Chapter 2: Walking on Eggshells

Shingen and the others advanced while cutting down the enemy soldiers. Exchanging a bout with Hideyoshi and the others, they moved forward aiming to join up with the forces of their allies.

There the figure of a single man appeared…

Chapter 2.3

The direction Masakage indicated— there was the figure of Hideyoshi, the Toyotomi army general.

[SHINGEN]: “… To appear and show off like this. Looks like he’s inviting us, but… there’s no reason to retreat here!”

[SHINGEN]: “Let’s go!”

With Shingen at the head, he and Takeda’s commanders advanced resolutely towards Hideyoshi.

Shingen pulled out his sword and in the instant he tried to cut Hideyoshi—

[SHINGEN]: “—Kgh! An ambush…!?”

Shingen caught the blade, which abruptly appeared, with his own sword. After a second, where sparks scattered, the assassin’s blade moved away.

[SHINGEN]: “That spear… Maeda Toshiie, right?”

[TOSHIIE]: “Che, looks like a general’s head really isn’t that easy to take.”

[HIDEYOSHI]: “We just needed a little bit more, too bad.”

[MASAKAGE]: “How dare you… You’ve got some guts wanting Shingen-sama’s head!”

Masakage attacked Toshiie with his dual blades, throwing himself into anger. The spear and blades clashed and a shrill sound echoed.

[TOSHIIE]: “Oh, you wanna go? Alright, I’ll knock you down first!”

[TOSHIIE]: “Haaaah!!”

[MASAKAGE]: “—Ggh! Doraagh!!”

[TOSHIIE]: “!! Ooh… you’re pretty good for being so small.”

[MASAKAGE]: “Hah, don’t look down on me just because I’m small!!”

[HIDEYOSHI]: “Oh? That guy’s not bad.”

[SHINGEN]: “Your spearman’s skilled too, just as the rumors say.”

[SHINGEN]: “So, isn’t it cowardly to ambush me on purpose?”

[HIDEYOSHI]: “Huh? I don’t want to hear that from you guys when you sent a spy over here.”

[SHINGEN]: “… Spy?”

[HIDEYOSHI]: “That’s right. That one called Nobuyuki, he’s your friend, right?”

[HIDEYOSHI]: “He said he wanted to be our comrade, yet the moment the war happened he returned to his original army.”

[SHINGEN]: “… Heh, so that guy went back to the Sanada army.”

[HIDEYOSHI]: “Because we suffered such a serious blow, I need to return it to you, right?”

It happened the moment Hideyoshi pointed his sword at Shingen. Soldiers of the Oda and Toyotomi armies rushed at Shingen.

[SHINGEN]: “Che… at this time…”

[HIDEYOSHI]: “Ahaha, they sure are following me. It’s convenient reinforcements came.”

The enemy soldier that attacked Shingen collapsed in one strike. The man who cut him down— Nobuharu flung off the blood on his blade and spoke in a loud voice.

[NOBUHARU]: “Shingen! Leave them to me!”

[SHINGEN]: “Gotcha!”

[HIDEYOSHI]: “Guess I should have expected it wouldn’t work. But—“

Hideyoshi slashed at Shingen without notice.

However, this being a second ambush, Shingen safely avoided it.

[SHINGEN]: “… You seem to really like surprises.”

[HIDEYOSHI]: “No matter the enemy, it’s better to defeat them easily, right? Well, looks like it didn’t work on you though.”

Shingen and Hideyoshi swung their swords, trying to take the other’s life, while they made light conversation.

[SHINGEN]: (… Che. Toyotomi Hideyoshi… he’s better than I expected.)

[SHINGEN]: (This guy won’t be simple to deal with— Huh?)

In the moment Shingen and Hideyoshi created distance from each other there was the sound of something cutting through the wind.

[HIDEYOSHI]: “—!?”

[SHINGEN]: (… This sound… an arrow!? Kgh, I won’t make it…)

It was a close call. Nobuharu cut down the arrow that flew towards Shingen.

[SHINGEN]: “Nobuharu-san, you saved me. But to think he’d use even these means.”

[SHINGEN]: (What’s this? He looks pretty cautious about our surroundings—)

[HIDEYOSHI]: “… To even dodge an arrow. You really are lucky.”

[HIDEYOSHI]: “We’ll take our leave here. I need to think of a plan that’ll defeat you next time.”

Hideyoshi called out to Toshiie and the two retreated surprisingly quick.

[MASAKAGE]: “—Shingen-sama, you’re safe!”

[SHINGEN]: “Yeah… Masakage, you don’t look like you’re hurt either.”

[MASAKAGE]: “That was dangerous! They shot an arrow when, if it was done poorly, it might have hit them too… They’re bold.”

[SHINGEN]: “… No, this is…”

[SHINGEN]: (… If my guess is right then this might be a bad situation…)

funny isnt it? in toyotomi route, hideyoshi is having a hard time but here in takeda, shingen is having a hard time.

hideyoshi make it look like he order the arrow to be shot but run away. shingen will find it suspicious.

I think the two were equally having a hard time against each other and neither of them was gaining ground, but you do bring up a nice point in that I think the story DOES tend to lean that way. It puts the general of the route you’re on in a lower position so it’s more dramatic (and they end up needing to use the MC, maybe?).

It’s kind of funny that ALL the generals end up thinking that Mouri might interrupt them… and yet they still go forward with attacking each other. Like ??? although I guess if they didn’t do anything then Mouri wouldn’t do anything either and just continue to wait for them. So, it almost sounds like they sprung the trap in front of them on purpose and now it just relies on them overcoming this / not having underestimated Mouri.

Nobuharu is undefeated right, then his strength is equal to the Mouris and only one to fight equally…..
(ps. I check my spelling this time lol 😂)

I seriously, seriously love how we get to see everyone’s reactions about each other in their POV. Hideyoshi was thinking really hard about tricking Shingen and retreating. But here we can see Shingen was already like “Hmm” and Hideyoshi wasn’t being as subtle as he thought LOL. They’re doing such a good job in balancing all the leaders and really making them equal.

LOL I keep wondering about that too. Nobuharu has his “Immortal Ogre” title, so like… he can’t lose to Mouri, right? |D;; unless this is where he loses his title.
