SNB Mouri ~ 光盟 Chapter 2.5 ~

Chapter 2: The Tip of the Blade

The war began at last with the dawning of the night. The commanders of each army attacked Motonari and the others one after another.

In order to fight fire with fire, Motonari and the others unsheathed their swords…

Chapter 2.5

Even after everyone in the Mouri army leapt onto the battlefield, I hid together with Imari-kun and Motonari-san in the forest.

[MOTONARI]: “… It appears that Takamoto and Terumoto have returned. Now then, I should depart—“

[YUZUKI]: “Huh…”

[MOTONARI]: “I also have something I must do, you see. Have no worries, I will be entrusting you to the two of them, princess.”

[MOTONARI]: “I will return immediately, so wait here.”

Motonari-san smiled gently and, after giving orders to Takamoto-san and Terumoto-san when they came over, he stepped onto the battlefield.

[MOTONARI]: (Found them. Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi—)

Motonari walked slowly towards Nobunaga and the others.

[NOBUNAGA]: “You… Mouri Motonari.”

[MOTONARI]: “Indeed. I am Mouri Motonari, the general of the Mouri army.”

[HIDEYOSHI]: “… Ooh, to think the general himself would appear.”

[MOTONARI]: “It seems like you took care of my children several days ago. You punished them quite hard, didn’t you?”

[NOBUNAGA]: “Is that a complaint from the one who ambushed us?”

[MOTONARI]: “I merely… wish to protect my family is all.”

Even as they exchanged words, Nobunaga and Hideyoshi and the commanders who looked to be both their retainers had already pulled out their weapons.

[MOTONARI]: (… In the end it seems we must cross blades.)

[???]: “Mouri Motonari, prepare yourself!”

[???]: “Oraaaaagh!”

Motonari casually dealt with the two who came attacking. However, in the opportunity that arose from that, Nobunaga and Hideyoshi closed in from the left and right aiming for a small blind spot.

Nobunaga’s gun went for his head and Hideyoshi’s sword went for his heart, each person accurately targeting a part that would be fatal wound.

[NOBUNAGA + HIDEYOSHI]: “You’re mine!”

[MOTONARI]: “This was a little close just now. —Hmph!”

Dodging it within a hairsbreadth, Motonari flung back Nobunaga and Hideyoshi with his sword.

[MOTONARI]: (To think they would be able to cooperate to that extent without exchanging words…)

However, there was no change in Motonari’s superiority. Motonari gave a final notice to Nobunaga and Hideyoshi.

[MOTONARI]: “… Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. If you say you will retreat now I will not pursue you either.”

[MOTONARI]: “However, if you are to continue still… I will fight fire with fire.”

[NOBUNAGA]: “Hmph, do you think I, Nobunaga, will disgrace myself by withdrawing?”

[HIDEYOSHI]: “Unfortunately, you see, I hate losing. I’m not going to listen to your words on retreating because you won’t pursue us.”

[MOTONARI]: “… That is a shame. I warned you.”

[MOTONARI]: (As I thought, it wouldn’t go well. But even if I cut down their generals here then it will only strengthen the aggression of the roused vassals.)

[MOTONARI]: (In that case, perhaps aiming for them would be the best choice…)

[MOTONARI]: “—I’m sorry.”

Motonari reflected the sunlight with his blade and then in the momentary gap born from Nobunaga and the others being robbed of their vision—

[???]: “GUAAAAAGH!!”

[HIDEYOSHI]: “Wha… TOSHIIE!!”

[MOTONARI]: “Next is…”

[???]: “… Ah!”

Motonari, who had thrown a single strike at Toshiie, turned his blade to Ranmaru next.

[???]: “—LIKE I’M GONNA LET YOU!!”

Someone jumped in from the side as if to protect Ranmaru but, even still, Motonari swung his blade without hesitation.

[???]: “Gahugh!!”

[RANMARU]: “Ka… tsuie-sa… KATSUIE-SAN!!”

[MOTONARI]: “… It is sad, but I believe you cannot stand any longer with that injury.”

[MOTONARI]: “If those remaining do not wish to meet the same fate then withdraw at once from the front of Mouri territory.”

[MOTONARI]: (I knew this already, but… whichever way this matter ends, the aftertaste is terrible.)

Amid the screams of those who worried over their comrades, Motonari quietly left the battlefield.

I was actually really excited for this chapter because I really wanted to know what is going through Motonari’s head so it was quite interesting to see the method to his madness.

MOTONARI]: (I knew this already, but… whichever way this matter ends, the aftertaste is terrible.)

The part where he refers to the aftertaste as “terrible” surprised me quite a bit in a way. From what we know he stopped pursuing the capital in order to protect the future of the Mouri Army so considering his bloody past you would expect him to have gotten use to the feeling of blood shed but the fact that he brings up the feeling of a terrible aftertaste shows that it still doesn’t settle well with him despite knowing what will happen. Not to mention his attempts to convince them to retreat before things escalate even further. I’m quite curious to know if the feeling of guilt played a factor in him staying away from as much violence as possible.

Now moving on to Takamoto I truly do see why Motonari chose him as the next commander of the Mouri Army. When he faced off against Saizo he also made attempts in getting him to retreat rather than fighting which is exactly the same thing Motonari is doing within this chapter. Realistically thinking if Motonari wanted the Oni race to survive choosing Takamoto was the best option. As you can see he isn’t very fond of killing either and will most likely not put the Mouri Army in a position where they must go to war unless absolutely necessary. Then we Takakage over here having blast killing all these people. You know I bet you he dyed his hair red with the blood of his enemies. But I mean it’s fine or whatever he’s still hot ;) 😂

I didn’t know what to expect, haha, but these monologues from Motonari are so interesting and, like you said, surprising about his character. I’ve always found him a bit shady because of his perpetual calm and niceness, but this insight into his character shows just how much he values peace. To the point where he gives everyone multiple chances to retreat and even (almost) reluctantly cuts the retainers down, while feeling bad about it.

LOL I still think Motoharu and Takakage would be good commanders, but that’d be if you wanted Mouri to rule the world :’D no doubt with casualties and sacrifices though. But yeah I can totally see his decision for choosing Takamoto too and Motoharu/Takakage might be best left as defenders or advisers that are tempered by a peaceful general.

I’m a bit surprised but I guess it makes sense since we never saw Mouri getting hurt in any of the other chapters (except maybe Takamoto and Terumoto). I wonder what’s going to happen back with Mouri again, especially after seeing what the other armies are going to do.

Oh gosh, im really curious about literally everything. I wonder if someone would actually die tho, well i hope that wouldnt happen. But i wonder if himemiko would appear, and wether or not an army would actually reach unification. Cant wait for the next chapters of the story. Thankyou so much for the update.

I’m still hoping there’ll be deaths or permanent consequences for those outside of the route you’re currently on, ex. if you’re in Oda route then Uesugi, Takeda, and Sanada are definitely going to get the short end of the stick. Even Toyotomi and Date are at risk for bad things happening to them despite being allied with Oda, haha.

You’re welcome! The story is at a really interesting spot right now since everyone’s converged into a shared plot :’)).
