Event: The Targeted Post Town! A Fated Cooperative Battle

Following sightings of a yakuma subspecies, the Uesugi army stayed at a post town. At that time, the post town was attacked by a large horde of yakuma. Just as they were struggling with the large numbers, somehow the Takeda army entered to reinforce them…

Chapter 3: Driven Into a Corner

[UESUGI SOLDIER]: “Gugh, what’s with this yakuma!?”

[UESUGI SOLDIER]: “W-what a sinister form. It’s also twice as large as the others…”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “Kenshin-sama, let us go and deal with that yakuma subspecies.”

[KENSHIN]: “… The army formation has collapsed with that thing in the center. It appears difficult to deal with by our soldiers.”

[KENSHIN]: “—We will change this battlefield!”

[KAGEIE + KAGEMOCHI + KAGEKATSU]: “My lord, as you command.”

The three turned sharp gazes at the yakuma subspecies, as if locking onto prey.

[KENSHIN]: “For now, disregard the other yakuma. First, we will attack the yakuma in the center. Then, we shall purge the rest from the town.”

[KENSHIN]: “How strong exactly this yakuma subspecies is… I would like to see.”

[YAKUMA SUBSPECIES]: “GRRRRGH…”

[KAGEIE]: “Haah!”

[KAGEKATSU]: “… Hah!”

Surrounding the conspicuously large and violent yakuma, the four men attacked all at once. However—

[KAGEIE]: “—Kgh!”

[KAGEIE]: “What in the world is going on!? No matter how much we slash, it won’t go down…!”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “I give. I though its physical strength would gradually be eroded, but—“

At that moment, the rampaging yakuma subspecies suddenly stopped moving.

[KAGEKATSU]: “… Why? We didn’t get it, right?”

The yakuma subspecies suddenly grabbed the yakuma close to it and pressed them into its own body.

When it did, the pushed in yakuma were absorbed into the yakuma subspecies in a flash.

[KAGEIE]: “Ggh… what the heck’s that. How disgusting. Is that what Takeda said about the absorbing yakuma thing?”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “Yes, it seems so. Meaning it’s grown stronger again… or something to that extent.”

[KENSHIN]: “So, a yakuma subspecies is like this.”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “… How troublesome. At this rate, the harm is only going to expand.”

[KAGEKATSU]: “… If we ask for reinforcement, we might be able to solve this.”

[KAGEIE]: “Wha, Kagekatsu-sama…! Do you possibly mean asking Takeda?”

[KAGEKATSU]: “E-erm, um…”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “Hm, that may be a valid measure. For now, we must endure our embarrassment and prioritize the safety of the people—“

[KENSHIN]: “No, do not call for aid.”

Everyone fell silent at that dignified voice.

[KENSHIN]: “… Strictly speaking, I mean that we will not call for them at the present.”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “In other words…?”

[KENSHIN]: “We cannot summon them seeing that we do not understand how the yakuma will move. A yakuma subspecies may have appeared over where Shingen is as well.”

[KENSHIN]: “During this, it would be dangerous to move carelessly.”

[KAGEMOCHI]: “… I see. A judgment with the larger picture in mind?”

[KENSHIN]: “… That is the case. Everyone, please endure a while longer until Kanetsugu returns to report.”

Meanwhile, the Takeda army was informed about the serious situation on the western side by the townspeople.

[MASAKAGE]: “What? It’s turned into a problem for those Uesugi guys?”

[NOBUHARU]: “Hrm. For such a situation to happen with that war god there. Could it be that the yakuma subspecies appeared?”

[SHINGEN]: “… Yeah, it’s more than enough to think that.”

[MASAKAGE]: “Jeez, they’re hopeless. I guess I’ll go over and support them.”

[MASATOYO]: “That’s right. There’s no meaning to protecting only one entrance. I’ll also—“

[SHINGEN]: “No, you guys can’t.”

[MASAKAGE + MASATOYO]: “Shingen-sama…?”

[SHINGEN]: “I said this before but this is Uesugi’s territory. Meaning, it’s best we listen to Uesugi’s decisions.”

[SHINGEN]: “… If they need it then I’m sure they’ll ask for reinforcements.”

[SHINGEN]: “But the fact that they haven’t yet means there must be some kind of reason.”

[NOBUHARU]: “……”

[NOBUHARU]: “Alright, let’s believe in Shingen! Your guesses are never wrong, so there’s no concern.”

[SHINGEN]: “Nobuharu-san, thanks…”

[SHINGEN]: “… Kenshin, the one who’ll defeat you is me. So, please, don’t disappoint me.”

The Uesugi army continued to fight with the yakuma still.

[KENSHIN]: “— Everyone, after another push, we can drive it back! Do not falter and follow me!”

[KAGEIE]: “Follow after Kenshin-sama!”

Somehow the morale of the soldiers was maintained by Kenshin and the others’ encouragements. However, it was a situation where it wouldn’t be strange for a total collapse to happen soon.

[KAGEKATSU]: “—Gugh!?”

[KAGEKATSU]: “Ev… everyone, we can’t get pushed back here. If we’re defeated then the villagers… won’t be protected!”

[UESUGI SOLDIER]: “S-still, any more of this and… UWAH?!”

Beginning from the scream of one soliders, the army formation started to collapse greatly. In other words, it was the destruction of the line of defence.

[KAGEKATSU]: “N-no way… the yakuma will get into this town like this…”

[???]: “Jeez, Kagekatsu. I’ve told you to be confident even in situations like these.”

[KAGEKATSU]: “… This voice…!”

[KANETSUGU]: “You’re Kenshin-sama’s heir… ah, well, I guess now isn’t the time.”

[KANETSUGU]: “Anyway, sorry, I’ve made you all wait.”

[KAGEKATSU]: “Kanetsugu…!”

[UESUGI SOLDIER]: “H-has Kanetsugu-sama returned…!?”

[KANETSUGU]: “Hey! Scouting squad, let’s go!”

At Kanetsugu’s signal, a soldier beside him turned to the soldiers waiting outside the village and blew a whistle.

[KANETSUGU]: “Chase after the backs of those yakuma and disperse them!”

The soldiers who heard the sound of the whistle raised their voices into a cry. In the next moment, the scream-like howls of the yakuma resounded.

[KANETSUGU]: “… Hah!”

[KANETSUGU]: “Alright, next!”

[UESUGI SOLDIER]: “It r-really is Kanetsugu-sama…! Everyone, we’re saved!”

The exhausted soldiers cheered at seeing Kanetsugu and his intense force, leading a squad.

[???]: “Erm, I’m also here though.”

[MASANOBU]: “Well, I shouldn’t expect to be praised by the enemy army—“

[UESUGI SOLDIER]: “Oh, the Takeda army’s Kousaka Masanobu is also here! This is reassuring!”

[MASANOBU]: “… Ahaha. To actually be praised gives me somewhat mixed feelings. I suppose that shows how much you were all struggling here.”

[KANETSUGU]: “—Kenshin-sama! I, Naoe Kanetsugu, have returned.”

[KENSHIN]: “Kanetsugu, you’ve done well to return.”

[KAGEKATSU]: “… I’m glad you’re safe. I was… really worried.”

[KANETSUGU]: “Hey, hey, Kanetsugu. I wouldn’t kick the bucket that easily.”

[KANETSUGU]: “Well, though it took some time, I didn’t get a single wound.”

[KENSHIN]: “—Kanetsugu, I apologize for interrupting but I’d like to ask for a report now. We do not have the leeway.”

[KANETSUGU]: “… Right, understood. This is my report.”

[KANETSUGU]: “There are dozens of normal yakuma within the surroundings of the post town I scouted with Masanobu…”

[KANETSUGU]: “However, there is only this yakuma subspecies here.”

[KANETSUGU]: “I believe it is likely that this yakuma subspecies won’t appear any more than this.”

Kenshin, who listened to Kanetsugu’s report in silence, eventually let out a short breath and opened his mouth.

[KENSHIN]: “… I have the necessary information for the next move then.”

[KANETSUGU]: “Necessary information?”

[KENSHIN]: “Yes. In other words, I can finally request support from Takeda with this.”

[KENSHIN]: “—Arrange for a messenger immediately.”

[MASANOBU]: “Ah, if that’s the case, I’ll go and convey this. Either way, I’m returning right now so it’ll be incidental.”

The moment Masanobu, who had been standing there at some point in time, took on the role of messenger he left the area without listening to Kenshin’s reply.

[KENSHIN]: “It’s come to the point of knowing what it is we are supposed to do, hm.”

[KANETSUGU]: “…? What do you mean?”

[KENSHIN]: “That victory or defeat will change depending on whether we can coordinate with Takeda.”

[KENSHIN]: “—Until aid arrives, it is necessary to continue repressing the yakuma subspecies. I am relying on you, Kanetsugu.”

[KANETSUGU]: “Yes, of course. Please leave this to me!”

Masanobu, who finished joining up with Shingen and the others without a problem, conveyed the message from Kenshin.

[MASANOBU]: “—That’s their situation and so, after we deal with the yakuma here, we should join them as reinforcements.”

[SHINGEN]: “I see. Like I thought, the yakuma subspecies appeared there…”

[SHINGEN]: “But, as long as we defeat that one, it looks like this battle will end, huh.”

[SHINGEN]: “—You all heard that, right? Let’s end this quickly!”

[MASATOYO + MASAKAGE]: “Understood!”

[SHINGEN]: “Huh? There’s one missing reply.”

[MASATOYO]: “Ah, if you’re talking about Nobuharu-san, he ran into the yakuma in the middle of Masanobu’s report. See, he’s over there.”

When Shingen looked over there, Nobuharu was laughing while mowing down the yakuma.

[NOBUHARU]: “Fuhahaha! My blood is boiling!”

[NOBUHARU]: “A demon that troubles the war god, Uesugi Kenshin, huh. I want to hurry and fight it!”

[SHINGEN]: “… Oh boy, that’s just like Nobuharu-san.”

Shingen pulled out his sword while smiling wryly and pointed his blade towards the yakuma.

[SHINGEN]: “Alright, we’re going to follow Nobuharu-san too!”

Everyone in Takeda hurried over to where the Uesugi army was in the west as soon as they annihilated their yakuma.

[SHINGEN]: “Kgh, it took some time to clean up all the yakuma.”

[MASATOYO]: “I wonder if Uesugi is alright…”

[SHINGEN]: “… Kenshin is there. I’m certain they should be able to hold.”

[MASANOBU]: “Ah— Shingen-sama, did you hear that? That is the yakuma subspecies the Uesugi men are fighting.”

[SHINGEN]: “Ah, I heard it! Jeez, this isn’t the time to talk, huh… Let’s hurry!”

YEAH I loved how you could feel the respect between Shingen and Kenshin in this one even though they’re also determined to straight up kill each other (or well win against each other).
