
[YUZUKI]: (Everyone’s fighting, so I need to do something to at least help a little too.)
I looked around the area for whether there was something I could do or not and the sight of soldiers enduring the pain of their wounds entered my eyes.
[YUZUKI]: (If it’s treating injuries, I can do that, and I’m certain there was a medicine box here—)
I took out a medicine box from the supplies that were set aside and ran over to the soldiers.
[YUZUKI]: (There’s no more bandages— If I remember correctly, there should be supply refills over there…)
However, right after that, I heard the scream of a soldier and saw his figure collapse with a loud noise.
The moment I noticed that abnormal event an enemy soldier came right in front of me immediately.
[YUZUKI]: (I’m going to be killed…!)
I instinctively closed my eyes out of terror, but an impact didn’t come and instead I heard a voice which seemed relieved.
[KAGEKATSU]: “… Made… it.”
[YUZUKI]: “Kagekatsu-kun! And Kanetsugu-san too—“
[KANETSUGU]: “Jeez, we can’t drop our guard for a split second… Here, can you stand?”
[YUZUKI]: “Yes, thank you very much.”
I took Kanetsugu-san’s hand and stood up before I realized the two had choppy breathing.
[YUZUKI]: (The two of them… have been fighting all this time.)
[YUZUKI]: (There’s a lot of enemies here too and I know there’s no time to rest, but I wonder if their bodies will be okay…)
[YUZUKI]: “Both of you aren’t hurt…?”
[KAGEKATSU]: “Mm, we’re okay… You?”
[YUZUKI]: “I’m fine.”
So that my inner worries wouldn’t be realized, I intended to say that in a voice as energetic as I could make it, but I was seen through by Kanetsugu-san right away.
[KANETSUGU]: “If you can still afford to act tough then looks like you’re alright.”
[KANETSUGU]: “Kagekatsu, we’ll protect this place even if we have to die!”
[KAGEKATSU]: “Yes… I won’t let the enemy get close to you.”
[YUZUKI]: (Even if they have to die…)
Please don’t say that— those words didn’t come out, and I could only just stay silent and see them both off.
[NOBUNAGA]: “… For a time to come where I cross blades with you.”
Nobunaga showed a cruel smile while they exchanged blows with one another.
[KENSHIN]: “Nobunaga, what is it that is in Mouri territory?”
[NOBUNAGA]: “Hn… I need not tell someone such as you.”
[KENSHIN]: (… Oda Nobunaga, for him to lack any openings to this extent.)
When Kenshin looked around the area it seemed that the number of soldiers in each army had decreased greatly because of the long war and the remaining soldiers were already fighting with only their willpower.
From this point on it would be a battle of attrition— but the instant Kenshin thought that the Sanada army, which was forced into inferior numbers, was reflected into his eyes.
[KENSHIN]: (Indeed, so the open hole wasn’t able to be stopped… However, I cannot stand by and overlook this.)
Kenshin took some distance from Nobunaga, in order to assist the Sanada army, but unexpected words came to his ears.
[NOBUNAGA]: “Was Sanada Nobuyuki your instigation?”
[KENSHIN]: “… What?”
[NOBUNAGA]: “That man, even while saying he would surrender to this Nobunaga…”
[NOBUNAGA]: “… Behold.”
At the end of Nobunaga’s line of sight was a shadow that ran over to the disadvantaged Sanada army.
[KENSHIN]: (Sanada Nobuyuki… He’s returned…! The Sanada army should be alright with this.)
[RANMARU]: “Nobunaga-sama! Nobuyuki seems to have betrayed us!”
[NOBUNAGA]: “… I know.”
[KENSHIN]: “!! Knowing he would betray you, why did you accept Nobuyuki…”
[NOBUNAGA]: “I thought he would be useful to a small extent, nothing more.”
[KENSHIN]: “So that ruthlessness is what makes you the Great Demon King of the Sixth Heaven. In that case—“
The moment he tried to continue his words he noticed something unusual about the commotion of his surroundings up to now.
Kenshin looked over the current progress of war once again and the extreme severity of each army’s exhaustion was spread even more so than before.
[KENSHIN]: (Could this happen to be…)
T/N: I love the additional details each army’s perspective gives, especially when we’re seeing the same scenes. Now we know why Kenshin kept looking away in the Oda chapters. Interestingly enough, he didn’t get shot this time LOL. And, huh, I guess Nobuyuki’s disappearance DID do something…
