Chapter 3: The Withered Tree Flowers
An abrupt appearance of a commander of the Mouri army. Because of that one man, Kikkawa Motoharu, Kagekatsu sustained a grievous wound. The wound was deep and even with the power of her blood it couldn’t be healed. She wished strongly to save Kagekatsu and in that moment…
Kagekatsu was cut down— such unbelievable information flew in and my mind went blank.
[YUZUKI]: (There must be some sort of mistake…!)
However, a limp Kagekatsu-kun carried into the main camp, without showing any signs of opening his eyes, made that wish in vain.
[KENSHIN]: “Kageie, please treat him.”
Just as Kageie-san started the medical treatment right away Kagemochi-san ran over with ragged breathing.
[KAGEMOCHI]: “Kenshin-sama! Kagekatsu-sama is… ah!”
Kagemochi-san’s expressioned clouded over upon seeing Kagekatsu-kun’s unconscious state.
[KAGEMOCHI]: “… According to the messenger from the Takeda army, Yamagata Masakage and Kirigakure Saizou also sustained heavy wounds. Both of them appeared to have been struck by the Mouri army—“
[KENSHIN]: “I see…”
Kageie-san wrapped bandages around Kagekatsu-kun to seal his wounds.
But there was no sign of the bleeding stopping at all. The bandages turned red as we watched.
Seeing that sight Kanetsugu-san, who had been silent up to now, spoke with a trembling voice.
[KANETSUGU]: “If I hadn’t left Kagekatsu’s side…!”
[KENSHIN]: “Do not blame yourself. This is war. It is possible for anyone to be injured.”
[KENSHIN]: “What befell Kagekatsu— was simply just that.”
Kenshin-san layered on his words calmly, but his face remained grim.
[YUZUKI]: (There’s no way Kanetsugu-san… and, moreover, Kenshin-san are accepting this situation.)
My heart clenched when I thought about their feelings.
I could only think of one way to save Kagekatsu-kun.
[YUZUKI]: “Kenshin-san… please let me give Kagekatsu-kun my blood!”
[KENSHIN]: “Your blood…”
[YUZUKI]: “I’ve always been thinking about what I could do to be of use to everyone.”
[YUZUKI]: “And I think this is one of those times. My blood… my power, please use it!”
[KENSHIN]: “… I understand your feelings.”
[KENSHIN]: “Then, again, as the general… and as Kagekatsu’s father, I would request this of you.”
[KENSHIN]: “Would you grant your blood to Kagekatsu?”
I cut the tip of my finger with a blade and hurriedly carried the blood to Kagekatsu-kun’s mouth.
[YUZUKI]: “Kagekatsu-kun… drink…”
The blood fell into Kagekatsu-kun’s mouth drop by drop.
However, contrary to expectations, Kagekatsu-kun’s injuries did not get better.
[YUZUKI]: (Why aren’t the wounds sealing…!?)
[YUZUKI]: (If I give more blood—)
[KENSHIN]: “!! Wait, what do you intend to do?”
[YUZUKI]: “I’m sure Kagekatsu-kun isn’t recovering because there’s not enough blood. So…!”
Kenshin-san grabbed my arm when I tried to cut myself even more.
I startled and raised my head at the strength in that hand only to meet sad eyes.
[KENSHIN]: “Enough. Even if you do such a thing, it will only harm you. It would not… save Kagekatsu.”
[YUZUKI]: (We can only give up then? I don’t want to do that. I want to save Kagekatsu-kun…!)
When I squeezed my eyes shut tightly, I felt something shining on the other side of my eyelids.
[KENSHIN]: “This is…”
I opened my eyes to see a strong light, that had never been seen up to now, being released from the magatama that was a sacred treasure.
[KANETSUGU]: “Kenshin-sama, over there is—“
[KENSHIN]: “Yes… Mouri lands.”
Staring at the light’s direction, I wondered what was at the place it pointed at. Hope and uneasiness mixed together and I unconsciously held my breath.
[YUZUKI]: (Is it possible that over there is a clue to save Kagekatsu-kun…?)
T/N: Fancy idiom for the Uesugi chapter title again. Essentially, it means that even in the middle of a terrible disaster, you manage to find some way to overcome it or you end up benefiting from it somehow. It’s a bit like “every cloud has a silver lining” but instead of believing that better days will come, it’s more like a good thing DOES happen.
